Gorbachev calls for peace: Is there a way forward? Posted: 12 Oct 2016 02:10 PM PDT It's been 30 years since Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan met in Reykjavik to agree on a nuclear drawdown, an event that helped bring about the end of the Cold War. Given the current conflict between Russia and the United States, the lessons of the past seem as relevant as ever, Mr. Gorbachev suggested in a recent speech. Addressing participants in the international conference marking the 1986 US-Soviet Summit, the former Soviet premier expressed his concern about the current state of US-Russian relations, which he blamed on a "collapse of mutual trust." He cautioned against the use of force, in particular nuclear force, saying that military methods had not helped to resolve conflicts in Iraq, Libya, Syria or the former Yugoslavia. |
Report: ISIS is using exploding drones as battles for Iraq, Syria wear on Posted: 12 Oct 2016 01:48 PM PDT Reports out of Syria and Iraq indicate that militant groups like Hezbollah and the Islamic State have begun to rely on weaponized surveillance drones as weapons in the conflict. Syria, which has been embroiled in a civil war since March of 2011, has been scaling up the violence in recent months as countries like Russia and the US increased their support of rival factions in the conflict. The war in Syria has spurred the largest refugee crisis since World War II. |

Posted: 12 Oct 2016 12:45 PM PDT BANGKOK (AP) — Thais chanted prayers Wednesday as the country's stock market and currency tumbled and the prime minister canceled an overseas trip amid concerns about long-ailing King Bhumibol Adulyadej's health. His son, the crown prince, returned home from Germany, as Thais in pink shirts — a color associated with the king — gathered outside Siriraj hospital in Bangkok, which has been his home for much of the last decade. The royal palace said in a statement late Wednesday that the 88-year-old king's blood pressure had dropped, his liver and kidneys were not working properly and he remained on a ventilator. |
IS drone kills Kurdish fighters, hurts French troops Posted: 12 Oct 2016 12:03 PM PDT A remote-controlled jihadist hobby plane rigged with hidden explosives killed two Kurdish fighters and injured two French special operations troops near Mosul, French and US sources confirmed Wednesday. According to a US defense official, the incident unfolded October 2 when a small plane with a styrofoam body was either shot down or crashed in Erbil in northern Iraq. A French source earlier confirmed the use of a "booby-trapped drone in Iraq," while another confirmed that two French soldiers were hurt in the incident. |
Exploding Drones: ISIS Is Arming UAVs You Can Buy on Amazon Posted: 12 Oct 2016 12:02 PM PDT ISIS is arming drones you can buy on Amazon with explosives and using them against the Kurdish and Iraqi forces it is battling in Iraq. The New York Times reported yesterday that Pershmerga soldiers fighting the Islamic State in northern Iraq shot down a drone last week that exploded and killed two of them as they were examining it. By attaching explosives to small, commercially available drones such as the DJI Phantom, The Times said, ISIS can create remotely directed bombs. |
Bolt cutters expose vulnerability of North America's oil pipeline grid Posted: 12 Oct 2016 11:15 AM PDT By Liz Hampton and Ethan Lou HOUSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - All it took was a pair of bolt cutters and the elbow grease of a few climate activists to carry out an audacious act of sabotage on North America's massive oil and gas pipeline system. All they had to do was twist shut giant valves on five cross-border pipelines that together can send 2.8 million barrels a day of crude to the United States from Canada - equal to about 15 percent of daily U.S. consumption. The United States is the world's largest energy market, and the infrastructure to drill, refine, store and deliver that energy to consumers is connected by millions of miles of pipeline that are impossible to protect entirely from attack. |

Putin ally tells Americans: vote Trump or face nuclear war Posted: 12 Oct 2016 10:49 AM PDT By Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - Americans should vote for Donald Trump as president next month or risk being dragged into a nuclear war, according to a Russian ultra-nationalist ally of President Vladimir Putin who likes to compare himself to the U.S. Republican candidate. Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a flamboyant veteran lawmaker known for his fiery rhetoric, told Reuters in an interview that Trump was the only person able to de-escalate dangerous tensions between Moscow and Washington. By contrast, Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton could spark World War Three, said Zhirinovsky, who received a top state award from Putin after his pro-Kremlin Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third in Russia's parliamentary election last month. |
Islamic State drone kills two Kurdish fighters, wounds two French soldiers Posted: 12 Oct 2016 10:23 AM PDT BAGHDAD/PARIS (Reuters) - A booby-trapped drone launched by Islamic State (IS) militants killed two Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and wounded two French soldiers earlier this month north of the IS-controlled city of Mosul, Kurdish and French officials said on Wednesday. The drone blew up when Peshmerga fighters tried to lift it after it crashed to the ground, Jabbar al-Yawar, secretary general of the autonomous Kurdish region's defense ministry, told Reuters. "It seems it was booby-trapped." The French newspaper Le Monde reported on Tuesday that the drone had been intercepted in flight on Oct. 2 and exploded near the Kurdish and French soldiers when it hit the ground. |
Iraqi cleric Sadr calls for protest against Maliki's comeback Posted: 12 Oct 2016 09:47 AM PDT Powerful Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Wednesday called for a demonstration against a Iraqi court ruling that returns his bitter rival, ex-prime minister Nuri al-Maliki, to a vice-presidential position. The ruling announced on Monday by Iraq's supreme court is "an attempt to bring back corruption", Sadr said in a statement on his website. Maliki took one of three ceremonial vice-presidencies two years ago, after he failed as prime minister to stop Islamic State fighters from sweeping across the country and was pressured to step down by both the United States and Iran. |
Turkey revives plans to strengthen Erdogan's office, lira falls Posted: 12 Oct 2016 09:20 AM PDT By Ercan Gurses and Gulsen Solaker ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's government said on Wednesday it would revive efforts to change the constitution and expand the powers of the presidency, helping send the lira currency to a record low as investors fretted about renewed political uncertainty. The stronger presidency long wanted by incumbent Tayyip Erdogan is a deeply divisive issue, with his supporters adamant it will give the nation of 78 million the strong leadership it needs, but opponents afraid of creeping authoritarianism. The two biggest opposition parties, the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), both oppose ending Turkey's parliamentary system and some opinion polls in the past have shown a majority of Turks also do not want the change. |

Huge crowds of pilgrims pack Iraq's Karbala for Ashura Posted: 12 Oct 2016 08:27 AM PDT Huge crowds of black-clad Shiite Muslim pilgrims thronged the Iraqi shrine city of Karbala Wednesday, weeping and beating their chests in mourning for the seventh-century killing of the prophet's grandson. Shiites around the world mark Ashura, but attacks on those commemorating bloodshed 1,300 years ago often result in more mourning and loss, including in Afghanistan, where more than 30 people were killed in attacks on Shiites in less than 24 hours. Shiites in Iraq too have come under frequent attack by Sunni extremist group IS, which considers them heretics. |
OPEC invites Russia to meeting, eyeing higher oil price Posted: 12 Oct 2016 08:20 AM PDT OPEC said Wednesday it was inviting Russia and other key non-members to a meeting later this month as the oil cartel and Moscow seek to tighten cooperation to boost historically low crude prices. The announcement came after a meeting in Istanbul between several top OPEC energy ministers with their Russian counterpart Alexander Novak aimed at advancing joint efforts to bolster oil prices whose lows have hurt the highly-dependent economies of crude producers. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Energy Congress in Istanbul, which on Monday saw a vow by Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow to impose curbs on energy output to match OPEC cuts that caused a spurt in oil prices. |

Turkey says its troops to stay in Iraq until Islamic State cleared from Mosul Posted: 12 Oct 2016 06:58 AM PDT By Tulay Karadeniz and Ercan Gurses ANKARA (Reuters) - A planned U.S.-backed operation to drive Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Mosul could cause "blood and fire" in the region if not carefully handled, Turkey warned on Wednesday, saying it would keep troops nearby despite Baghdad's opposition. President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey, locked in an escalating row with Iraq over who should take part in the planned Mosul assault, would do all it could to prevent the operation from deepening sectarian conflict on its borders. Mosul, home to up to 1.5 million people, has been the headquarters of Islamic State's self-declared caliphate in northern Iraq since 2014. |

OPEC points to larger 2017 oil surplus despite deal to cut Posted: 12 Oct 2016 05:40 AM PDT OPEC reported a increase in its oil production in September to the highest in at least eight years and raised its forecast for 2017 non-OPEC supply growth, pointing to a larger surplus next year despite the group's deal to cut output. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries pumped 33.39 million barrels per day (bpd) last month, according to figures OPEC collects from secondary sources, up 220,000 bpd from August, OPEC said in a monthly report on Wednesday. The 63-year-old Bosnian, who took over in March last year, had come under fire after the Blue Samurai started the final round of Asian qualifying with a shock home loss to the United Arab Emirates. The draw in Melbourne, however, prompted Japan Football Association technical director Akira Nishino to confirm the coach would still be in place when group leaders Saudi Arabia visit Saitama on Nov. 15. |
