Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's death robs Israel of spiritual and political powerhouse Posted: 07 Oct 2013 01:14 PM PDT The passing of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef today sparked an outpouring of appreciation for a man who combined an unparalleled knowledge of Jewish law with a care for the common man, becoming one of Israel's most influential spiritual leaders. An intensely polarizing figure criticized by some as racist, especially toward Arabs, he nevertheless leaves a void in Israeli society and politics. Few have the blend of intellectual genius, political acumen, and unusually broad appeal that made him not only a revered rabbi but a formidable fixture in Israeli politics. ... |

U.S. opens door to Iran taking part in Syria peace conference Posted: 07 Oct 2013 12:33 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Monday it would be more open to Iran taking part in a long-delayed peace conference on Syria if Iran publicly backed a 2012 statement calling for a transitional government in Syria. The United States accuses Iran of supporting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a civil war that has run for more than two years, killed more than 100,000 people and eluded all efforts at a peaceful settlement. The June 30, 2012, "Geneva Communique" sought to chart a path to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict. ... |

Lebanon bans two films in setback for tolerant image Posted: 07 Oct 2013 08:56 AM PDT By Stephen Kalin BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon has banned the screening of a film about homosexuality and another on short-term "pleasure marriages" practiced in some Muslim communities, in a blow to its reputation as a bastion of tolerance in a deeply conservative region. The films, which had been due to be shown at the Beirut International Film Festival that opened last week, were blocked by a government censorship committee, festival organizers said. ... |

Billions at stake for economic winners and losers of Iran thaw Posted: 07 Oct 2013 05:54 AM PDT By Andrew Torchia DUBAI (Reuters) - After years of being caught in the geopolitical crossfire over Iran's disputed nuclear program, Iranian businessmen in Dubai are daring to hope that signs of a diplomatic thaw will allow crippling economic sanctions to be lifted. The wary optimism in Dubai, traditionally a major hub for Iranian commerce, reflects a tantalizing prospect for businessmen across the world: that progress toward an agreement on Iran's nuclear plans could allow it to rejoin the global trading and financial system. ... |
