One-third of Turkey's 350 or so generals are now in custody, nearly 20 percent of all judges and prosecutors suspended, and even 30 out of 81 provincial governors have been detained. For President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it's a moment that goes to the heart of the Turkey he is building, and now – taking advantage of what he believes to be a democratic, post-coup mandate – is tapping to further reshape the nation such that his increasingly authoritarian, Islamist brand of rule faces no challenge.

Appearing in London with his US counterpart John Kerry to reaffirm the value of the trans-Atlantic "special relationship" in the wake of the Brexit vote, Johnson faced tough questioning. Why had he dismissed US President Barack Obama's concerns about Britain's EU membership referendum as the prejudices of a "half-Kenyan" anti-imperialist?

Why Nice attack is being met with anger, not unity, from French public

Posted: 19 Jul 2016 09:23 AM PDT

In the aftermath of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks across Paris, the French public – normally known for their disdain for authority – stood in unity with their president, François Hollande, who saw his support surge to its highest levels in three years. Monday's gathering was not only a public memorial to the 84 people killed and more than 200 others wounded when Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel bulldozed a 19-ton truck through celebrating crowds, but an answer to the government's call to remain unified and cohesive in increasingly worrying times. We Won't Ever Stop Terrorism, but Let's Be Honest About How to Reduce ItSunday's shooting of three Baton Rouge police officers is just the latest in a series of mass murders that have riveted the nation and triggered a debate riddled with simplistic policy proposals. Neither liberal solutions like gun control nor conservative proposals like tightening our borders and escalating the war against ISIS will end these attacks. The partisan debate not only offers proposals that are less effective than promised, but it also draws public attention away from a major driver of U.S. mass casualty attacks: America's adventurous foreign policy.

After Nice attack, French Muslims feel fear and alienation

Posted: 19 Jul 2016 02:10 AM PDT

By Richard Lough and Sophie Sassard NICE, France (Reuters) - In the poor Nice suburb of Ariane, many Muslims feel their community is being unfairly blamed for the Bastille Day attack that killed 84 people, and fear discrimination and social divisions will grow in its wake. Islamic State claimed the attack and hailed Tunisian-born Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who drove a truck through a crowd of revelers on the French city's sea-front promenade last Thursday, as one if its soldiers. The Paris prosecutor said on Monday that, while there was no evidence that he had direct links to Islamic State, he had recently developed an interest in radical Islam.
