UK regulators search Cambridge Analytica offices Posted: 23 Mar 2018 06:05 PM PDT British regulators on Friday began searching the London offices of Cambridge Analytica (CA), the scandal-hit communications firm at the heart of the Facebook data scandal, shortly after a judge approved a search warrant. Around 18 enforcement agents from the office of Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham entered the company's London headquarters at around 8:00pm (2000 GMT) to execute the warrant. The High Court granted the raid request less than an hour earlier, as Denham investigates claims that Cambridge Analytica may have illegally harvested Facebook data for political ends. |
Trolley cars abandoned in graveyard Posted: 25 Mar 2018 08:26 AM PDT Tucked away in these spooky woodlands, one man has amassed a huge collection of decaying trolley cars. Once a novel mode of public transport in the likes early 20th Century New York, the hauntingly beautiful trolleys are now at one with nature – a scene that abandoned location photographer Matthew Christopher was able to discover in a location not disclosed to the public. Matthew, of Abandoned America, has shot the roughly 40 trolleys at various stages throughout the years – his images ranging from those that still have their original paint jobs to rusted vehicles covered in graffiti. |

US students armed with buckets of rocks in defence against mass shootings Posted: 24 Mar 2018 09:44 AM PDT As tens of thousands of Americans march for tighter gun control laws, a Pennsylvania school district has turned to arming students with rocks as a "last line of defence" against mass shootings. The Blue Mountain School District in Schuylkill County has equipped 200 of its classrooms with buckets of river rocks in the event of a mass shooting. District superintendent David Helsel revealed the novel plan in a committee hearing on school safety on 15 March following last month's shooting at a Florida high school where 17 people were killed. "Every classroom has been equipped with a five-gallon bucket full of river stone," Mr Helsel told the hearing. "If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance into any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks and they will be stoned. "We have some people who have some pretty good arms. They can chuck some rocks pretty fast." Mr Helsel explained the river stones were his idea and were placed in classrooms two years ago having initially considered using golf balls. "We chose to make it well known about the river stone because if it's an existing student [they will] be aware that the chances are they're going to be stoned severely if they try to do anything," he added. "We didn't want our students to be helpless victims," he later told Reuters. "River stones were my idea. I thought they would be more effective than throwing books or book bags or staplers." Mass shootings have become more frequent in the US Student survivors of the Florida school massacre attended a massive rally against gun violence Saturday in Washington, D.C. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students will be required to use clear backpacks when then return to school after spring as part of new security measures to prevent another mass shooting. |

A team of three officials will be led by Ri Son Gwon, the chairman of North Korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country, the North told its neighbor early on Saturday, the South's Unification Ministry said. "This morning, North Korea sent a message through a communication channel in Panmunjom agreeing to our suggestion made on the 22nd to hold high-level inter-Korea talks," the ministry said in a statement. |

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 05:30 PM PDT Hollywood celebrities lent their presence and political heft to the March for Our Lives gun control movement, and helped to rally Americans in a day of nationwide protest, by both donating large sums of money, as well as by showing up to march, speak and perform. At Saturday's march in Los Angeles, comedienne Amy Schumer, a showing of whose film Trainwreck was the scene of a 2015 shooting in a Louisiana theatre, spoke passionately against gun violence and the National Rifle Association (NRA) lobbying group at a gathering said to be 50,000-strong. Schumer, a cousin of Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, also addressed the politicians who've taken money from the NRA. |

Mount Etna slowly 'sliding towards the Mediterranean Sea' Posted: 24 Mar 2018 08:20 AM PDT Mount Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano, is slowly sliding towards the Mediterranean Sea, scientists have observed. The entire 3,350m (11,000ft) stratovolcano, located on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily, is currently moving downslope at an average rate of 14 mm per year - or 1.4 metres over 100 years. Experts have warned the sliding could eventually lead to greater risk of large scale slope failure, which could trigger landslides, however researchers at The Open University emphasised there is currently no sign of that happening. Dr John Murray, lead author of the paper published in the Bulletin of Volcanology, stressed the minute movement currently posed no danger to life, but warned that monitoring the volcano for more significant changes was crucial. "At the moment there is no cause for concern from the sliding of the volcano towards the sea, the movement is just too small," Dr Murray told The Telegraph. "However, the possibility of things changing in the future needs to be taken seriously, so it is important to keep monitoring the movement." At a glance | Deadliest volcanic eruptions The UK-led team, who monitored the changes using GPS technology placed around the mountain, found the sliding is lubricated by the weak sediments beneath Etna and the slope of the basement. Dr Murray, who has been working for 49 years studying the active volcanoes of Mount Etna, said if a sector collapse were to occur, the results could be "catastrophic". "Around one million people live on Etna and its immediate surroundings, so the destruction of property and loss of life could be catastrophic; but I cannot emphasise enough that there is no sign of this happening at the present time," he explained. "Clearly even the mention of such a dangerous event would be very unnerving for the people who live on Etna, so I am anxious that they don't get the wrong impression." At a glance | Where are the world's most famous volcanoes? It is the first time basement sliding of an entire active volcano has been directly observed, with the team suggesting that similar edging may be taking place at other active volcanoes such as Mexico's Volcán de Colima and Mount Teide in Tenerife. Dr Murray said he did not expect the rate of movement to increase, but added: "I regard it as essential to keep measuring our stations, and will be on the lookout for any kind of change in rate of downslope sliding." |
FBI seeks motive for fiery van crash at California air base Posted: 23 Mar 2018 06:33 PM PDT ROSEVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Investigators said Friday that they are stumped as to why a man who emigrated 25 years ago from India drove a flaming minivan full of propane tanks and gasoline cans through the main gate of a major Northern California Air Force Base this week, but see no evidence of terrorism. |
Russia denies aiding Afghan Taliban in wake of U.S. general's comments Posted: 24 Mar 2018 11:46 PM PDT Russia has rejected comments by NATO's top commander in Afghanistan that it has been supporting and even supplying weapons to the Taliban, in a clash of words that underlines growing tension over Moscow's involvement in the conflict. In an interview with the BBC last week, General John Nicholson said that Russia had been acting to undermine U.S. efforts in Afghanistan despite shared interests in fighting terrorism and narcotics, with indications that Moscow was providing financial support and even arms. "We've had weapons brought to this headquarters and given to us by Afghan leaders and said this was given by the Russians to the Taliban," he said. |

Quick victory unlikely in Egypt assault on IS: analysts Posted: 23 Mar 2018 07:55 PM PDT Egypt's military is conducting a sweeping assault to crush a resilient Islamic State branch in Sinai, but the jihadist group is unlikely to be vanquished quickly, analysts say. The operation was launched on February 9 after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is expected to sweep to a second term in polls next week, gave the armed forces and police a three-month deadline in November to wipe out the jihadists. The military gives regular updates on the operation, saying it has killed more than 100 jihadists so far while losing at least 20 troops. |

The Belarusian opposition is marking the 100th anniversary of the short-lived Belarusian People's Republic of 1918-19 that it sees as the foundation of an independent Belarus. About 20 officials, wearing black jackets with "ICO Enforcement" on them, arrived at the firm's central London offices on Friday evening soon after a High Court judge granted a search warrant sought by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). As Syrian rebels quit Ghouta, Douma stands alone Posted: 24 Mar 2018 01:32 PM PDT Syrian rebels began pulling out of several towns in their former enclave of eastern Ghouta on Saturday, surrendering them to the government and leaving the besieged city of Douma as their last bastion there. It comes after a month-long assault that devastated the already battered eastern Ghouta, an area of farmland and towns that was one of the first centers of the uprising in 2011 and the last major rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus. Ten buses carrying fighters along with their families and other civilians started to leave the enclave after dark, the vanguard of a convoy heading into exile in northwestern Syria. |
