Chelsea Manning announces hunger strike over treatment in prison Posted: 09 Sep 2016 04:33 PM PDT U.S. soldier Chelsea Manning, serving a 35-year prison term for passing classified files to WikiLeaks, said on Friday that she would refuse to eat until given help for her gender dysphoria and "treated with dignity, respect and humanity" by the government. The 28-year-old Army private, who was born male but revealed after being convicted of espionage that she identifies as a woman, tried to commit suicide in July over what her representatives said was the government's denial of appropriate treatment for those gender issues. The Army announced later that month that it would investigate Manning for misconduct in connection with the attempt to take her own life, a probe that could lead to indefinite solitary confinement, reclassification into maximum security or additional prison time. |
The Upside of Fewer People Asking Librarians for Help Posted: 09 Sep 2016 04:20 PM PDT Since the advent of the internet and e-readers, there have been plenty of predictions about the end of public libraries. According to the results, released Friday, of a Pew Research Center survey on Americans' attitudes toward libraries, use of libraries is up, people find them useful, and they still want to check out printed books. A full 77 percent of folks also said that "public libraries provide them with the resources they need," and 66 percent said that shutting down a facility "would have a major impact on their community." Roughly two-thirds of people who had visited a library or a bookmobile said they'd done so to check out a book. |
Clinton, Trump escalate fight in dramatic week on national security Posted: 09 Sep 2016 03:58 PM PDT By Steve Holland and Jeff Mason WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton clashed over national security again on Friday, with Trump calling his Democratic rival "trigger-happy" and Clinton arguing his proposals would make the world a more dangerous place. The two White House hopefuls have waged a running battle this week over who is best placed to command the world's most powerful military, with both touting their support from retired military leaders and attacking their opponent's temperament and judgment. Trump also injected drama into the national security debate this week by wholeheartedly endorsing Russian President Vladimir Putin as a strong leader who has fared better than U.S. President Barack Obama. |
Violent extremist groups take special aim at women, U.N. official says Posted: 09 Sep 2016 03:55 PM PDT By Anastasia Moloney SALVADOR, BRAZIL (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Armed extremist and fundamentalist groups worldwide are increasingly eroding women's rights and undermining gains made in gender equality in recent years, the head of U.N. Women said on Friday. Militant groups from Boko Haram in Nigeria to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria target women in their attacks on human rights, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the head of the United Nations' women's advocacy agency, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an interview. Trump courts core conservatives, Clinton talks security Posted: 09 Sep 2016 03:23 PM PDT Donald Trump delivered a call to arms for America's conservative right Friday, urging them to vote en masse on Election Day to defeat White House rival Hillary Clinton, who urged more robust national security efforts. Trump also took Clinton to task over her diplomatic record, blasting her for a second straight day as a "trigger-happy" secretary of state who emboldened North Korea into conducting yet another nuclear test and put Iran on the path to atomic weapons. "Her tenure has brought us only war and destruction and death," Trump said. |

Intelligence Community Faces a Future of Increasing Complexity Posted: 09 Sep 2016 03:18 PM PDT WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cybersecurity will remain as much of a challenge for the next administration as it has been for the current White House, especially in light of the constant barrage of cyber attacks from nation states, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said. Clapper made the remarks at the opening at the Intelligence & National Security Summit held in Washington, D.C. this week. AFCEA International and the Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) sponsored the two-day conference. |

Cholera blamed on U.N. peacekeepers surges in Haiti as funding vanishes Posted: 09 Sep 2016 02:15 PM PDT By Makini Brice PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - U.N.-led foreign funding has dried up for Haiti's fight against cholera, thought to have been introduced by Nepali peacekeepers, triggering a surge of deaths this year even as the global body vowed to help overcome the epidemic. The lack of support is notable because Haiti was free of cholera until 2010, when U.N. peacekeepers dumped infected sewage into a river, according to investigators. The United Nations has not legally accepted responsibility for the outbreak. |

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials told Passcode that by verifying the travelers' biometric information at border checkpoints, foreign visitors trying to overstay their visas in the US will not be able to send imposters out of the country in their place. |

Iraq expels Islamic State families from local communities Posted: 09 Sep 2016 11:33 AM PDT By Ghazwan Hassan and Saif Hameed TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi authorities are expelling the families of suspected Islamic State members from their homes as the jihadist group loses ground, raising fears of communal violence if people seek to settle old scores. Turkey says Raqa operation could work with air support Posted: 09 Sep 2016 08:47 AM PDT Turkey said on Friday a ground operation could force out Islamic State (IS) extremists from their de facto capital of Raqa in Syria if it was supported by coalition air forces. Speculation has grown of a possible joint Turkey-US operation to seize Raqa and possibly IS-held Mosul in northern Iraq after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed he had discussed the issue with US counterpart Barack Obama at the G20 in China. "If coalition forces give air support and our special forces take part, it is possible to be successful in clearing Daesh (IS) from Raqa and Mosul," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a joint press conference with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg. |
