Recaptured by ISIS, ancient Palmyra loses two more monuments to antiquities destruction Posted: 20 Jan 2017 04:51 PM PST After re-capturing the Syrian city in December, militants from the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have destroyed the Tetrapylon, one of Palmyra's most famous ancient monuments, and part of its Roman theater, local authorities confirmed Friday, threatening millennia-old roots of the Middle East's history. Recommended: How well do you understand the conflict in Syria? Mr. Abdulkarim indicated that he had learned of the damage 10 days earlier, but waited to release the details until he received proof in satellite images. |

US hits ‘core Al Qaeda’ camp with air strike Posted: 20 Jan 2017 01:06 PM PST A US airstrike in Syria is said to have killed more than 100 Al Qaeda militants on Thursday in what may have been the final counterterrorism campaign of Barack Obama's presidency. One B-52 bomber and an undisclosed number of aerial drones struck an Al Qaeda training camp situated in the Idlib province, west of Aleppo, an unnamed US defense official told Reuters on Friday. The Pentagon is confident that no civilians were killed in the attack. |
IS wreaks new destruction in Syria's ancient Palmyra Posted: 20 Jan 2017 11:32 AM PST The Islamic State group has demolished more treasured monuments in Syria's ancient Palmyra, a month after recapturing it from government forces, the country's antiquities chief said Friday. The news is a fresh blow for the UNESCO World Heritage site, which had already been ravaged by the jihadist group during the nine months of control before being expelled in March last year. "Local sources told us that 10 days ago Daesh destroyed the tetrapylon," a 16-columned structure that marked one end of the ancient city's colonnade, Maamoun Abdulkarim told AFP using an Arabic acronym for IS. |
GE looks for sharp cut in corporate tax rate under Trump Posted: 20 Jan 2017 11:05 AM PST "From a GE perspective, at a minimum, we need to have a corporate tax system where the rate of taxation is commensurate with the OECD average of 21 or 22 percent," down from 35 percent, GE Chief Financial Officer Jeff Bornstein told Reuters, referring to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The comments came as GE, a maker of power plants, aircraft engines, locomotives and medical equipment, posted a 36 percent profit jump but said industrial division sales fell in the final quarter of 2016, sending its shares down. |
Death toll now 90 in Nigeria air strike, could reach 170 Posted: 20 Jan 2017 08:40 AM PST The death toll from a botched Nigerian air strike against Boko Haram that hit a camp for displaced people has risen to 90, and could climb as high as 170, Doctors Without Borders said on Friday. Meanwhile, security sources said Boko Haram fighters launched an attack on the town in the far north of Borno state on Thursday evening that left at least 14 Islamist fighters dead. Nigeria's air force said it has set up a board of inquiry which will report its findings before February 2, but military commanders have already called the bombing a mistake. |
Losing in Iraq, Islamic State seeks to shore up Syria presence Posted: 20 Jan 2017 07:59 AM PST By Tom Perry and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - Islamic State is fighting hard to reinforce its presence in Syria as it loses ground in Iraq, deploying fighters to seize full control of a government-held city in the east while at the same time battling enemies on three other fronts. It underlines the residual strength of Islamic State even after its loss of a cluster of cities in Iraq and half of Mosul, and points up the challenges facing U.S. President Donald Trump in the war he has vowed to wage against the group. The jihadists have opened their most ferocious assault yet to capture the last Syrian government-controlled area in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, a pocket of Deir al-Zor city that is surrounded by Islamic State territory. |
Denmark says deploying special forces to Syria against Islamic State Posted: 20 Jan 2017 05:28 AM PST Denmark will deploy up to 60 special forces to fight Islamic State in Syria, the Danish government said on Friday. NATO member Denmark is part of the U.S.-led operation "Inherent Resolve" against Islamic State and already has ground troops operating in Iraq. "Based on a concrete approach from the coalition, the government has decided to expand the tasks of our special forces in Iraq and Syria," said foreign minister Anders Samuelsen. |
Turkey can no longer insist on Syria settlement without Assad: Turkish deputy PM Posted: 20 Jan 2017 04:30 AM PST Turkey can no longer insist on a resolution of the conflict in Syria without the involvement of President Bashar al-Assad, as the situation on the ground has changed dramatically, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said on Friday. Turkey has long insisted that Assad must go for sustainable peace to be achieved in Syria. |
U.S. strikes in Libya kill more than 80 Islamic State fighters Posted: 20 Jan 2017 02:09 AM PST By Idrees Ali and Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 80 Islamic State militants, some of whom were believed to be plotting attacks in Europe, died in U.S. air strikes on camps outside the group's former North African stronghold of Sirte in Libya, the United States said on Thursday. "These strikes were directed against some of ISIL's external plotters," U.S Defense Secretary Ash Carter told a Pentagon briefing, using an acronym for Islamic State, the Syria- and Iraq-based militant group. |

From Nobel Peace Prize to Syria: Obama the realist Posted: 19 Jan 2017 07:57 PM PST Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize may have confounded critics and created enormous expectations, but ultimately it had little influence on his refusal to get drawn into the bloodshed in Syria. In accepting the prize on December 10, 2009, the young US president, elected only a year earlier, gave a steely speech about "war and peace," outlining what would become the pillars of his foreign policy. "War is sometimes necessary," the commander-in-chief, then fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, told the gathering in Oslo. |
Up to 117 civilians died in strikes during Obama presidency Posted: 19 Jan 2017 07:42 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — As many as 117 civilians have been killed in drone and other counterterror attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere during President Barack Obama's presidency, according to a report released late Thursday by U.S. intelligence officials. |
The Atlantic Daily: Inauguration Eve Posted: 19 Jan 2017 04:16 PM PST What We're Following Inauguration Day: It's finally upon us. Around noon tomorrow, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. It's a day that comes too soon for some, including the Trump transition team—with none of his key appointees yet confirmed by the Senate, Trump is keeping more than 50 members of the Obama administration at their posts temporarily. Meanwhile, some Democratic members of Congress have announced they'll boycott the inauguration. Their goal is to show resistance to what they see as Trump's attack on democratic institutions, but they could do their own damage to the system by disrupting America's peaceful transfer of power. The disruption may only be symbolic, but Inauguration Day is all about symbolism. Here's a guide to all the rituals and festivities. |
