Saudi Arabia says Khashoggi murder premeditated: state media Posted: 25 Oct 2018 05:21 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's public prosecutor said on Thursday the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was premeditated, citing a joint Saudi-Turkish investigation, state media reported. Saudi officials had earlier said an internal investigation suggested Khashoggi was killed in a botched operation to "negotiate" his return to the kingdom. Initially, Riyadh denied having anything to do with Khashoggi's disappearance after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. |

Hyundai Q3 profit plummets on slowing sales, currency swings Posted: 25 Oct 2018 12:16 AM PDT Hyundai Motor reported a 67 percent plunge in third-quarter net profit from the previous year after overseas sales slowed and currency swings hurt its bottom line in emerging markets. Net profit for July to September was 306 billion won ($268.8 million), while operating profit plummeted 76 percent year-on-year to 288.9 billion won, the firm said in a statement. "The third quarter was a difficult time due to slowing demand in major markets including the US and concerns over a global trade dispute," said Hyundai, which together with its subsidiary Kia is the world's fifth-largest automaker. |

Oil Traders Who Expect Iran Waivers Are in for a Shock: Hedgeye Posted: 25 Oct 2018 09:10 PM PDT Traders who expect the U.S. to hand out waivers allowing certain nations to continue buying oil from the Islamic Republic, "are making a huge miscalculation," Joe McMonigle, head of energy policy at Hedgeye, said in a note. "We see more than a 50 percent chance of an early enforcement of Iran sanctions to send a message and incentivize others to get Iran imports to zero," McMonigle said. The international benchmark could even hit $90 a barrel for the first time since 2014, before settling back to around $85, McMonigle said. |
Israeli forces kill four Palestinians in Gaza border protest: medics Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:41 PM PDT The Israeli military responded with air strikes at three positions belonging to Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, an army statement said. It said 16,000 Palestinians had gathered along the Gaza border and hurled grenades, firebombs and rocks at Israeli troops, who responded with "riot dispersal means" and live fire when required. Later, sirens sounded in Israeli towns and communities around the Gaza Strip to warn that militants had launched rockets. |
Microsoft to keep Pentagon bid amid ethics concerns Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:04 PM PDT Microsoft said Friday it is prepared to provide its technology to the US military, including for a massive cloud computing project, despite ethics concerns among some of its employees and others in Silicon Valley. "All of us who live in this country depend on its strong defense," Microsoft president Brad Smith said in a blog post. The statement came two weeks after Google dropped out of the bidding for the huge Pentagon cloud computing contract that could be worth up to $10 billion. |

Republicans push ahead with conservative Trump judicial nominees Posted: 25 Oct 2018 04:23 AM PDT Democrats, who mounted an unsuccessful effort to block Senate confirmation this month of Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, have slammed the president's fellow Republicans for holding the hearings. Only two senators on the 21-member Judiciary Committee, both Republicans, showed up for the hearing in Washington on Wednesday in which four judicial nominees were considered. Democratic Senator Patty Murray, who had asked Republicans to postpone the hearing while the Senate is in recess ahead of the Nov. 6 congressional elections, criticized "the shameful partisan path they have taken on what has always been a bipartisan process." She accused the Republicans of a "mad dash" to secure confirmation. |

Saudi prosecutor to visit Istanbul over Khashoggi murder Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:43 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's chief prosecutor will visit Istanbul to speak with Turkish authorities as part of the investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkey's president said Friday, adding that Ankara still has more evidence in the case. The announcement by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came a day after the Saudi prosecutor said that, based on evidence supplied by Turkey, the murder appeared to have been premeditated -- the first time Saudi authorities have made such an admission. The killing has tainted the image of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who positioned himself as a Saudi reformer, and tested ties between Washington and Riyadh as Western powers demand answers over Khashoggi's death. |

In Praise of Divided Government Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT Right now, the broad consensus among nonpartisan experts is that in this year's midterm elections, Republicans will hold control of the Senate while the Democrats will win back control of the House of Representatives. If this turns out to be true, we will once again return to divided government. In the past 38 years, one side or the other has had total control of the government for only ten years. |

NATO urges Trump officials not to quit nuclear treaty: diplomats Posted: 25 Oct 2018 10:12 AM PDT In a closed-door meeting at NATO, Pentagon, U.S. State Department and National Security Council officials briefed alliance envoys on U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which rid Europe of land-based nuclear missiles. Diplomats present said Germany and other European allies called for a final effort on Washington's part to convince the Kremlin to stop what the West says are violations, or possibly renegotiate it to include China. "Allies want to see a last-ditch effort to avoid a U.S. withdrawal," one NATO diplomat said on condition of anonymity because of the classified nature of the meeting, which took place two days after senior U.S. official John Bolton informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of the plans in Moscow. |
