The air strikes hit or destroyed tactical units, tunnels, buildings and weaponry in six Iraqi cities, with the most strikes - six - centered on Ramadi, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement Sunday. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed Friday's attack in the Ain Defla region in a statement posted on a social media account that often releases its communiques. A security source on Saturday had said 11 soldiers were killed. |

Islamic State claims attack that kills five members of Egypt's security forces Posted: 19 Jul 2015 02:09 AM PDT Islamic State's Egypt affiliate said in a statement on a social media site it carried out an attack in North Sinai on military checkpoints that killed five members of the country's security forces on Saturday. North Sinai is the epicentre of an insurgency waged by militants who support Islamic State, the ultra-hardline Sunni group which controls large parts of Iraq and Syria and has a presence in Egypt's neighbour Libya. Egypt's state news agency MENA said the attack by terrorists -- the term the government uses to describe militants -- involved rockets and shooting and that clashes were continuing. |
Islamic State claims kidnapping of three African Christians in Libya Posted: 19 Jul 2015 12:49 AM PDT Islamic State has kidnapped three African Christians in eastern Libya, the group said, publishing their passport pictures. The kidnapping took place in Noufliyah, an Islamic State stronghold southeast of the city of Sirte, said a resident, asking not to be named. Mohamed El Hejazi, a military spokesman loyal to the internationally recognised government based in the east, also said the abduction happened in the small town. |
