Tens of Cat Mummies and 100 Cat Statues Found Near Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Posted: 12 Nov 2018 08:26 AM PST Ancient Egyptians seem to have been "cat people," or at least cat mummy people. Researchers have dug up several mummified cats alongside about 100 wooden cat statues in a tomb complex near a pyramid built for the pharaoh Userkaf, who reigned from 2291 B.C. to 2289 B.C., the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced Nov. 10. The burials are located near the site of Saqqara in Egypt. |

Summit bears fruit as South Korea flies tangerines to North Posted: 10 Nov 2018 11:42 PM PST The present comes after the North Koreans gave South Korean President Moon Jae-in two tonnes of pricey pine mushrooms after a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang in September. North Korea has pursued nuclear and missile program in defiance of U.N. sanctions and South Korean officials said last week they had tested the mushrooms for radiation after an opposition lawmaker complained. The Jeju tangerines were packed in 20,000 boxes and will be flown to Pyongyang by four C-130 aircraft during multiple flights on Sunday and Monday, the Blue House said in a statement. |

Republicans Remain in a Strong Position in State Legislatures Posted: 12 Nov 2018 03:30 AM PST Most of the commentary on the 2018 midterms has focused on the federal level, where Democrats won a majority in the House and Republicans extended their lead in the Senate. When combined with the governor results we can see that Democrats made important gains across the states, but the Republicans remain in a strong position. Going into the 2018 midterm, Republicans had complete control of 26 state governments — meaning that their party held both chambers of the state legislature as well as the governorship. |
Indonesia urges more training for pilots after Lion Air crash Posted: 12 Nov 2018 06:55 AM PST The comments shed further light on the areas under scrutiny as investigators prepare to publish their preliminary report on Nov. 28 or 29, one month after the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX dived into the Java Sea, killing all 189 on board. Now the investigation's focus appears to be expanding to the clarity of U.S.-approved procedures to help pilots prevent the 737 MAX over-reacting to such a data loss, and methods for training them. Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of Indonesia's transportation safety committee of crash investigators (KNKT), said on Monday that Indonesian regulators would tighten training requirements as a result of the findings of the investigation so far. |
China postpones lifting rhino, tiger parts ban Posted: 12 Nov 2018 05:28 AM PST China appeared to backtrack on a controversial decision to lift a ban on trading tiger bones and rhinoceros horns, saying it has been postponed, state media reported Monday. The State Council, China's cabinet, unexpectedly announced last month that it would allow the sale of rhino and tiger products under "special circumstances", a move conservationists likened to signing a death warrant for the endangered species. Permitted uses included scientific research, sales of cultural relics, and "medical research or in healing". |

Ukraine separatists elect leaders in defiance of West Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:46 PM PST Separatist leaders in Russian-backed areas of eastern Ukraine on Monday looked set for an expected victory according to preliminary results in polls condemned as illegal by Kiev and Western countries. Elections in the Donetsk and Lugansk "People's Republics", controlled by separatists since breaking away from Ukraine's pro-Western government in 2014, took place after the killing of the rebel Donetsk "president" in a bomb attack in August. "Today we have proved to the world that we can not only fight, not only win on the battlefield but also build a state based on real democratic principles," Denis Pushilin, the 37-year-old acting Donetsk leader who is expected to win, told a crowd during a concert at the main square. |

"Life goes on," said Alison Brett, visiting Melbourne from Australia's Northern Territory. Melbourne's Pellegrini Espresso Bar, full to overflowing with floral arrangements left by mourners, remained closed on Sunday as visitors placed flowers on the pavement outside and taped letters of condolence on the cafe door. |

Tesla Model 3 key fob sold out in one day Posted: 12 Nov 2018 05:50 AM PST After an alarming video surfaced of car thieves stealing a Tesla with nothing but a phone and tablet, Tesla released a Model 3 key fob without the easily intercepted passive entry feature for US customers on Friday. After receiving constant requests from Model 3 owners who have not been satisfied with opening their car via a credit card-like key or via their smartphone and the Tesla mobile app, Tesla finally released a Model 3 key fob on Friday -- those in the early access program already got their hands on the device last month. |
Zimbabwe govt denies opposition kidnap claims Posted: 11 Nov 2018 11:14 AM PST Zimbabwe's government publicly denied claims on Sunday that its spy agency had attempted to kidnap main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa as he left a rally this weekend. Chamisa's Movement for Democratic Change party tweeted Saturday that "Central Intelligence Organisation agents (participated) in a failed attempt to abduct" Chamisa following a rally in Marondera, 72 kilometres (45 miles) east of Harare. German president joins Armistice ceremony in London Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:16 AM PST President Frank-Walter Steinmeier became the first German leader to take part in Britain's national service of remembrance on Sunday, 100 years since the end of World War I. Across Britain, individuals and communities held two minutes of silence at 11am (1100 GMT) to remember the end of the four-year conflict which claimed around 18 million lives. In London, the moment was marked by the chiming of Big Ben, which has been largely silent since renovation work began in August 2017 but which still sounds for important national events. |
