IS frees hundreds of 'human shields' in Syria Posted: 13 Aug 2016 03:27 PM PDT Islamic State group jihadists have released hundreds of civilians they used as human shields while fleeing a crumbling stronghold in northern Syria, but the fate of others remained unknown Saturday. On another front, scores of civilians were killed on Saturday in air raids by the Syrian regime and its Russian ally, and in shelling attacks by the rebels in the battleground province of Aleppo, a monitoring group said. At least 51 civilians including four children were killed in Aleppo city and the surrounding countryside, while another 22 civilians were killed in the neighbouring province of Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. |
Trump backs off ISIS comments; party head appears at rallies in show of unity Posted: 13 Aug 2016 12:57 PM PDT By Steve Holland ALTOONA, Pa. (Reuters) - Republican Donald Trump on Friday backed away from comments calling President Barack Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton the founders of the militant group Islamic State, while the Republican Party sought to project unity behind their candidate. A new poll showed Trump, whose unfiltered speaking style has repeatedly landed him in hot water, losing ground in three crucial states ahead of the Nov. 8 general election against Clinton. In a surprise appearance, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who in private expressed fury over some of Trump's actions earlier this month, introduced the candidate at a campaign event in Erie, Pennsylvania, and the two hugged onstage. |
U.S. drone kills Islamic State leader for Afghanistan, Pakistan: officials Posted: 13 Aug 2016 10:38 AM PDT By Jibran Ahmad and Yeganeh Torbati PESHAWAR, Pakistan/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The leader of Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan was killed in a U.S. drone strike on July 26, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday after the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan announced the news to Reuters. The death of Hafiz Saeed Khan is a blow to efforts by Islamic State - also known as ISIS or Daesh - to expand from its heartlands in Syria and Iraq into Afghanistan and Pakistan, already crowded with jihadist movements including the Taliban and al Qaeda. |

IS threat lingers in Afghanistan despite leader's death Posted: 13 Aug 2016 10:21 AM PDT The killing of the Islamic State group's leader in Afghanistan and Pakistan has dealt a major blow to the jihadists, but despite a US-backed scorched earth offensive the regional franchise is far from over, observers said Saturday. Hafiz Saeed was killed in a US airstrike in eastern Nangarhar province last month, the Pentagon announced Friday, as Afghan forces mount an operation against the militants after they claimed the deadliest attack in Kabul for 15 years. The death of Saeed, the second prominent militant to be killed in a US regional strike in recent months, is a setback to the group's efforts to expand beyond its heartland of Syria and Iraq into Afghanistan and Pakistan. |

Merkel to urge chiefs of big companies to hire refugees, Bild reports Posted: 13 Aug 2016 04:27 AM PDT Chancellor Angela Merkel has invited executives from some of Germany's biggest listed companies to attend a summit next month where she will urge them to hire more refugees, the newspaper Bild reported on Saturday. More than one million migrants flooded into Germany last year, and the government wants to get as many as possible into the job market, which would reduce their dependence on the state and compensate for labor shortages as the workforce ages. Merkel will push reluctant German companies to offer more traineeships and position to refugees, Bild reported. |

Suspect in Saudi police murder was IS member, says ministry Posted: 12 Aug 2016 05:33 PM PDT A Yemeni man accused of murdering a policeman in Saudi Arabia had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, authorities in the kingdom said. The suspect ran over and stabbed Corporal Muthhel al-Saluli on Wednesday after the officer left a mosque in Bisha, in the southwestern Asir region, the interior ministry said in a statement late on Friday. Saudi Arabia is part of the US-led coalition that is fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. |
