British envoy's convoy ambushed in Libya, two wounded Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:29 AM PDT BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A convoy carrying Britain's ambassador to Libya was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade on Monday, injuring two of his bodyguards in the most serious of a spate of assaults on foreign targets. The attackers ambushed the ambassador's convoy metres (yards) from the consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, firing the weapon at the front of one of the vehicles and blowing out the windscreen, local security officials said. It was the fourth attack in three months on a foreign mission in the city, the birth-place of the revolt which last year overthrew Muammar Gaddafi. ... |

Bureaucracy clogs Libya's road to democracy Posted: 11 Jun 2012 10:24 AM PDT TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya's first national election in a generation was designed to heal the divisions laid bare by the revolt that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, but bureaucratic bottlenecks could derail the vote and push the country deeper into chaos. The July 7 election, for a 200-member national assembly which will draft a new constitution, offers Libya the chance to choose legitimate leaders capable of uniting the country for the first time since Gaddafi's downfall and death last year. ... |

Some analysts have blamed the attacks in the eastern city on Islamist militants exploiting the security vacuum left after Muammar Gaddafi's overthrow in an uprising last year. Resurrecting W.: Why George Bush Still Matters in 2012 Posted: 11 Jun 2012 04:26 AM PDT George W. Bush is gone from Washington -- and sometimes the city seems to have forgotten him. For all the passions that Bush inspired, the 43rd president's legacy has been absent from the 2012 campaign. Mitt Romney's dog and Barack Obama's college girlfriends feel like larger presences in this election season than the President who invaded Iraq, bailed out the banks and slashed taxes. Bush's legacy was strangely absent from the Republican primaries, his name almost never mentioned in countless debates. ... |
