A member of the Iraqi special forces' Counter-Terrorism Service stands guard next to a damaged building at Mosul's university on January 15, 2017Some buildings at the University of Mosul are charred by fires, others rigged with explosives, and bullets still periodically fly past a campus scarred by the battle for the city. The sound of a jet, the whoosh of a descending missile and the explosion as it hits home mark an air strike nearby that sends a stream of black smoke rising toward the grey clouds blanketing the sky over Mosul. Iraq's elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) has retaken the university from IS, officers said, but the danger posed by the jihadists here is far from over.

Are terrorists crossing the US-Mexico border? Excerpts from the case file

Posted: 15 Jan 2017 04:51 AM PST

For the past eight years there has been a running debate between conservatives and liberals over the potential threat of terrorists using the US-Mexico border to enter or attack America. Although there have been no terror attacks in the American homeland linked to the US-Mexico border, the threat of terrorists using the border to gain access to the US is not merely hypothetical. What follows are 10 examples from criminal cases that highlight the issue of terrorism and the US-Mexico border.

Terror and the Mexico border: How big a threat?

Islamic militants purchase a nuclear device from a sympathetic official in Pakistan and ship the weapon on the flip side of a drug trafficking route through West Africa to South America. Next, the package is smuggled north to the United States-Mexico border. "From there it's just a quick hop through a smuggling tunnel and … presto, they're mingling with another 12 million 'illegal' aliens in America with a nuclear bomb in the trunk of their car," the 2015 ISIS article says.

Iraqi Federal police take cover near the Tigris river during a battle with Islamic State militants in the district of Yarimja in southern MosulBy Isabel Coles MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - In some parts of Mosul, you can almost forget that a war is being waged over the city between Iraqi forces and Islamic State militants who still control more than half of it - at least momentarily. Cars clog the streets, stalls are heaped with fresh produce and bicycles weave through the traffic, as the city slowly emerges from more than two years under the iron grip of Islamic State. As Iraqi forces prise away more and more of the militants' largest urban stronghold, a semblance of normality is returning to eastern districts that were retaken in the early stages of a campaign that began nearly three months ago.

A Vietnamese man waves as the boat with US Secretary of State John Kerry aboard travels past him in the Mekong River Delta, on January 14, 2017Viet Cong veteran Vo Ban Tam remembers the first time he crossed paths with John Kerry on the banks on the Bay Hap river, a day that ended in bloodshed. Almost a half-century later, the now 70-year-old Mekong Delta shrimp farmer locked eyes with the US Secretary of State on Saturday and they warmly grasped hands in mutual respect. Kerry returned to the Vietnam waterway at the end of a visit to the Communist nation, less than a week before he was to leave office, searching for the spot where he won a Silver Star for bravery as a young US Navy lieutenant.
