In what could be the first report of an attack by Islamic State militants on French special forces using a drone, the device was intercepted while flying and exploded after landing on the ground, the paper said. Le Monde said the attack happened on Oct. 2. |
Turkey has right to combat threats in Syria and Iraq: Erdogan Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:43 PM PDT By Tulay Karadeniz and Tuvan Gumrukcu ANKARA (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan warned Iraq's prime minister he should "know his limits" after he criticized Turkey's military presence there and said the Turkish army, shaken by a failed coup bid, had not lost so much standing as to take orders from him. NATO member Turkey shares a 1,200 km (750-mile) border with Syria and Iraq and faces threats from Islamic State militants in both. The Turkish army, its senior ranks purged following a failed military attempt to overthrow Erdogan in July, launched an incursion into Syria in August to push back Islamic State and prevent U.S.-backed Kurdish militia fighters from seizing territory. |
US tries to defuse Iraq-Turkey war of words over Mosul Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:30 PM PDT As Turkey and Iraq traded insults over the Turkish troop presence outside Mosul on Tuesday, the United States urged its allies to resolve the spat before a major offensive on the city. Iraq is preparing to fight to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State group with support from the United States and a broad -- though sometimes fractious -- coalition of international partners. Abadi has repeatedly urged Turkey to withdraw troops deployed near the northern city in an area nominally part of Iraq but controlled by forces loyal to the country's autonomous Kurdish region. |
Germany Wants to Ban Fossil-Fuel-Powered Cars Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:25 PM PDT Germany, home of global automotive giants Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, is on the road to banning gas and diesel engines from its highways and byways. The Bundesrat, the upper house of Germany's parliament, passed a resolution on Monday that calls for the elimination of vehicles powered by gasoline and diesel engines by 2030. The resolution is nonbinding and needs the approval of the European Union, as it would also apply to vehicles from other EU nations. |
As offensive nears, Islamic State rigs Mosul with bombs Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:08 PM PDT By Michael Georgy, Babak Dehghanpisheh and Ahmed Rasheed ERBIL/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic State militants have placed booby traps across the city of Mosul, dug tunnels and recruited children as spies in anticipation of an offensive to dislodge the jihadists from their Iraqi stronghold, Iraqis and U.S. officials said. Mosul, home to up to 1.5 million people, has been the headquarters of Islamic State's self-declared caliphate in northern Iraq since 2014 and the militants are making complex preparations to prevent Iraqi security forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, taking it back. The battle for the city, expected later this month, will help shape the future of Iraq and the legacy of U.S. President Barack Obama. |
Soccer-Saudis, Iran go top after Australia held by Japan Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:01 PM PDT * Saudis storm to top with three goals * Iran beat South Korea in Group A clash * Jedinak penalty gives Australia draw with Japan * Qatar pick up first win, China lose again (Adds later matches) Oct 11 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia took full advantage of an earlier draw between Australia and Japan by beating neighbours United Arab Emirates 3-0 to storm to the top of Group B in Asian World Cup qualifying on Tuesday. Iran earlier delighted 75,000 fans at a jam-packed Azadi stadium in Tehran when Sardar Azmoun's goal earned a 1-0 win over South Korea that sent Team Melli clear in Group A after four of 10 matches. |
IS propaganda arm weakened by military setbacks: study Posted: 11 Oct 2016 02:01 PM PDT The IS group's propaganda machine, largely credited with effectively attracting fresh recruits, has been weakened by military setbacks in Iraq and Syria, a US study said Tuesday. The jihadist group's photo and video dissemination has been cut drastically year over year, research by the West Point military academy's Combating Terrorism Center revealed. |
China, South Korea suffer World Cup blows Posted: 11 Oct 2016 01:46 PM PDT China's bid to qualify for the 2018 World Cup suffered a crushing blow on Tuesday while Iran sprang a shock to establish themselves as the frontrunners in Group A at the expense of South Korea. The Chinese were outclassed 2-0 by Uzbekistan in Tashkent with the Central Asians scoring twice in the second half through Marat Bikmaev and Otabek Shukurov to leave China bottom of the pile on just one point and almost certainly facing more World Cup heartbreak. |
U.S. says foreign forces in Iraq should be there with Baghdad's approval Posted: 11 Oct 2016 01:36 PM PDT Foreign military forces in Iraq should be there with the approval of the Baghdad government and under the umbrella of the anti-Islamic State coalition, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday. Turkey and Iraq disagree over the presence of about 2,000 Turkish troops at a base in northern Iraq, as the coalition prepares for an attack on the Islamic State-held city of Mosul. "It is imperative for all parties to coordinate closely over the coming days and weeks to ensure unity of effort in defeating Daesh and to provide for the lasting security of the Iraqi people," the State Department said in a statement, referring to Islamic State by its Arabic name. |
Airstrike in Yemen deepens war, puts pressure on US Posted: 11 Oct 2016 01:32 PM PDT SANAA, Yemen (AP) — More than 1,000 mourners were packed into the funeral hall, including some of the most powerful figures in Yemen's rebel movement. Ali al-Akwa, who was just about to start reciting the Quran, heard warplanes overhead — but that wasn't strange for wartime Sanaa. Surely a funeral would be safe, he thought. |

Bosnia is 'a failed concept': Serb leader Posted: 11 Oct 2016 12:18 PM PDT Bosnia is "a failed concept," Serb leader in the Balkans country Milorad Dodik said Tuesday, adding that he "thinks a lot" about a referendum on independence for his Republika Srpska. "I do not want to pretend to support a failed concept called Bosnia and Herzegovina," Dodik told AFP in an interview at his presidency in the northern town of Banja Luka. Dodik added that unless a consensus can be found between Bosnia's communities -- Muslims, Serbs and Croats -- the country will disappear. |
Iraq PM hits back in war of words with Turkey's president Posted: 11 Oct 2016 12:04 PM PDT Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi hit back on Tuesday against dismissive comments by Turkey's president, mocking his appeal to the nation via video call during a failed coup attempt. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Abadi earlier in the day to "know your place," and said that he is "not on my level" -- another escalation in the war of words between the two sides over Ankara's deployment of troops in Iraq's north. Erdogan made a desperate appeal via video calling application FaceTime for citizens to resist a July attempt to overthrow the government, rallying resistance that helped to thwart the coup. |

The story (www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/mideast-crisis-kurds-land/) detailed the case of a Kurd who said he had occupied a house formerly owned by an Arab family in the town of Zumar, after Kurdish Peshmerga fighters dislodged Islamic State militants from the region. The government repeated its past statements that it did not have a policy of pushing Arabs out of areas that Kurdish forces have retaken from Islamic State. |
After failed coup, what sort of Turkey does Erdogan want? Posted: 11 Oct 2016 08:00 AM PDT Patriotism in Turkey has always been strong, but in the wake of July's failed coup by members of the military, President Tayyip Erdogan has tapped freely into the populist, banner-draped fervor to remould the nation in his image. The questions are, what sort of Turkey does Erdogan want, and what steps will this powerful and sometimes unpredictable leader take to achieve his vision? At one level, diplomats and analysts say, Erdogan has made his aims perfectly clear. |
Ex-PM Maliki making comeback as Iraq's most powerful man Posted: 11 Oct 2016 07:55 AM PDT By Ahmed Rasheed and Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nuri al-Maliki is once again positioning himself as Iraq's most powerful man, poised to return as kingmaker in a fight for influence that could decide Iraq's fate as a unified country after the coming battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State. Two years after he was pressured to leave office by both the United States and Iran for failing to stop Islamic State fighters from sweeping across the country, the former prime minister still leads a powerful Shi'ite parliamentary bloc. Maliki's office denies that he has any plans to return to the premiership, and his allies say he is more likely to try to name an ally as the next prime minister rather than take back the role for himself. |

Clinton v Trump Debate Part Two – Enough Is Enough! Posted: 11 Oct 2016 07:00 AM PDT Like most of those polled immediately after the event, I think Hillary Clinton clearly won, and overall I thought she handled the Town format well. At a time when appearances count, her trim white collar and blouse – stylish enough not to be considered prim – was the perfect rebuttal to the recently unmasked sexual predator. And she actually answered many of the questions, often with thought and preparation. As for that other elephant in the room – the fallout from the revolting tape where he boasts of grabbing women in the crotch and kissing them without warning (because "when you're a star … you can do anything") — the pre-debate punditocracy had self-righteously decreed that Trump would have to apologize, really apologize, and appear contrite to get beyond the ugliness. |

President Vladimir Putin told an energy congress on Monday that Russia was ready to join a proposed OPEC cap but did not provide the details. |
Father of U.S. war hero attacks Trump's comment at debate Posted: 11 Oct 2016 05:43 AM PDT Khizr Khan, the father of a decorated American soldier killed in Iraq, lashed out at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday for saying his son would still be alive if Trump had been president at the time. "For this candidate to put his political expediency ahead of any realization of pain and suffering of the families is shameful," Khan said in an interview with CNN. The New York businessman raised the name of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan in a Sunday night presidential debate while criticizing Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for voting in favor of the 2003 invasion of Iraq when she was a U.S. senator. |

Iraqi forces deploy to guard huge Shiite pilgrimage Posted: 11 Oct 2016 04:07 AM PDT Thousands of Iraqi security personnel guarded areas in and around Karbala on Tuesday to protect hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims flocking to the shrine city for annual mourning rituals. Shiites in Iraq have come under frequent attack by Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group who regard them as heretics and who still control some territory in Anbar province, to the west of Karbala, though attacks in the city itself are rare. Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, is buried in Karbala, and Shiite pilgrims pack the city each year for Ashura commemorations, which mark his death in the 7th century. |
IEA says oil market may rebalance faster if OPEC sticks to target Posted: 11 Oct 2016 01:38 AM PDT Global oil supply could fall in line with demand more quickly if OPEC and Russia agree to a steep enough cut in production, but it is unclear how rapidly this might happen, the International Energy Agency said on Tuesday. OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, agreed last month to cut production to around 32.5 to 33 million barrels per day (bpd) and Russia has signaled it is ready to join in any effort to temper supply and shrink a stubborn global surplus of unwanted crude. Oversupply helped send oil prices from $115 a barrel in June 2014 to as low as $27 in January this year. |

Goldman sees lower chance of oil market rebalancing in 2017 Posted: 10 Oct 2016 08:32 PM PDT (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs said a planned oil output cut by producer cartel OPEC and other exporters like Russia has become a "greater possibility", but warned that any reduction likely won't be deep enough to re-balance markets in 2017. "Higher production from Libya, Nigeria and Iraq are reducing the odds of such a deal rebalancing the oil market in 2017," Goldman analysts said in a note to clients dated Oct. 10. Any failure to reach such a deal, however, would push prices sharply lower to $43 per barrel as the global oil market will still have surplus crude in the fourth quarter. |
Afghan refugee saga vies for top prize at Busan festival Posted: 10 Oct 2016 08:18 PM PDT A gripping drama depicting the harrowing plight of Afghan refugees is targeting Oscars history as it vies for the top prize at Asia's premier film festival this week. Director Navid Mahmoudi was told shortly before making the trip to the 21st Busan International Film Festival in South Korea that his debut film "Parting" was being put forward as Afghanistan's hope for best foreign language film at next year's Oscars. The are certainly doing that at BIFF, where the film has played to full houses as it vies for the main New Currents award for first- and second-time Asian filmmakers. |
