A public funeral, international tribunal, and justice denied for Lebanon

Posted: 08 Jun 2016 02:21 PM PDT

The death last month of a top Hezbollah commander in Syria prompted proud eulogies from the party's leadership, satisfaction from his enemies – and, in a quiet suburb of The Hague, a legal quandary. For Mustafa Badreddine was not only a veteran Hezbollah commander who oversaw the party's military intervention in Syria. Although Badreddine was given a full public funeral and his body lies buried in Hezbollah's "martyrs" cemetery in southern Beirut, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) has concluded that his trial would continue.

US army personnel ride in a truck inside an Afghan military base during fighting between Taliban militants and Afghan security forces in Kunduz on October 1, 2015The United States underestimates the long-term impact of civilian deaths on its military missions and is failing to implement lessons learned from 15 grueling years in Afghanistan, a report released Wednesday found. While the US military frequently stresses it does all it can to prevent civilian casualties, the report said poorly planned air strikes, misidentified targets, unexploded ordinance and rogue partner troops have too often led to non-combatant deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. The study by Open Society Foundations, a charity created by US magnate and philanthropist George Soros, found that in Afghanistan, such deaths seriously undermined the mission and fueled the growth of the Taliban.

By Toby Sterling AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Tension between Russia and the West may be distracting them from cooperating to prevent an accidental nuclear confrontation or a dirty bomb attack by militants, nuclear policy experts said on Tuesday. Former U.S. Secretary of Defence William Perry said he regretted the current lack of communication between the United States and Russia, which went into a deep freeze after Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. Anatoly Adamishin, a former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, argued that the U.S. has focused on a policy of "strangling Russia" and hoping for the departure of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has the effect of putting Russia at the forefront of a list of U.S. enemies.

A man walks on the rubble of damaged buildings in the rebel-controlled area of Jobar, a suburb of DamascusBy Alex Whiting LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The world has become increasingly violent with deaths from conflict at a 25-year high, terrorist attacks at an all-time high and more people displaced than at any time since World War Two, the 2016 Global Peace Index showed on Wednesday. The annual index, which measures 23 indicators including incidents of violent crime, countries' levels of militarization and weapons imports, said intensifying conflicts in the Middle East were mostly to blame. "Quite often, in the mayhem which is happening in the Middle East currently, we lose sight of the other positive trends," said Steve Killelea, founder of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), which produces the index.

How Hillary Clinton Shifted Leftward

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 05:21 PM PDT

When she stood before New York Democrats and launched her first campaign for office 16 years ago, Hillary Clinton was unabashed about her centrist credentials. Now Mrs. Clinton touted that third-way philosophy, too. On a swath of domestic issues, dragged along by a rapidly changing party and a surprisingly tough primary opponent in Sen. Bernie Sanders, Mrs. Clinton has moved to the left, sometimes reversing her positions and in other cases changing her tone in significant ways.
