France hunts suspect, prepares for mass anti-terrorism rally Posted: 10 Jan 2015 04:20 PM PST PARIS (AP) — France vowed to combat terrorism with "a cry for freedom" in a giant rally for unity Sunday after three days of bloodshed that horrified the world. Police searched for a woman linked to the three al-Qaida-inspired attackers, but a Turkish official said she appears to have already slipped into Syria. |
French rally for attack victims on eve of Paris march of 'millions' Posted: 10 Jan 2015 03:51 PM PST More than 700,000 people poured onto the streets of France Saturday in solidarity with victims of this week's Islamist attacks, on the eve of a march in Paris expected to dwarf that figure. The poignantly silent rallies paid tribute to the 17 victims of the three-day killing spree, and came as security forces were mapping out a major deployment aimed at preventing fresh violence. World leaders including British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were set to attend Sunday's march in support of France, badly shaken by the violence. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and the king and queen of Jordan are also among those set to take part. |

France Declares Its Own 'War on Terror' Posted: 10 Jan 2015 03:08 PM PST Amid tight security, thousands marched in Paris on Saturday in commemoration of the 17 victims of two separate terrorist attacks that rocked France this week: Wednesday's massacre of 12 in and near the office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, and Friday's siege of a Jewish grocery store that resulted in five more deaths. Appearing on Saturday in the town of Évry, south of Paris, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls told his people to expect war. |

Violence fuels debate among Muslims over interpreting faith Posted: 10 Jan 2015 11:18 AM PST CAIRO (AP) — After gunmen in Paris killed 12 people, Saudi Arabia's top body of Muslim clerics quickly condemned the attack and said it could have no acceptable justification. It was a signal from some of the Islamic world's strictest voices that cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were not a reason to kill the artists. |

Why France Failed to Prevent the Charlie Hebdo Massacre Posted: 10 Jan 2015 09:09 AM PST The attacks that rocked Paris over the past several days revealed how lax the French law enforcement apparatus was prior to the attacks. The three men involved in the attacks were all well-known to the ... |
UN to host Libya peace talks in Geneva next week Posted: 10 Jan 2015 08:22 AM PST The United Nations announced Saturday a new round of peace talks in Geneva next week between Libya's warring factions, as the European Union warned the country was at a "crucial juncture". It came as fighting between troops and Islamist militia killed 13 people in eastern Libya. "This dialogue is an important opportunity for the Libyans to restore stability and prevent the country's slide towards deeper conflict and economic collapse that should not be missed," the UN mission in Libya said. UN envoy Bernardino Leon has proposed a freeze in military operations for a few days "in order to create a conducive environment for the dialogue," the UN statement said. |

Turkish Marxist group withdraws claim for Istanbul attack Posted: 10 Jan 2015 06:31 AM PST A banned radical Turkish Marxist group retracted its claim for a suicide bombing in the heart of Istanbul's tourist district, raising Saturday the possibility of a jihadist link to the attack that left one policeman and the bomber dead. Reports earlier this week suggested Tuesday's attack was carried out by a Russian woman from the Muslim Caucasus region of Dagestan, and not the female bomber that the far-left militant group initially said had executed the strike. "The attack on January 6 in Sultanahmet... was not carried out by our organisation," the Marxist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party–Front (DHKP-C) said in a statement on its website. Doubts were first raised when the mother of the suicide bomber named by the DHKP-C -- Elif Sultan Kalsen -- was taken to identify the corpse and said it was not her daughter. |
U.S.-led air strikes focus on Kobani, Syria: U.S. military Posted: 10 Jan 2015 06:22 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American-led forces launched 12 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria since Friday, all but one of them near the contested city of Kobani, the U.S. military said. The strikes near Kobani hit two large Islamic State units and destroyed 15 of its fighting positions, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement Saturday. They also destroyed an Islamic State building and one tactical unit, it said. Another strike in Syria, near al Hasakah, destroyed two Islamic State guard facilities, the statement said. U.S. ... |
Bomb found outside Istanbul shopping centre Posted: 10 Jan 2015 05:18 AM PST Turkish police on Saturday defused a bomb outside a shopping centre in Istanbul, with the city on a high security alert following a suicide bombing earlier this week. The homemade device was found in a suspect package in front of a shopping centre in the western suburb of Basaksehir after a passer-by raised the alarm, the official Anatolia news agency reported. In another security alert Saturday, police detonated in controlled explosion gas cannisters that had been found in a suspicious package in the suburb of Sefakoy, Anatolia said. The female suicide bomber and a policeman were killed in Tuesday's bombing in the Sultanahmet district, the location of most of the biggest historic tourist attractions in Istanbul. |
2 headless bodies found in Egypt's Sinai Posted: 10 Jan 2015 05:11 AM PST Two headless bodies were found in a village in Egypt's restive North Sinai region on Saturday, police said, the latest in a series of beheadings allegedly carried out by jihadists. Egypt's deadliest jihadist organisation, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has previously claimed several beheadings of men it said were working for the Egyptian army or Israel's Mossad spy agency. The Sinai-based group, which last year pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, has regularly released video footage showing the executions of alleged informants, often by beheading. Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) has targeted Egyptian security forces since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. |
