The Air Canada Airbus A320 was cleared to land on Runway 28-Right at San Francisco International Airport shortly before midnight on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said. Syrian Observatory says it has 'confirmed information' that Islamic State chief is dead Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:07 AM PDT By Lisa Barrington and Ellen Francis CAIRO/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed. The report came just days after the Iraqi army recaptured the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi's forces overran almost exactly three years ago. Russia's Defence Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa. |
Julian Assange: I urged Trump Jr to publish Russia emails via WikiLeaks Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:35 PM PDT Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder, has claimed that he contacted Donald Trump Jr and tried to persuade him to publish emails showing he was eager to accept sensitive information about Hillary Clinton via the anti-secrecy website. Instead, the US president's eldest son did so via Twitter, igniting a firestorm of criticism around his apparent willingness to work with the Russian government against his father's Democratic rival. "Contacted Trump Jr this morning on why he should publish his emails (i.e with us)," tweeted Assange, who is based at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. |
British man Luke Rutter killed fighting Isil in Syria Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:02 AM PDT A British man killed fighting with Kurdish forces against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) filmed a video before his death where he apologised to his family for not telling them he was going to Syria. Luke Rutter, 22, was killed last week during the battle to drive Isil fighters from Raqqa, their self-declared capital in northern Syria. He is the fourth Briton to die fighting with the Kurds. Mr Rutter, who was from Birkenhead in Merseyside, joined the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in March but reportedly told his family that the was volunteering for the French Foreign Legion. In a video recorded before his death, he apologised for the deception. I said that I was going somewhere else, I didn't. I apologise massively for that. Aside from that I don't regret my decision and I hope you respect it. His death was announced in a statement by the YPG, which said that he died so "all the people of the world may have a free life". Kimmie Taylor, a British woman fighting alongside Kurdish fighters, posted "rest in peace, comrade" on Facebook in response to news of Mr Rutter's death. Mr Rutter was killed alongside an American volunteer named Robert Grodt. Mr Grodt came to prominence during the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2012 when he was filmed coming to the aid of a woman who had been pepper sprayed by a New York police officer. The British volunteer was given the Kurdish nom-de-guerre Soro Zinar by his Kurdish comrades. In the video he speaks of having "nothing very significant" in his educational history but was put through weapons and language training with the YPG before being sent to the front lines. Isil defeated in Mosul after three years 01:15 Jesper Söder, a Swedish fighter with the YPG, said he heard Mr Rutter had been a good recruit. "I knew who he was although I didn't serve with him directly. From everything I heard he did very well in training and was a good fighter," he told The Telegraph. Mr Rutter was part of a unit fighting with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed rebel group made up mainly of Kurds but also some Arabs. The SDF is leading the assault on Raqqa with air support from the US-led coalition against Isil. He is believed to have been killed during an ambush on the outskirts of Raqqa on July 5. "Our comrade Soro was martyred in the right against Daesh fascism," the YPG said, using Mr Rutter's Kurdish nickname and a disparaging Arabic name for Isil. The Rutter family could not be reached for comment. Three other British volunteers have died fighting for the Kurds against Isil. Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, a former Royal Marine was killed in March 2015 while fighting in northeast Syria. Dean Carl Evans, a farmer from Reading, died during the offensive to take back the town of Manbij on the Syrian-Turkish border in July last year. Ryan Lock, a chef from West Sussex, shot himself rather than being taken prisoner in fighting just before Christmas 2016. The emergence of Isil |

Guilty pug has the absolute worst poker face of all time Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:18 AM PDT Definitive fact: all dogs are good dogs — even when they break stuff. It's hard to blame a pet for doing something wrong because they're just so cute and we just love 'em so much. And because they know we'll snuggle them anyway, even though they've done something wrong, some sneaky pets will act as though they had nothing to do with it, knowing they can trick us into thinking that all the pillows just happened to burst open all on their own. SEE ALSO: Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers But Twitter user Kai Johnson's pug, Alfie, couldn't hide his guilt for long. Isil leader Baghdadi dead, Syrian watchdog claims Posted: 11 Jul 2017 05:32 AM PDT Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of Islamic State, is dead, according to a Syrian war monitor. "(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor," Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. "We learned of it today but we do not know when he died or how." Russia's defence ministry said last month that it may have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa, but the US said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been sceptical. Russia said the air strike took place on May 28 and claimed a number of Isil's senior leadership, including Baghdadi, was killed. However they have so far offered no proof. News of his death has not been independently verified by the Telegraph. The Pentagon said in a statement released today that the US has no information to corroborate reports. Baghdadi's death had been announced many times before but the Observatory has a track record of credible reporting on Syria's civil war. Baghdadi declared himself the head of Isil's so-called caliphate, spanning across Syria and Iraq, in the summer of 2014. Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 60 seconds 01:06 He made his first - and only - appearance from the Grand al-Nouri Mosque in Mosul. The claims of his death came a day after Iraq's prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the city - one of Isil's most important strongholds - fully liberated from the jihadists. The world's most-wanted man has been rumoured wounded or killed a number of times in the past. The last sign of life he gave was in November last year after Iraqi forces supported by the aerial might of the coalition launched their reconquest of Mosul, the country's second city. Inside Baghdadi's neighbourhood 01:28 In an audio recording, he urged his men to defend Mosul to the bitter end and Iraqi elite forces have gained huge ground but are still battling die-hard jihadists around the Old City. Baghdadi was said to have left Mosul earlier this year and has since been reportedly spotted in various areas near the Syrian-Iraqi border. But his whereabouts were never confirmed. That low profile - a perfect antithesis to Osama bin Laden - is partly what Baghdadi, who has a $25-million US bounty on his head, had owed his rise as well as his survival to. |
A year later, injured turtle returns to man who fixed his shell Posted: 10 Jul 2017 03:14 PM PDT A turtle's shell is essential to their protection. A damaged shell makes the creature vulnerable, and can even sometimes be fatal. Luckily, there are heroes that care about the wellbeing of our scaly friends, like this Reddit user's father. SEE ALSO: This adorable baby turtle blob is bringing hope to Southeast Asia On Monday, Daniel Hollenback — who goes by the username Sublimebro — uploaded photos to Reddit of a turtle whose injuries were healed thanks to his father's efforts. The tiny turtle came back a year later looking better than ever. Adorably, the Reddit user's father — presumably the above mentioned Ken — marked a "Ken's Body Shop" on the putty patch. Although Ken's writing didn't survive, the turtle thankfully did, and people made car repair jokes about it. Comment from discussion Oryan_18's comment from discussion "Last year my Dad patched up a turtle's cracked shell with body putty. Look who has returned healthy a year later!". Is Volkswagen to beat Tesla at its own game? Posted: 10 Jul 2017 09:51 AM PDT By the time Volkswagen begins delivering its first standalone battery-powered electric car in 2020, Tesla expects to be building and selling at least one million units of its own electric vehicles per year. Despite this, Volkswagen believes it's still better placed than Tesla to become the dominant force in the global automotive market when it comes to all-electric vehicles. Herbert Diess, who's in charge of the VW Group's namesake brand, believes that what Volkswagen lacks in first-mover advantage compared to Tesla can be more than made up for by its global scale and its greater manufacturing expertise and experience. |

Prosecutors argue against prison time for New Jersey 'Bridgegate' mastermind Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:42 PM PDT By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - The mastermind of the "Bridgegate" lane closure scandal that helped torpedo New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's presidential bid should not be sentenced to prison due to his cooperation, U.S. prosecutors said in a court document filed on Tuesday. David Wildstein, who helped the government convict two former Christie associates after he pleaded guilty in 2015, is set to be sentenced in federal court in Newark on Wednesday. Wildstein, 55, admitted overseeing a scheme to shut down access lanes at the busy George Washington Bridge in 2013 to create massive traffic gridlock as punishment for a local Democratic mayor who refused to endorse Christie's reelection campaign. |
Can you spot the sneaky leopard hiding in the tree? Posted: 11 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT Leopards are experts when it comes to staying hidden, but there was really no need for this big cat to be so shy in front of the camera. German wildlife photographer Ingo Gerlach, who has almost 40 years experience, captured the impressive shot at the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya. But can you spot the leopard? Your eyes may be immediately drawn to the unlucky impala hanging from the tree branches, but take a closer look and you'll spot the hidden killer. Did you spot the leopard? Credit: Ingo Gerlach / Caters The hungry leopard can be seen climbing up the tree trunk to retrieve its dinner, left high in the branches to stop rivals from stealing its food. "Mostly I'm in Europe and in Kenya. This results in images that are unique. And that is saying something in today's flood of images," Gerlach explains on his website [translated]. Astudy published in the Journal of Animal Ecology in April examined in further detail why leopards hoist their food into trees. "Leopards exhibit a unique form of short-term food caching, regularly hoisting, storing and consuming prey in trees," researchers explained. "Leopards hoisted 51% of kills. They were more likely to hoist kills of an intermediate size ... and in response to the presence of some competitors." They said the prey was most likely to be eaten by hyaenas if left on the ground, using data from 2032 prey items killed by 104 leopards from 2013 to 2015. Gerlach has captured a number of impressive 'spot the animal' photos published in the media. You can see more of his work on Facebook.
