Putin warns on arming Syrian rebels as conflict widens Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:13 PM PDT By Alexei Anishchuk and Louis Charbonneau ST PETERSBURG, Russia/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned the West on Friday against arming Syrian rebel forces, which he said included "terrorist" groups, and warned that a swift exit by President Bashar al-Assad risked creating a dangerous power vacuum. "If the United States ... recognizes one of the key Syrian opposition organizations, al-Nusra, as terrorist ... how can one deliver arms to those opposition members?" Putin told a panel with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. ... |

Army: Freedom of Information Does Not Include Edward Snowden's Military File Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:10 AM PDT A Freedom of Information Act request from The Atlantic Wire for the military records of Edward Snowden was "withheld in its entirety" by the Department of the Army. Despite the public value of better understanding the NSA leaker's first stint as a government employee, the Army exercised a legal exemption allowing it to reserve information that could "reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings." Experts question that decision. |
U.S. arms makers emerging hopeful in face of budget cuts Posted: 21 Jun 2013 09:55 AM PDT By Andrea Shalal-Esa PARIS (Reuters) - The fallout of U.S. defense budget cuts was plain to see at this week's Paris Airshow in a range of scaled back displays that in the past were packed with a crowd-pleasing array of U.S. military hardware. Lockheed Martin Corp , whose F-35 radar-evading jet is the biggest weapons program ever, conspicuously left the mockup of the fighter which normally graces Europe's premier industry meeting at home in favor of a billboard picture. ... |
Special Report: Deepening ethnic rifts reshape Syria's towns Posted: 21 Jun 2013 08:33 AM PDT By Alexander Dziadosz and Oliver Holmes IDLIB PROVINCE, Syria (Reuters) - The villages that dot the valleys and terraced hills of Syria's northwest used to epitomize the country's diversity. Each one was dominated by a different religion or sect. The settlements coexisted - sometimes peacefully, sometimes less so - for centuries, a patchwork of distinct but interwoven communities that, for many Syrians, was central to the nation's identity. Over the past two years, that order has fallen apart. ... |
Thousands of Shi'ites ready to fight in Syria, Iraqi says Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:45 AM PDT By Samia Nakhoul and Suadad al-Salhy BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from Iraq and beyond will take up arms against Sunni al Qaeda "savages" in Syria if fellow Shi'ites or their shrines come under attack again, a powerful minister in Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said. It would be impossible to "sit idle while the Shi'ites are being attacked", while the United States and Western allies arm and finance the mainly Sunni rebels fighting against Syria's government, Hadi al-Amiri told Reuters in an interview. ... |
Iranian expectations soar after Rohani's election Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:45 AM PDT As Iranians erupted in celebration over the victory of Hassan Rohani, they knew what they wanted from their president-elect: more social freedoms, a better economy, and less "resistance" to the rest of the world. |
Book Talk: The dark doubts in the heart of a Mormon missionary Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:17 AM PDT By Elaine Lies TOKYO (Reuters) - They're a familiar sight around the world, whether in northern Japan or southern Argentina: a pair of men in dark suits, with nameplates, often riding bicycles as they go about their job preaching the Mormon religion. "Elders", Ryan McIlvain's debut novel, illuminates the lives of one such pair, American Elder McLeod and his Brazilian counterpart Elder Passos, through their frustrating daily round of knocking on doors and missionary work, the service that all adult Mormons must perform. ... |

Turkey faces pressure to advance Kurdish militant peace process Posted: 21 Jun 2013 04:27 AM PDT By Daren Butler ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party is pressing Ankara to advance a peace process with Kurdish militants before a parliament recess, drawing a government accusation on Friday that it was exploiting unrelated unrest to extract concessions. Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters began pulling out of Turkish territory to bases in northern Iraq last month under a deal between the state and the group's jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan to end a conflict which has killed 40,000. ... |

After two years of fighting that has killed more than 93,000 people, Syria's turmoil is dragging its neighbors into a deadly confrontation between Shi'ite Iran supporting President Bashar al-Assad and Sunni Arab Gulf nations backing the Syrian rebels. ... |
