FBI arrests New Mexico compound members on new charges Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:08 PM PDT Five residents of a New Mexico compound were arrested on Friday by the FBI for violating firearms and conspiracy laws in what one of their lawyers described as a "bad development" for the group who are accused of planning anti-government attacks. The arrests and charges came two days after two New Mexico judges dismissed child abuse charges against all five defendants due to a procedural fumble by state prosecutors and allowed three of them to be released from jail. |

US ends funding for UN Palestinian refugee agency Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:50 PM PDT Washington has long been the UN Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) largest donor but is "no longer willing to shoulder the very disproportionate share of the burden," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement. Just hours after the Palestinians warned such a move would further undermine the already flailing chances of peace with Israel, Nauert said there would be no additional contributions beyond a $60 million dollar payment made in January. |

Archbishop who called on Pope to resign says corruption reaches the top Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:22 AM PDT Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has gone into hiding since conservative media published an 11-page statement in which he alleged the pope knew for years about sexual misconduct by an American cardinal and did nothing about it. Vigano has been communicating through Aldo Maria Valli, an Italian television journalist who Vigano consulted several times before releasing his statement last Sunday when the pope was in Ireland. Italian media has reported he was upset because he was never made a cardinal by former Pope Benedict or because Francis blocked his further advancement in the Church. |
Russia-backed leader of separatist east Ukraine region reportedly killed in blast Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:43 AM PDT A prominent pro-Russian separatist leader in eastern Ukraine has been assassinated in one of the highest profile killings in the region since war broke out in 2014. Alexander Zakharchenko, the president of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, was reported killed in an explosion in a cafe in Donetsk, the breakaway statelet's capital, on Friday afternoon. His death was confirmed by separatist officials and Ukraine's Security Service, the SBU. Zakharchenko suffered head injuries that were not survivable and died in hospital, Russian media reported on Friday. Two other ministers of the self-declared separatist government caught up in the blast have been hospitalised with severe injuries. The former mining electrician had run the DPR, one of two breakaway statelets sponsored and backed by Moscow, since 2014. He is the most senior of a string of separatist field commanders and officials to suffer mysterious violent deaths since a 2015 peace deal slowed but failed to end the conflict. Alexander Kazakov, an advisor to Zakharchenko, said the attack may have been carried out by the same people who murdered Arsen "Motorola" Pavlov and Mikhail "Givi" Tolstykh, prominent field commanders who were assassinated in explosions in 2016 and 2017. He called the blast a "terrorist attack" and said a device had been planted in the cafe "deliberately" and "in advance." Police and security forces in Donetsk detained several suspects in the immediate aftermath of the blast, Russia's Interfax news agency reported, citing an unidentified source familiar with the situation. The source claimed the detainees were Ukrainian "saboteurs". Russian officials also accused Ukraine of carrying out the assassination. "We have every reason to believe that the regime in Kiev is behind his murder," Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday. "Kiev's war party is carrying out a terrorist scenario, worsening the situation in the region that is complicated enough," she added. Ukraine denied any involvement in the incident. Olena Gitlyanska, the SBU spokeswoman, attributed the attack to "internal conflicts" within the region. Igor Guskov, the SBU head's chief of staff, said on Ukrainian television that he believed Russia may have been involved in the killing. "We are not excluding the possibility of Russian law enforcement services attempting to eliminate a notorious figure which, according to our information, was getting in the way and became redundant," Mr Guskov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. Mr Zakharchenko, 42, became the leader of the DPR after fighting against Ukrainian government forces in the war that broke out four years ago. He was named the head of the breakaway region after winning by a landslide in a controversial election, condemned by the European Union as "illegal and illegitimate." Prior to that he was the head of the "cabinet" of the region. Russian-backed security forces put Donetsk on lockdown on Friday evening and blocked all movement into and out of the self-proclaimed republic as they continued a manhunt for suspected perpetrators. An emergency session of the government was summoned to select an acting head of the statelet. |
Suffering a stroke may double the risk of dementia finds large-scale study Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:02 AM PDT In the largest study of its kind ever conducted, new UK research has found that people who suffer a stroke could be around twice as likely to develop dementia. After taking into account other risk factors for dementia, such as blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the researchers found that having a stroke still significantly increased the risk of the condition, providing the strongest evidence yet that stroke plays a role in dementia risk. |
Judge gives U.S. more time to decide on retrying Manafort on deadlocked charges Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:55 PM PDT U.S. prosecutors have more time to decide whether to retry former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on 10 criminal charges that a jury deadlocked on last week, a judge ordered on Thursday. U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis delayed the deadline for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to make the decision until one week after Ellis rules on any post-trial motions that Manafort may submit. The original deadline had been Wednesday, which prosecutors said would be difficult to meet because Manafort's lawyers had requested a 30-day extension to file their post-trial motions. |

U.N. fears chemical weapons in Syria battle with '10,000 terrorists' Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:34 AM PDT The United Nations called on Russia, Iran and Turkey on Thursday to forestall a battle in Syria's Idlib province which would affect millions of civilians and could see both militants and the government potentially using chlorine as a chemical weapon. U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said there was a high concentration of foreign fighters in Idlib, including an estimated 10,000 fighters designated by the U.N. as terrorists, who he said belonged to the al-Nusra Front and al Qaeda. |

"Hot beverages is one of the few remaining segments of the total beverage landscape where Coca-Cola does not have a global brand. Trump administration cuts aid funding for Palestinian refugees Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:25 PM PDT The United States is ending its decades of funding for the UN agency that helps Palestinian refugees, a week after slashing bilateral US aid for projects in the West Bank and Gaza. The US supplies nearly 30 per cent of the total budget of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and had been demanding reforms in the way it is run. The US State Department said in a written statement the United States "will no longer commit further funding to this irredeemably flawed operation". |

SEE ALSO: This Instagram poet is making young people feel less alone That's why the October issue of Cosmopolitan UK is already getting a lot of buzz, despite not having hit the stands yet. The cover girl is supermodel Tess Holliday. Dressed in a swimsuit, Holliday poses on the cover blowing a kiss to all the fat-shamers out there.
