Laser scans will preserve world heritage sites in digital format forever

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 11:11 AM PST

Laser scans will preserve world heritage sites in digital format foreverIt's the ultimate in the juxtaposition of eras — modern-day technology is now saving centuries-old world heritage sites through digital documentation. Non-profit organization CyArk, which has already successfully preserved "scores of the world's most famous cultural sites," is now partnering with the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) to laser scan "dozens of at-risk sites in Syria, Iraq, and the Middle East." Over the next five years, CyArk hopes to virtually preserve 500 of these heritage sites, allowing them to live in perpetuity online, if not in real life. Employing the use of such technologies as 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, and traditional survey, the reality-capture project is an ambitious one to be sure. But as an increasing number of historical landmarks fall victim to the passage of time, or to violence, historians are becoming increasingly aware of the need to find some way to extend the lifetime of these important facets of human history. In their laser scanning, CyArk effectively creates a digital replica of a structure, which is then analyzed by a range of software programs. And while it's difficult to manipulate brick and mortar, preservationists and historians can dig a bit deeper into these digital versions, potentially discovering even more about their origins, associated cultures, and civilization. Related:  The Asus ZenFone 2 Laser offers high-end specs on a budget "The digital technology exists to preserve measurable 3D models of these historical sites before they are damaged or destroyed," said Ben Kacyra, president and co-founder of CyArk. Gustavo Araoz, president, ICOMOS and chair of the CyArk 500 Advisory Council, seconded this sentiment, noting, "CyArk's summit provides a critical forum for discussions on progress and issues facing the global preservation and conservation movement." Calling the latest efforts by the nonprofit "a long-term and evolving effort to ensure we secure and share our collective history," this digitization of our history certainly has significant and widespread support from a variety of sources. Of course, these preservations are no small undertaking. According to a CyArk press release, "It takes about 10,000 gigabytes of data, or the equivalent of 200 trucks of paper, to digitally preserve each site." But a number of companies are helping to address this demand in hopes of creating a "museum of the future," in which visitors may be able to see all the world's most incredible places in a single location. After all, just because we're moving forward doesn't mean we can't look back. Also watch: Raimond de Hullu's vision for Oas1s green buildings Please enable Javascript to watch this video

For veterans on death row, question of whether war trauma matters

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 09:07 AM PST

Nearly 300 former soldiers, many of them combat veterans who fought from Southeast Asia to Afghanistan, sit on death rows across the United States – nearly 10 percent of the US death row population, according to a new study. Legal rulings have tended to dismiss the connection between battle trauma and home front violence – even amid an 89 percent rise in homicides by veterans following the invasion of Afghanistan, compared with a six-year period before 9/11, the report states. Soldiers who kill civilians at home are seen as a troubling contradiction to the traditionally valorous picture of returning soldiers, says Richard Dieter, author of the report by the Death Penalty Information Center, an anti-death penalty advocacy group.

With Ramadi encircled, Iraqi forces brace for urban warfare

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 08:33 AM PST

A military vehicle of the Iraqi security forces is pictured near the University of Anbar, in Anbar provinceBy Ahmed Rasheed and Stephen Kalin BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces appear better positioned than ever to launch an offensive against Islamic State militants controlling Ramadi, now that months-long efforts to cut off supply lines to the city are having an effect, but plenty of risks remain. The fall of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, to the group in May was the biggest defeat for Iraq's weak central government in nearly a year, dampening its hopes of routing the Sunni militants from the country's north and west. Retaking the city of 450,000 would provide a major psychological boost to Iraqi security forces, who have mostly collapsed in the face of advances by Islamic State, which last year seized a third of Iraq, a major OPEC oil producer and U.S ally.

Ben Carson Emerges From Fourth GOP Debate Unscathed

Rocked by news reports that questioned aspects of his life story, along with urgent damage control by his surrogates and his irritation at scrutiny of the up-from-poverty narrative central to his appeal, Dr. Ben Carson's curious, front-running presidential campaign seemed to have smoke billowing from under the hood. That created an interesting question heading into Tuesday's Wisconsin debate: Would Carson's opponents in the fourth of the GOP's demolition-derby debate series try to side-swipe his wobbling campaign? Or would Carson make a tactical change, take his campaign out of slow-and-steady mode and hit them first?
