Heartbreak in Northern and Southern California areas ravaged by wildfires Posted: 13 Nov 2018 08:47 AM PST NSearch teams were set to sift through the charred wreckage of Paradise, Calif., on Tuesday in search of human remains as authorities investigated the cause of state's deadliest wildfire. The Camp Fire blaze, still raging in northern California, has killed at least 42 people and left 228 others missing. Two others died in the separate Woolsey Fire, which has destroyed 435 structures and displaced about 200,000 people in the mountains and foothills near Southern California's Malibu coast, west of Los Angeles. Despite restrictions, digital spending hits record in US midterms Posted: 13 Nov 2018 05:59 AM PST Even as online platforms tightened rules for political ads, digital spending set new records in the 2018 US midterm elections and appears poised for further growth in 2020. Digital media campaign spending rose 2,400 percent from the 2014 midterms to $1.8 billion, roughly 20 percent of the total $8.9 billion in ad spending, according to preliminary estimates from the research firm Borrell Associates. Online spending, much of it on social networks like Facebook, has been a significant factor in campaigns for a decade, but tighter rules imposed by digital giants in the wake of the 2016 election could have curbed some of that growth. |

Macron and tech giants launch 'Paris call' to fix internet ills Posted: 11 Nov 2018 10:08 PM PST France and U.S. technology giants including Microsoft on Monday urged world governments and companies to sign up to a new initiative to regulate the internet and fight threats such as cyber attacks, online censorship and hate speech. With the launch of a declaration entitled the 'Paris call for trust and security in cyberspace', French President Emmanuel Macron is hoping to revive efforts to regulate cyberspace after the last round of United Nations negotiations failed in 2017. The Paris call was initially pushed for by tech companies but was redrafted by French officials to include work done by U.N. experts in recent years. |

Liberal Dark-Money Group Files Suit to Validate Late Mail-In Ballots in Florida Posted: 12 Nov 2018 10:11 AM PST VoteVets, an influential liberal super PAC reliant on obscure funding sources, filed suit Monday in an effort to validate mail-in ballots received after Election Day as part of Democrats' ongoing effort to win the Florida gubernatorial and Senate victories in recounts. VoteVets joined the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in asking the courts to intercede on behalf of voters who mailed their ballots on time but were effectively disenfranchised when the post office failed to deliver them by the Election Day deadline. |
Posted: 12 Nov 2018 07:25 AM PST A former high school coach of the gunman who killed 12 people at a Southern California bar says he was a "sadistic" teenager who joined the military so he would "kill for his country". Evie Cluke says that years before his shooting rampage, the 28-year-old former marine was already displaying volatile and intimidating behaviour. The educator, who coached Long on Newbury Park High School's track team in 2007 and 2008, said he was a "ticking time bomb" who constantly lost his temper, threw tantrums and would scream at coaches when he didn't like their decisions. |
Exclusive: Britain's Hunt sees prospect for Yemen talks, news on Khashoggi inquiry Posted: 12 Nov 2018 04:39 PM PST Following meetings in Riyadh with the Saudi king and crown prince - the main proponent of Saudi military intervention in Yemen - Hunt also said he anticipated "rapid progress" in bringing to justice those responsible for last month's murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "I was led to believe that certainly the legal processes are going to be starting very soon indeed and we should hear something about that quite shortly," Hunt told Reuters in an interview. Hunt's trip, which included a meeting in the United Arab Emirates with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, comes as Riyadh, already under scrutiny for civilian deaths in Yemen air strikes, is facing global criticism and potential sanctions over Khashoggi's killing inside its Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2. |

Wall Street titan Goldman Sachs 'cheated' Malaysia: PM Posted: 12 Nov 2018 04:32 PM PST Goldman Sachs "cheated" Malaysia, its leader Mahathir Mohamad said, after two former bankers from the Wall Street titan were charged over a scandal that allegedly saw billions looted from state coffers. The US Justice Department unveiled criminal charges this month against ex-Goldman bankers Tim Leissner and Ng Chong Hwa, accusing them of working with a Malaysian financier to launder huge sums allegedly stolen from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB. In an interview with broadcaster CNBC, Prime Minister Mahathir said that "obviously we've been cheated", when asked about Goldman's dealings in Malaysia. |

Indonesia says situation facing crew of doomed Lion Air jet not in flight manual Posted: 12 Nov 2018 09:06 PM PST The comments shed further light on the areas under scrutiny as investigators prepare to publish their preliminary report on Nov. 28 or 29, one month after the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX dived into the Java Sea, killing all 189 on board. Now the investigation's focus appears to be expanding to the clarity of U.S.-approved procedures to help pilots prevent the 737 MAX over-reacting to such a data loss, and methods for training them. Dennis Tajer, a 737 captain and spokesman for Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents American Airlines Group Inc pilots, said his union was informed after the crash about a new system Boeing had installed on 737 MAX jets that could command the plane's nose down in certain situations to prevent a stall. |

Officials said the bodies of five people were found in burned-out homes and the sixth was found in a vehicle in northern California's Camp Fire, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters on Sunday evening. The so-called Camp Fire in the northern part of the state has claimed at least 29 lives since it broke out on Thursday. |

Corsi, an associate of the longtime Donald Trump adviser Roger Stone, said on his online live stream on Monday that he would soon be charged "for some form of lying" by Mueller's team, which is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election. |

Still alive in Paradise after fire, but then what? Posted: 12 Nov 2018 10:39 PM PST Some plan to travel far away, while others are determined to rebuild their lives here, but most of the survivors of the deadly fire that ravaged the California town of Paradise are still in shock. "For now, I'm so grateful to be here alive with my family," said Diane Mullin, who escaped the flames but couldn't hold back her tears. The so-called Camp Fire has now killed at least 42 people, making the deadliest wildfire in California history. |

Mattis to travel to Mexico border on Wednesday Posted: 13 Nov 2018 09:55 AM PST U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he would travel to the border with Mexico on Wednesday following the deployment of thousands of troops to bolster President Donald Trump's efforts to crack down on illegal immigration. "I'll visit the border tomorrow," Mattis said before the start of a meeting with his Qatari counterpart. It will be Mattis' first visit to the border since the military announced that over 7,000 U.S. troops would go to or near the border with Mexico as a caravan of Central American migrants slowly heads to the United States. |
Firefighters battle blazes on two fronts in California, 44 dead Posted: 13 Nov 2018 01:49 PM PST Thousands of firefighters battled blazes in northern and southern California on Tuesday as body recovery teams searched the remains of houses and charred cars for victims of the deadliest wildfires in the history of the US state. Most of the fatalities have been reported from the town of Paradise, population 26,000, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Sacramento. Paradise, which is home to many retirees and has experienced an unusually dry fall, was virtually razed to the ground by the fast-moving "Camp Fire" blaze. |
