Sandy Hook families’ law firm to NBC: Don’t air Megyn Kelly’s Alex Jones interview Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:36 AM PDT A letter to NBC from the families of Sandy Hook victims urged the network to considering the "ethical and legal ramifications" of airing Megyn Kelly's interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Obtained by Politico's Hadas Gold, the letter from a law firm representing several families who lost loved ones in the 2012 Newtown, Conn., attack implies that by airing the controversial interview, NBC would open itself up to possible legal action. "We urge you to consider the ethical and legal ramifications of broadcasting this interview to millions of Americans," the letter read. |

Boeing, Airbus take dogfight to Paris Air Show Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:53 PM PDT The aircraft industry descends on Paris Monday for the world's biggest airshow, a prime battleground for bitter rivals Boeing and Airbus, but also a chance for new kids on the block to snap at the heels of the two giants. Single-aisle planes for short and medium distances are the hottest ticket in the world's civil aviation industry, with airline demand for models in the Airbus A320 family giving the European company an edge, for now, over its American opponent which is racing to return in force to the mid-range segment. Boeing, meanwhile, is to showcase the 737 Max 9 model as its anti-Airbus weapon in a market segment where the capacity to squeeze a few more seats into a narrow-body cabin while eking out increased fuel efficiency over greater ranges is key. |

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 10:05 AM PDT Amazon announced on Friday morning that it's buying Whole Foods for just under $14 billion, the retailer's largest acquisition ever. The purchase holds implications for the future of groceries, the entire food industry, and—as hyperbolic as this might sound—the future of shopping for just about anything. |

US moves to seize another $540 mn in Malaysia's 1MDB scandal Posted: 15 Jun 2017 11:24 PM PDT The US has acted to seize another $540 million in assets, including a luxury yacht, allegedly bought with money stolen from Malaysia's multibillion-dollar 1MDB fund, a move Kuala Lumpur slammed on Friday as headline-seeking. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is battling allegations that huge sums were looted from the state fund he founded, in complex overseas deals that are being investigated by authorities in several countries. The latest move by US federal prosecutors compounds court cases launched last year in which Washington sought to confiscate more than $1 billion allegedly embezzled by businessmen with political connections in Malaysia -- bringing the total amount US officials say was stolen to $4.5 billion. |
Two-Headed Conjoined Porpoises Hauled Up from the Deep Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:53 AM PDT Two-headed conjoined porpoises were recently hauled up by a fishing boat in the North Sea, not far off the coast of the Netherlands. It's not clear exactly why the porpoises died, but the double-headed creatures likely could not swim, said Erwin Kompanje, a researcher at the Natural History Museum and the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who recently wrote up the case in the June 7 issue of the journal Deinsea. Conjoined twins are a rarity for humans, but they're also extremely rare for harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), Kompanje said. |
Seven US soldiers wounded in Afghan 'insider attack' Posted: 17 Jun 2017 08:47 AM PDT Mazar-i-Sharif (Afghanistan) (AFP) - Seven American troops were wounded Saturday in an insider attack by an Afghan soldier at a military base, as the US appears set to boost its troop presence in the country. The shootout at Camp Shaheen near northern Mazar-i-Sharif city is the second "green-on-blue" attack -- where Afghan soldiers turn their weapons on international forces assisting them -- reported this week. |

Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $13.7 billion Posted: 16 Jun 2017 06:30 AM PDT You know how Jeff Bezos is looking for new ideas related to philanthropy? Well, he might be a bit too busy to read everyone's suggestions for the next few days since Amazon just announced a deal to acquire Whole Foods for close to $14 billion. It's a surprising business move that has undoubtedly been in the works for quite some time, but it was just announced on Friday.
Under the terms of the deal, which is pending regulatory approval, Amazon will pay $42 per share to acquire Whole Foods in an all-cash transaction that's valued at $13.7 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of the year. Why is Amazon buying the massive grocery chain? Probably for the great food, considering the quote Bezos gave:
As part of the deal, Whole Foods co-founder and CEO John Mackey will stay on the job, and the company will continue to operate stores under the Whole Foods Market brand. The company's headquarters will stay in Austin, Texas, the press release says — and you can see the entire press release at this link. It's unclear at this time whether Amazon Prime subscribers will get anything out of the deal, and whether Whole Foods products will also be available via Amazon once the deal is finalized. |

Amazon to buy Whole Foods Market for $13.7 bn Posted: 16 Jun 2017 06:43 AM PDT Amazon will acquire upscale US grocer Whole Foods Market, known for its pricey organic options, for $13.7 billion, the companies announced Friday, in a deal that underscores the online retailer's growing influence. Under the all-cash deal, Amazon will acquire the Texas-based champion of organic and specialty food for $42 a share. Whole Foods, which has faced pressure from activist investors, will continue to operate stores under its brand and will be led by co-founder and chief executive John Mackey, the companies said. |

The Lexus CT200h gets sportier for 2018 Posted: 16 Jun 2017 01:53 AM PDT Lexus has given the CT, its only current hatchback model, what could be its final ever refresh. New Quantum-Entanglement Record Could Spur Hack-Proof Communications Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:12 AM PDT A Chinese satellite has split pairs of "entangled photons" and transmitted them to separate ground stations 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) apart, smashing the previous distance record for such a feat and opening new possibilities in quantum communication. In quantum physics, when particles interact with each other in certain ways they become "entangled." This essentially means they remain connected even when separated by large distances, so that an action performed on one affects the other. In a new study published online today (June 15) in the journal Science, researchers report the successful distribution of entangled photon pairs to two locations on Earth separated by 747.5 miles (1,203 km). |

US student suffered 'extensive' brain damage in N. Korea Posted: 15 Jun 2017 06:39 PM PDT Doctors treating Otto Warmbier, the US student released by North Korea in a coma this week, said Thursday the 22-year-old had suffered severe brain damage, as his father lashed out at the reclusive regime. Warmbier experienced extensive tissue loss in all regions of the brain, doctors said, but he showed no signs of physical trauma and medical tests offered no conclusive evidence as to the cause of his neurological injuries. |

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 10:29 AM PDT President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will be tightening regulations on Cuba in order to help the Cuban people, calling former President Barack Obama's deal to thaw relations with the country's government "terrible". "We will not be silenced in the face of communist oppression any longer", Mr Trump said in front of an excited crowd in the Little Havana neighbourhood of Miami, Florida. The President pledged to help the people of Cuba, and to ensure that American money spent in Cuba will go to the Cuban people instead of the Cuban government. |
