More than 100 shot in Chicago during Fourth of July weekend Posted: 05 Jul 2017 01:16 PM PDT More than 100 people were shot in Chicago during the Fourth of July long holiday weekend. Almost half the victims were shot between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. The violent weekend occurred after the Department of Justice and the Chicago Police Department announced last week the new details of the Chicago Gun Strike Force, a partnership between federal and local authorities to combat the rising levels of gun violence in the city. |
Cambodia deports 74 suspected of internet extortion home to China Posted: 05 Jul 2017 11:59 PM PDT Cambodia sent home on Thursday 74 Chinese nationals wanted in China on suspicion of extorting money from people there over the internet and by telephone, Cambodian police said. A team of Chinese police arrived in Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh on a China Southern Airline flight to pick up the suspects who had been detained in Cambodia. "They established places to commit crime by extorting money from people over the phone," Uk Heisela, the head of the Cambodian police investigation, told reporters. |
US leads sanctions push after NKorea 'escalation' Posted: 05 Jul 2017 04:50 PM PDT The United States led a push at the UN Security Council Wednesday for tougher sanctions on North Korea, while warning the isolated regime's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile had drastically narrowed the path for diplomacy. In a hard-hitting address to the council, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday's ICBM test had made "the world a more dangerous place," and that Washington was ready to use force if need be to deal with the threat of a nuclear-armed Pyongyang. |

Bare-chested Pamplona marchers call for end to bull runs Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:26 AM PDT Around 100 shirtless protesters covered in red powder called for a ban on bullfighting and bull runs as they marched through the streets of Pamplona on Wednesday, in a prelude to the northern Spanish city's famous bull festival. The activists from animal rights groups People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and AnimaNaturalis wore horns on their head and bore slogans including 'Stop Bull Fights' painted in black on their chests. The annual San Fermin festival draws thousands from across the world to brave the 875-metre course through the narrow streets of the medieval city, along which runners in white shirts and red scarves are chased by bulls. |

Hong Kong seizes 7.2 tonnes of ivory Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:39 AM PDT More than seven tonnes of ivory worth over US$9 million was seized in Hong Kong, officials said Thursday, the largest bust of its kind in the city in three decades. The 7,200 kilogramme (16,000 pound) haul was hidden underneath frozen fish and raised suspicions because of the high transportation fees listed on the bill of import. Customs officials in the southern Chinese city said the cargo had come from Malaysia and was believed to have been the work of a major smuggling ring. |

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:17 AM PDT National Public Radio (NPR) tweeted the Declaration of Independence line by line for the 4 July holiday and Donald Trump's supporters were not impressed. NPR meant the series of more than a 100 tweets as a celebration of the founding document of the country and did it to honour of a 29-year tradition of reading the Declaration on air. Some saw the tweets as particularly relevant to the state of current affairs and praised the action as a reminder of why federal funding for the public broadcaster should not be cut, as the Trump administration has proposed. |

Azeri woman and child killed by rebels near Nagorno-Karabakh boundary: defense ministry Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:14 AM PDT BAKU/YEREVAN (Reuters) - An Azeri woman and a child were killed and another civilian was wounded by Armenian-backed rebels near the boundary with the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan's defense ministry said on Wednesday. Sporadic exchanges of fire in the fight for control over the region - inside Azerbaijan but controlled by ethnic Armenians - have stoked fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the South Caucasus, which is criss-crossed by oil and gas pipelines. "Two residents of the village of Alkhanly, including a two-year-old girl, were killed and one was wounded on July 4 as a result of shelling by Armenian forces," Azeri defense ministry spokesman Vagif Dergakhly told a news conference. |
Peru reconstructs face of woman who ruled 1,700 years ago Posted: 05 Jul 2017 08:43 AM PDT Introducing the Lady of Cao: using high-tech 3-D printing and based on the skull of an ancient mummy, scientists have reconstructed the face of a woman who governed in northern Peru 1,700 years ago. The woman's mummified remains were discovered at the Cao Viejo adobe pyramid in 2006 in the Chicama Valley, just north of the modern city of Trujillo. "Technology allows us to see the face of a political, religious and cultural leader of the past," Culture Minister Salvador del Solar said when he unveiled a life-like bust of the woman on Tuesday in Lima. |

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:01 AM PDT Donald Trump rejected the US military's plan for tackling Isis because he thought it was too similar to Barack Obama's, reports suggest. Despite the terrorist group having been all but driven out of Iraq and under threat of losing its strongholds in Syria, the White House is said to have asked officials to come up with new proposals in order to show that Mr Trump is different to his predecessor. Military leaders are reluctant to fundamentally change a strategy that appears to be working, according to the Daily Beast, which quoted two US officials and a senior administration official. |

'Placenta Pills' Led to Bacterial Infection in Baby Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:16 AM PDT A woman who ate her placenta after giving birth wound up spreading a potentially deadly infection to her baby, according to a new report of the case. The mother had paid a company to make pills from her placenta after the birth of her baby, and she began taking these placenta pills three days after the baby was born. The baby was born healthy in September 2016, but started showing signs of respiratory distress soon after birth, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). |
Exclusive: Kurdish YPG militia expects conflict with Turkey in northern Syria Posted: 05 Jul 2017 12:59 PM PDT By Rodi Said and Dominic Evans QAMISHLI, Syria/ANKARA (Reuters) - The head of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said on Wednesday that Turkish military deployments near Kurdish-held areas of northwestern Syria amounted to a "declaration of war" which could trigger clashes within days. Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus retorted that his country was not declaring war but that its forces would respond to any hostile move by the YPG, which he described as a small-scale army formed by the United States. The mounting tensions between two U.S. allies in northwestern Syria risk opening yet another front in the multi-sided conflict, in which outside powers are playing ever greater roles. |
China starts regulating bike-sharing as complaints soar Posted: 05 Jul 2017 08:13 PM PDT Authorities in Shanghai and Tianjin will impose regulations on the rapidly growing bike-sharing sector following mounting complaints over an accumulation of millions of the rentable two-wheelers on city streets, state media reported. The two metropolises have drafted rules that will require operators "to adhere to standards on production, operation and maintenance" of bicycles, Xinhua news agency said in a report late Wednesday. The regulations, to take effect October 1, will mandate a service life of three years for bikes and require companies to hire at least one maintenance employee for every 200 bicycles, it said. |
Hobby Lobby to forfeit ancient Iraqi artifacts in settlement with DOJ Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:23 PM PDT Arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby has agreed to forfeit thousands of illegally smuggled ancient Middle Eastern artifacts obtained from antiquities dealers for a Bible museum headed by its president, the company and U.S. officials said on Wednesday. The forfeiture will include some 5,500 artifacts purchased by Hobby Lobby Inc that originated from the region of modern-day Iraq and were shipped under false labels, as well as an additional $3 million to settle the civil charges, the Department of Justice said in a statement. "The protection of cultural heritage is a mission that (Homeland Security Investigations) and its partner U.S. Customs and Border Protection take very seriously as we recognize that while some may put a price on these artifacts, the people of Iraq consider them priceless," Angel Melendez, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New York, said in the statement. |

Summer's here: Time for people to get weird about sleeveless dresses in Congress Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:22 PM PDT In the brutal throes of the Washington, D.C. summer, female reporters are reportedly getting barred from the Speaker's lobby for — wait for it — wearing sleeveless dresses. According to a CBS News report, one "young, female" reporter even tried to craft makeshift sleeves out of notebook paper to avoid being ejected. (It didn't work.) On Twitter, CQ Roll Call reporter Kellie Mejdrich said she was told she'd be removed from the Speaker's lobby if she wore a sleeveless dress again. SEE ALSO: Woman kicked out of a mall for wearing what women wear in warm months Can confirm I was warned the next time I would be removed https://t.co/M0BTcFYchO — Kellie Mejdrich (@kelmej) July 6, 2017 It's clear the issue of attire in the House is important to Speaker/muscle shirt wearer Paul Ryan. In late June, he even took time to remind lawmakers to wear "appropriate business attire" — which means suits for men, sleeved dresses or suits for women, and closed-toed shoes for all. But, unfortunately, we can't quite blame Ryan for the Great Sleeve Crackdown of '17. Like many bullshit dress codes, Sleevegate rears its ugly, patriarchal head every summer when the weather heats up, no matter which party is in charge. Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump, Melania Trump, and towel charm mogul Karen Pence continue to wear as many sleeveless dresses as they want. Trump administration sued by 18 U.S. states over student loan relief Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:22 PM PDT By Lisa Lambert WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than one-third of U.S. states on Thursday sued the U.S. Education Department and Secretary Betsy DeVos over the recent suspension of rules that would have swiftly canceled the student-loan debt of people defrauded by Corinthian Colleges Inc and other for-profit schools. Last month DeVos pressed pause on the rules, due to take effect on July 1, saying they needed to be reset. Massachusetts, 17 other states and the District of Columbia said in a filing in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. the department broke federal law in announcing the delay with limited public notice and opportunity to comment. |
Iraqi PM congratulates troops on 'big victory' in Mosul Posted: 04 Jul 2017 10:20 PM PDT MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Iraq's prime minister on Tuesday congratulated his fighters on "the big victory in Mosul" — even as fighting with Islamic State militants continued in Mosul's Old City neighborhood where Iraqi forces are about 250 meters from the Tigris River and facing increasingly fierce resistance. |
Tesla responds, questioning IIHS motives after Model S fails to impress in crash test Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:45 AM PDT Tesla's class-leading Model S did not fail the most recent crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the electric sports sedan did not achieve a top rating in one particular test, the results of which were published late on Wednesday. The test results have caused a bit of a buzz, especially considering how well the Model S had performed in similar tests in the past. And the test in question is a crucial one, designed to judge a vehicle's performance in a front-end collision where the impact occurs on the driver side. Following the release of the test results, Tesla has issued a statement in response to concerns that its flagship sedan did not achieve top scores. The IIHS test in question is designed to assess a vehicle's performance when a collision occurs at the front driver-side corner of the car. The test, referred to by the IIHS as a "small overlap front crash test," simulates a typical impact with a tree or another vehicle. Tesla's Model S achieved the highest possible rating in each of the IIHS's tests aside from the small overlap front crash test, where the sports sedan only managed an "acceptable" rating. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Continental, Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Avalon all received the highest overall rating in the test. Here's a video showing a Model S crash test similar to the one conducted by the IIHS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uecPZvDPQgg According to Reuters, the IIHS determined that the Model S's seat belt and air bags were not effective in the test, and they could fail to prevent the driver's head from striking the steering wheel. In response to the claims made by the IIHS following its most recent round of testing, Tesla issued a statement. "IIHS and dozens of other private industry groups around the world have methods and motivations that suit their own subjective purposes," a Tesla spokesperson said. "The most objective and accurate independent testing of vehicle safety is currently done by the U.S. Government which found Model S and Model X to be the two cars with the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, making them the safest cars in history." Tesla shares slid more than 7% to close at $327.09 on Wednesday. The stock continued to fall during the after-hours session, and was down nearly 3% to $317.50 at the time of this writing. |
Blood in the Water: Drone Video Films Whale-Hunting Orcas Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:15 PM PDT A pod of orcas recently pursued and killed a minke whale off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, and a member of a marine expedition captured the bloody scene on video from above, using a drone. Researchers with the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP) spotted the whale-hunting orcas while on a scientific expedition in Avacha Gulf, southeast of Kamchatka. The scientists spied a group of orcas in pursuit of a minke whale — an unusual sight, because orcas that hunt mammals are few in number and are rarely glimpsed in that region, according to the researchers. |
