Posted: 08 Jul 2016 05:25 PM PDT MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The new Philippine president blamed U.S. intervention for the bloody conflicts in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries in his latest criticism of Manila's closest security ally. President Rodrigo Duterte suggested in a speech Friday that intrusive policy was to blame for attacks on U.S. soil, saying, "It is not that the Middle East is exporting terrorism to America, America imported terrorism." "They forced their way to Iraq ... look at Iraq now, look what happened to Libya, look what happened to Syria," he told the Muslim community in southern Davao city in a ceremony marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. |

Use of Dallas 'bomb robot' to kill revives police militarization issue Posted: 08 Jul 2016 04:35 PM PDT By Dustin Volz and Isma'il Kushkush WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Dallas police ended a standoff with a gunman Friday morning by remotely detonating a "bomb robot," an unprecedented tactic by officers that rekindles concerns about the militarization of local law enforcement in the United States. The bomb blast killed a black U.S. Army reservist identified by authorities as Micah Xavier Johnson, who shot dead five police officers and wounded seven others in Dallas on Thursday night following a peaceful protest over police shootings of black men. "It's a first by police," said Peter Singer, author of "Wired for War," a book on the use of robots in conflict zones. |

(AP) — A Virginia man has been charged with attempting to assist the Islamic State by photographing targets in the Washington, D.C., area for what he thought would be a video encouraging lone-wolf terrorist attacks in the nation's capital. |
'Bomb Robot' Kills Dallas Shooter: How Police Did It Posted: 08 Jul 2016 02:35 PM PDT A suspect in yesterday's (July 7) Dallas shooting — during which five police officers were killed and seven officers were injured — died after police deployed a remote-controlled bomb-disposal robot carrying an explosive device. Dallas Police Chief David Brown explained during a press conference that police sent the robot in after negotiations with the suspect broke down and he exchanged gunfire with officers. |
Newlywed, Iraq veteran among the Dallas police officers killed Posted: 08 Jul 2016 02:18 PM PDT Seven other police officers and two civilians were wounded in the shooting at the end of a protest over this week's killing of two black men by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. Transit Police Officer Brent Thompson, 43, worked for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system since 2009 and was the first officer killed in the line of duty since the transit system formed a police department in 1989, DART said on its website. |
Iraqi PM dismisses top Baghdad security officials after huge bombing Posted: 08 Jul 2016 02:09 PM PDT By Saif Hameed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's prime minister fired three officials in charge of Baghdad's security on Friday after last weekend's bombing that killed nearly 300 people and caused public outrage over the inadequacy of the emergency services and security apparatus. The bombing, claimed by the ultra-hardline Sunni militant group Islamic State (IS), was the deadliest in Iraq since U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein 13 years ago. Islamic State has lost ground since last year to U.S.-backed government forces and Iranian-backed Shi'ite Muslim militias advancing into territories they control in northern and western Iraq, but IS retains the ability to strike the heart of Baghdad. |
NATO agrees to reinforce eastern Poland, Baltic states against Russia Posted: 08 Jul 2016 01:55 PM PDT By Robin Emmott and Sabine Siebold WARSAW (Reuters) - NATO leaders agreed on Friday to deploy military forces to the Baltic states and eastern Poland for the first time and increase air and sea patrols to reassure allies who were once part of the Soviet bloc following Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine. Germany will lead the battalion in Lithuania, Britain in Estonia and Canada in Latvia. |
Dallas robot bomb highlights shift in police technology Posted: 08 Jul 2016 01:13 PM PDT The "bomb robot" killing of a suspected Dallas shooter may be the first lethal use of an automated device by American police, and underscores the growing role of technology in law enforcement. City police chief David Brown told reporters Friday that officials "saw no other option but to use our bomb robot" to detonate to avoid any further danger after sniper fire killed five Dallas officers. "Yes, this is 1st use of robot in this way in policing," said a tweet from New America Foundation fellow Peter Singer, who heads a technology advisory firm and has written on 21st century warfare. |
7 Global Goats That Could Bring Market Mayhem Posted: 08 Jul 2016 12:36 PM PDT How or whether these seven goats will impact Wall Street remains to be seen. Wall Street has always been an upside down place. China's GDP weighs $10.3 trillion -- second to the U.S. at $17 trillion -- and represents about 17 percent of the world's economy. |
Iraq PM sacks security chiefs as new attack kills 40 Posted: 08 Jul 2016 12:26 PM PDT The Iraqi premier sacked three Baghdad security chiefs following a devastating bombing in the capital, his office said on Friday, hours after another attack to the north left 40 dead. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office also confirmed that he had accepted the interior minister's resignation, which was submitted following the Sunday bombing in Baghdad that killed 292 people. The Islamic State jihadist group said it carried out the latest attack -- on a Shiite shrine in the town of Balad that began Thursday evening -- as well as the Baghdad blast in Baghdad. |

For most demographic groups, unemployment rates tick up Posted: 08 Jul 2016 10:24 AM PDT Unemployment rates rose for most demographic groups in June, but largely for an encouraging reason: More Americans started or renewed job hunts, and many didn't immediately land work. But the figures reflect ... |
Navy veteran Patrick Zamarripa ID’d as 2nd officer killed in Dallas shooting Posted: 08 Jul 2016 10:05 AM PDT A second officer slain in Thursday's sniper attack on law enforcement officials has been identified by family members as Patrick Zamarripa. Zamarripa's father, Rick, told the Washington Post that he texted his son when he heard reports of gunshots during a protest downtown. Upon arriving at the hospital, Rick Zamarripa said he learned from another officer that his son had died. |
Iraq's war children face void without world's help: UNICEF country chief Posted: 08 Jul 2016 09:37 AM PDT By Tom Esslemont LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A generation of children face the bleak prospect of going without an education unless the Iraqi government, its allies and aid agencies rebuild communities torn apart by years of war, a senior U.N. children's agency official said on Friday. Peter Hawkins, UNICEF representative in Iraq, said recent fighting between government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, and Islamic State fighters, had cut off thousands of children from school and healthcare. |

Sharp fall in asylum seekers arriving in Germany: ministry Posted: 08 Jul 2016 07:52 AM PDT The number of people seeking asylum in Germany fell sharply in the first half of the year as tougher rules at home and border-closures abroad started to kick in, the interior ministry said on Friday. "I wouldn't hold my breath that this will remain so in the coming months," Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told reporters. Border closers throughout the Balkans, an EU-Turkey deal to stop sea arrivals in Greece and tougher asylum rules in Germany were among the main reasons, officials said. |
Corbyn rebels lose steam but battle for UK Labour rages Posted: 08 Jul 2016 07:06 AM PDT A damning report into the Iraq war has bolstered embattled British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn but an intense battle for the party's soul is still raging after the Brexit vote. Veteran socialist Corbyn has hung on in the face of overwhelming pressure, clinging on after a vote of no confidence last week in which 75 percent of the party's lawmakers voted against his leadership. "Our party must never again be led by someone who is unrepentant in their record supporting war," MP Jon Trickett told thousands of Corbyn supporters at a London rally on Wednesday, laying down the gauntlet for any potential usurpers. |
German support for Merkel, EU surges after Brexit vote: poll Posted: 08 Jul 2016 05:42 AM PDT Public support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel has soared since Britain voted to leave the European Union, an opinion poll showed, helping reverse a fall in her popularity caused by the refugee crisis. The survey, by pollster Infratest dimap for national broadcaster ARD, also showed a sharp rise in German support for the EU as for the first time a majority said there were more advantages than disadvantages to being in the bloc. A record 52 percent said that EU membership was advantageous, 13 percentage points higher than in a poll conducted before the British referendum on June 23. |

Eight Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets near the southeastern town of Semdinli and seven others in northern Iraq, where the group's leadership is based, were hit in the air strikes, the sources said. Following intelligence gathered by drones, jets took off from Diyarbakir, the mainly Kurdish region's largest city, hitting shelters and groups of militants across territory where Turkey regularly carries out air strikes against the PKK. |
For NATO, key challenges range from Russia to missiles Posted: 08 Jul 2016 01:30 AM PDT WARSAW, Poland (AP) — For NATO, its two-day summit beginning Friday may be the most crucial since the Cold War. Alliance leaders will tackle an unprecedentedly complex set of challenges in search of ways to better guarantee their nations' security. Here are some key challenges, and what NATO heads of state and government are expected to do about each: |
Turkey's Erdogan calls on NATO to do more on fighting militant attacks Posted: 08 Jul 2016 12:15 AM PDT Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called on NATO to do more to fight the threat of global terrorism, saying the 28-nation alliance needed to "update" itself to better adapt to new security threats. NATO leaders are meeting at a summit in Warsaw on Friday where they are expected to display their resolve towards a resurgent Russia - despite what some see as a weakening of the West due to Britain's vote to leave the European Union. Speaking to reporters before his departure to Warsaw late on Thursday, Erdogan said he would press the leaders of fellow NATO countries to do more to fight militant attacks like the triple suicide bombing last week that killed 45 people at Istanbul's main airport. |
Australia pledges extra $300 million for Afghan security forces Posted: 07 Jul 2016 08:34 PM PDT Australia will pay an extra $300 million to help develop Afghanistan's security forces, the government said on Friday ahead of a NATO leaders' summit in Warsaw, where tenuous security in Afghanistan will be a central discussion topic. Australia, a firm U.S. ally in its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, had originally pledged $500 million from 2010-2017 but will now provide an extra $100 million annually until 2020. The announcement of extra funding came two days after U.S. President Barack Obama said he had decided to postpone plans to cut the number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan almost in half by the end of the year, instead keeping 8,400 troops there from January. |
