The poignantly silent rallies paid tribute to the 17 victims of the three-day killing spree, and came as security forces were mapping out a major deployment aimed at preventing fresh violence. World leaders including British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were set to attend Sunday's march in support of France, badly shaken by the violence. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and the king and queen of Jordan are also among those set to take part.

In this Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 photo, an Egyptian Muslim pauses inside Ibn-Tulun Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Cairo, Egypt. Amid violence like the attack in Paris on a satirical newspaper over its depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, there's been increasing discussions among Muslims who say their community must re-examine their faith to modernize its interpretations and sideline extremists. There is a growing debate within Islam about whether and how to reject a radical minority that some fear is dragging them into conflict and wrecking the faith. (AP Photo/Mosa'ab Ehsamy)CAIRO (AP) — After gunmen in Paris killed 12 people, Saudi Arabia's top body of Muslim clerics quickly condemned the attack and said it could have no acceptable justification. It was a signal from some of the Islamic world's strictest voices that cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were not a reason to kill the artists.

Though it is impossible to gauge in any tangible way the effect the deadly attack on a Paris newspaper will have on recruitment by extremist groups - and there is no evidence so far that it is mobilizing large numbers of would-be jihadis - experts believe the perceived professionalism of the brothers' assault and their subsequent showdown with police could rally more supporters to militant ranks. (AP Photo/Jordi Mir, File) NO SALESBEIRUT (AP) — The militant chatter spread like wildfire. Reports earlier this week suggested Tuesday's attack was carried out by a Russian woman from the Muslim Caucasus region of Dagestan, and not the female bomber that the far-left militant group initially said had executed the strike. "The attack on January 6 in Sultanahmet... was not carried out by our organisation," the Marxist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party–Front (DHKP-C) said in a statement on its website. Doubts were first raised when the mother of the suicide bomber named by the DHKP-C -- Elif Sultan Kalsen -- was taken to identify the corpse and said it was not her daughter.

Egypt's military has launched a widespread offensive against jihadist groups in the Sinai PeninsulaTwo headless bodies were found in a village in Egypt's restive North Sinai region on Saturday, police said, the latest in a series of beheadings allegedly carried out by jihadists. Egypt's deadliest jihadist organisation, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has previously claimed several beheadings of men it said were working for the Egyptian army or Israel's Mossad spy agency. The Sinai-based group, which last year pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, has regularly released video footage showing the executions of alleged informants, often by beheading. Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) has targeted Egyptian security forces since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
