A public funeral, international tribunal, and justice denied for Lebanon Posted: 08 Jun 2016 02:21 PM PDT The death last month of a top Hezbollah commander in Syria prompted proud eulogies from the party's leadership, satisfaction from his enemies – and, in a quiet suburb of The Hague, a legal quandary. For Mustafa Badreddine was not only a veteran Hezbollah commander who oversaw the party's military intervention in Syria. Although Badreddine was given a full public funeral and his body lies buried in Hezbollah's "martyrs" cemetery in southern Beirut, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) has concluded that his trial would continue. |
Five dead in Turkey bombing blamed on Kurdish rebels Posted: 08 Jun 2016 02:16 PM PDT Five people including a pregnant policewoman were killed in a car bombing Wednesday in Kurdish majority southeastern Turkey, a day after a deadly attack hit Istanbul. Both bombings targeted Turkish police and have been blamed on Kurdish rebels waging a decades-long insurgency against the state. A spokesman for the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, said it was too early to attribute blame but Prime Minister Binali Yildirim blamed the "killer PKK", referring to the outlawed rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party. |
Civilian deaths undermining US military missions: report Posted: 08 Jun 2016 02:08 PM PDT The United States underestimates the long-term impact of civilian deaths on its military missions and is failing to implement lessons learned from 15 grueling years in Afghanistan, a report released Wednesday found. While the US military frequently stresses it does all it can to prevent civilian casualties, the report said poorly planned air strikes, misidentified targets, unexploded ordinance and rogue partner troops have too often led to non-combatant deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. The study by Open Society Foundations, a charity created by US magnate and philanthropist George Soros, found that in Afghanistan, such deaths seriously undermined the mission and fueled the growth of the Taliban. |
UN: Setbacks haven't weakened Islamic State strategically Posted: 08 Jun 2016 02:07 PM PDT UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The Islamic State extremist group hasn't been weakened strategically or irreversibly despite military setbacks in Iraq and Syria, the U.N. political chief said Wednesday. |

Turkey blames Kurdish militants for Istanbul car bombing Posted: 08 Jun 2016 01:31 PM PDT By Tulay Karadeniz and Seyhmus Cakan ANKARA/MIDYAT, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's office blamed Kurdish militants for a car bombing that killed 11 people in central Istanbul, while a second bomb on Wednesday killed five people in the largely Kurdish southeast. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, meanwhile, said that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), blamed for Tuesday's attack in Istanbul, had recently sought to revive peace talks and offered to lay down their arms. A ceasefire with the PKK collapsed almost a year ago, setting off the worst violence the country has seen in two decades. |

Libyan brigades edge closer to Islamic State stronghold of Sirte: security sources Posted: 08 Jun 2016 10:54 AM PDT Forces aligned with Libya's new unity government advanced on the eastern and southern outskirts of the Islamic State stronghold of Sirte on Wednesday, taking control of at least one military camp, security sources said. The brigades, who are based in the western city of Misrata, launched their counter-offensive against Islamic State last month, pushing the militants back along the coastal road to the west of Sirte and saying they intended to recapture the city. The brigades are aligned with the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), which has been trying to establish its authority over Libya's competing political and armed factions since arriving in Tripoli in March. |

TRUMAN (Reuters) - The U.S. military will have two aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean Sea this month ahead of a NATO summit in Warsaw as Washington seeks to balance Russian military activities and accelerate its fight against Islamic State militants. Eisenhower when it arrives en route to the Gulf, allowing the Truman to head back to the United States after an extended eight-month deployment, Navy officials on board the Truman said. |

U.N. says 90,000 civilians could be trapped in Iraq's Falluja Posted: 08 Jun 2016 09:56 AM PDT By Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United Nations on Wednesday revised significantly upward the number of civilians believed trapped in besieged Falluja, an Islamic State stronghold near Baghdad, to possibly 90,000 from a previous estimate of 50,000. In a telephone interview with Reuters in Baghdad, the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande, warned that civilians could face a "harrowing" situation in the besieged city 50 kilometers (32 miles) west of Baghdad. |
Islamic State loses ground on fronts in Syria, Iraq Posted: 08 Jun 2016 09:29 AM PDT By Tom Perry and Ahmed Rasheed BEIRUT/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic State's far-flung enemies in Syria and Iraq pressed ahead on Wednesday with major advances on multiple fronts that have put some of the greatest pressure on the ultra-hardline Islamists since they declared their caliphate two years ago. A spokesman for a U.S.-backed alliance in northern Syria said it was poised to enter the city of Manbij, a week after launching an assault with the aim of cutting off the last stretch of Turkish frontier still under Islamic State control. A short distance further west, rebels fighting against both Islamic State and the government of President Bashar al-Assad said Islamic State fighters had pulled out of an area near the border. |

The army was previously surrounding Falluja from positions outside the city, which is located 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad. "Our forces have begun in the early hours of the morning progressing in al-Shuhada," a southern neighborhood of Falluja, Sabah al-Numani, a spokesman of the Counter-Terrorism Service, said. |
Eritrean leaders should be tried for crimes against humanity: U.N. Posted: 08 Jun 2016 08:30 AM PDT By Tom Miles GENEVA (Reuters) - U.N. human rights investigators accused Eritrean leaders on Wednesday of crimes against humanity including torture, rape, murder and enslaving hundreds of thousands of people and called for the case to be referred to the International Criminal Court. Atrocities had been committed since the country's independence in 1991 and were continuing, the U.N. Commission of Inquiry said in a report that was immediately rejected by the government. "Particular individuals, including officials at the highest levels of State, the ruling party - the People's Front for Democracy and Justice - and commanding officers bear responsibility for crimes against humanity and other gross human rights violations," the report said. |

Iraqi forces seize part of southern Fallujah from IS Posted: 08 Jun 2016 07:32 AM PDT Iraqi government forces fighting to retake Fallujah from the Islamic State group seized a southern neighbourhood of the city on Wednesday, officials said. Led by the country's counter-terrorism service, Iraqi forces and allied militias backed by air support from a US-led coalition began an operation on May 23 to wrest the city from IS. Iraqi forces made incursions into Fallujah, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Baghdad, in the early days of the offensive, but their advance soon slowed. |
Poor U.S.-Russia relations increase risk of dirty bomb in Europe - experts Posted: 08 Jun 2016 07:28 AM PDT (Corrects this June 7 story to remove reference in paragraph 6 to Swedish diplomat Hans Blix and IAEA chief Yukiya Amano, who did not attend the conference.) By Toby Sterling AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Tension between Russia and the West may be distracting them from cooperating to prevent an accidental nuclear confrontation or a dirty bomb attack by militants, nuclear policy experts said on Tuesday. Former U.S. Secretary of Defence William Perry said he regretted the current lack of communication between the United States and Russia, which went into a deep freeze after Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. Anatoly Adamishin, a former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, argued that the U.S. has focused on a policy of "strangling Russia" and hoping for the departure of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has the effect of putting Russia at the forefront of a list of U.S. enemies. |
Student Loan Origination Fees Changing Soon Posted: 08 Jun 2016 07:00 AM PDT In addition to affecting student loan origination fees, which are set to rise slightly this year, the Budget Control Act of 2011 determines the maximum value of two federal grants for students: Iraq-Afghanistan Service and TEACH grants. Lenders often charge a fee to originate, or issue, a student loan. For private student loans, origination fees vary from lender to lender. |
Game of Drones: The Air Force Ramps Up Video Game Warfare Posted: 08 Jun 2016 06:54 AM PDT With its Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) increasingly being used to target terrorists and support ground troops, the U.S. Air Force plans to double the number of its drone squadrons over the next five years. The rough terrain of Afghanistan has made it a testing ground for remote operations employing drones and UAVs are in the air there more than eight times as long as manned fighter aircraft. Overall, the number of hours logged by the MQ-9 Reaper attack drones has more than doubled between 2011 and 2015. |

Hillary Clinton: a burning ambition and resilience to match Posted: 07 Jun 2016 09:14 PM PDT When out on the stump, in cafes, churches and rallies across the country, Clinton tells a thousand tales of the adversity she has faced down over the course of four decades in public life. "I have the scars to prove it," quips the former secretary of state, painted by her enemies as "crooked," "corrupt" -- even an enabler of her husband's affairs -- as the Republican attacks flew thick and fast throughout the 2016 White House campaign. |
Global violence worsens, driven by Middle East conflicts: peace index Posted: 07 Jun 2016 09:07 PM PDT By Alex Whiting LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The world has become increasingly violent with deaths from conflict at a 25-year high, terrorist attacks at an all-time high and more people displaced than at any time since World War Two, the 2016 Global Peace Index showed on Wednesday. The annual index, which measures 23 indicators including incidents of violent crime, countries' levels of militarization and weapons imports, said intensifying conflicts in the Middle East were mostly to blame. "Quite often, in the mayhem which is happening in the Middle East currently, we lose sight of the other positive trends," said Steve Killelea, founder of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), which produces the index. |
Hillary and Bernie, in each other's words Posted: 07 Jun 2016 09:05 PM PDT Hillary Clinton locked in the Democratic White House nomination on Tuesday, but Bernie Sanders has yet to officially throw in the towel -- having vowed to fight on all the way to the party convention in July. The American political tradition is for presidential rivals to bury the hatchet once the primary season is over, and throw their joint weight into the battle against the opposite camp as election day draws near. |

How Hillary Clinton Shifted Leftward Posted: 07 Jun 2016 05:21 PM PDT When she stood before New York Democrats and launched her first campaign for office 16 years ago, Hillary Clinton was unabashed about her centrist credentials. Now Mrs. Clinton touted that third-way philosophy, too. On a swath of domestic issues, dragged along by a rapidly changing party and a surprisingly tough primary opponent in Sen. Bernie Sanders, Mrs. Clinton has moved to the left, sometimes reversing her positions and in other cases changing her tone in significant ways. |
