In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2017, there were 303,916 such arrests, the lowest level since fiscal 1971. Unable to get the U.S. Congress or Mexico to fully fund his border wall, President Donald Trump will post National Guard troops along the Mexican frontier, officials said. (Reuters)

Big shark swings by cops just doing their jobCops are used to surprises on the job, but seldom a casual great white shark. South Australian Police looking to breathalyse and check up on boat operators last Friday were greeted by the animal, who cruised around them for about 10 minutes. SEE ALSO: Try not to get hypnotized by this 'shark whisperer' and his calming powers It's estimated the shark, nicknamed Noah by police, measured around 4.5 to five metres (14 feet) long. "I told the boys to back off a bit because the shark was right next to us," fisherman Mark Oaks told ABC News. "For probably the next 10 or 15 minutes we just sat around. The police brought the big boat in, which is where the footage from above the shark has come from."  "Noah wasn't keen on being breath tested and our Water Operations Unit officers were happy to oblige!" South Australia Police wrote in a Facebook post. The great white shark is arguably one of the most feared species in Australian waters due to its threat to humans. It is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, however its exact population in the south-west of Australia remains unknown despite attempts to calculate it. Who is Nasim Aghdam? Everything we know about the YouTube HQ shooter

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:46 AM PDT

Who is Nasim Aghdam? Everything we know about the YouTube HQ shooterThe woman who opened fire at YouTube's offices in California on Tuesday raged against the video-sharing service for what she saw as censorship of her clips on her niche channel covering vegan issues, animal rights, Persian culture and fitness. Nasim Aghdam, 39, of Southern California, was identified by police officials as the woman who approached the campus around lunchtime and began to fire before entering the building of the Google-owned video sharing service. One man and two women were shot in the incident before the female shooter apparently committed suicide. Ms Aghdam's family say she was "angry" with the company and had complained about YouTube supposedly censoring her videos and cutting her ad revenue.  They had reported her missing to police and warned them she "might do something" after officers spotted her sleeping in a car in Mountain View hours before the shooting. Suspected shooter Nasim Aghdam Aghdam had a significant internet presence before her clips were scrubbed and her account deleted in the aftermath of the shooting. She reportedly posted videos under the name "Nasim Wonder1," with some dating back to 2011. YouTube shooting suspect Nasim Aghdam, who describes herself as a vegan artist, bodybuilder, and animal rights activist, often lashed out at the video platform for censoring and demonetizing her content pic.twitter.com/AsQiCz3SHB— Brianna Sacks (@bri_sacks) April 4, 2018 Reported missing by her family The YouTuber's brother told The Mercury News she had been reported missing since the weekend and had stopped answering her mobile phone. "She was always complaining that YouTube ruined her life," he said. Mr Aghdam says he warned police his sister "might do something" after realising she had travelled hundreds of miles across the state to Mountain View. Her family say they reported her missing to police  "I Googled 'Mountain View' and it was close to YouTube headquarters. And she had a problem with YouTube," he told KGTV. "So I called the cop again and told him there's a reason she went all the way from San Diego to there, so she might do something. "So they didn't do anything, and she got killed … and three or four more people got hurt." Nasim Aghdam had a number of different social media accounts  Police found her sleeping in a vehicle in a car park the night before the shooting and contacted her family to say she had been found.   "Our officers made contact with the woman after the license plate of her vehicle matched that of a missing person out of Southern California," a Mountain View police spokesperson confirmed. "The woman confirmed her identity to us and answered subsequent questions. At the conclusion of our discussion, her family was notified that she had been located." Ms Aghdam's father told local media he had warned police that she "hated" the company and expressed concern that she may be travelling to the company's headquarters in San Burno. He told NBC News that YouTube had "stopped everything and now she has no income". Her brother added today would have been her 39th birthday.  Complaints about YouTube According to NBC, she says in a video posted in January 2017 that YouTube "discriminated and filtered" her content. In the video, Aghdam reportedly says her channel used to get lots of views but that after being "filtered" by the company, it received far fewer views. She complained YouTube had imposed an age restriction on one of her workout videos because it was too racy, yet it hadn't taken the same action for stars like Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj, whose videos, she said, were inappropriate for children. Suspected shooter Nasim Aghdam posted workout videos on YouTube  "I am being discriminated on and filtered on YouTube and I am not the only one," she said. Aghdam was angry at YouTube because it had stopped paying her for videos she posted on the platform, her father told the Bay Area News Group . He told NBC News that YouTube had "stopped everything and now she has no income". The suspected shooter in today's YouTube incident has been identified. Please see press release for details - https://t.co/Xvr2l9bB9spic.twitter.com/NEBoX3WWK5— San Bruno Police (@SanBrunoPolice) April 4, 2018 On the website NasimeSabz.com,  identified as hers by the San Francisco Chronicle, she had several posts about Persian culture and veganism, interspersed with rants against YouTube. Those complaints included claims the company was not sharing enough revenue with people who create videos for the platform. "There is no free speech in real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system," she wrote in one post. "There is no equal growth opportunity on YouTube or any other video sharing site." Her most recent YouTube video  came three weeks ago and was titled "Leg Exercises At Home Fitness." Animal Rights activism Aghdam was also a prominent animal rights protester. She was quoted in a 2009 story in the San Diego Union-Tribune about a protest by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals against the use of pigs in military trauma training. Nasim Aghdam was also a prominent animal rights protester Credit: peacethunder.com She dressed in a wig and jeans with drops of painted "blood" on them, holding a plastic sword at the demonstration outside the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base. "For me, animal rights equal human rights," Aghdam told the Union-Tribune at the time. A message on her YouTube accounts said the pages  were removed due to "multiple or severe violations of YouTube's policy against spam, deceptive practices, and misleading content or other Term of Service violations."

Scott Pruitt just tried to explain those raises and it went oh so terribly wrong

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Scott Pruitt just tried to explain those raises and it went oh so terribly wrongIt's been a helluva few days for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt. After controversy on top of controversy, Pruitt was found to have used a little-known provision in the Safe Drinking Water Act to give sizable raises to political aides on Tuesday.  The provision permits the EPA administrator to hire up to 30 people without White House or congressional approval, but Pruitt instead used it to hand out raises of $28,130 and $56,765 to his aides, ballooning one of his staffers salaries to more than $160,000. All of this has put Pruitt in hot water with his political counterparts in Washington, with some calling for his resignation over ethical issues. SEE ALSO: Here's a running list of all the Scott Pruitt scandals A day after the news broke, Pruitt granted Fox News an exclusive interview to deny knowing about the raises. You might have imagined it went well, since Pruitt almost only goes on Fox News and other friendly outlets. But, actually, it did not. At all. See the clip below. "Now if you're committed to the Trump agenda, why did you go around the president and the White House and give pay raises to two staffers?" Fox News national correspondent Ed Henry said. "I did not, my staff did and I found out about it yesterday and I changed it," Pruitt responded. "So who did it?" Henry said. "I don't know," Pruitt said. "You don't know? You run the agency, you don't know who did it?" Henry said. "I found out about this yesterday, and I corrected the action. And we are in the process of finding out how it took place and correcting it," Pruitt said. Henry then went on to point out that both of the staffers who received the raises — Sarah Greenwalt and Millan Hupp — are friends of Pruitt's from Oklahoma, a point that Pruitt dodged. He then also pointed out that the largest of the raises is just about equal to the median income in the country, some $57,000. "They didn't get a pay raise," Pruitt responded. "I stopped that yesterday." It's not the best look for Pruitt, who seems to be having scandal after scandal break by the minute. In Wednesday's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was asked if Trump is OK with Pruitt's actions, to which she replied, "The president's not, we're reviewing the situation."  .@PressSec asked why Trump is OK with Pruitt's actions:"The president's not, we're reviewing the situation."Does the president have confidence in Pruitt?"The president thinks that he's done a good job, particularly on the deregulation front.." but WH is seriously reviewing. — Katie Watson (@kathrynw5) April 4, 2018 It's a rapid departure from the White House's message just a few days ago, when President Trump reportedly called Pruitt and said "Keep your head up, keep fighting." Pruitt, who does not recognize mainstream climate science findings and has called for a televised science debate with climate deniers, has played a leading role in undoing the Obama administration's actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions from global warming. This week, he announced a move to rescind the Obama-mandated car and truck fuel economy standards, meant to incentivize more fuel efficient cars, and he has taken numerous other steps that would increase U.S. emissions compared to the track we were on before President Trump took office. So, maybe, Pruitt should stay away from the TV. You know, until the next scandal breaks. Andrew Freedman contributed reporting to this article. The new $1.3 trillion federal spending plan allocates $350 million to the Department of Education to offer forgiveness to borrowers who met the requirements of Public Service Loan Forgiveness but were enrolled in ineligible repayment plans. To be eligible for PSLF, a federal student loan borrower must work full time in the public or nonprofit sector for 10 years and make 120 on-time monthly payments in a qualifying repayment plan.

After 'Trump Effect,' illegal Mexico border crossings reboundPresident Donald Trump's shock order to send National Guard troops to the frontier with Mexico Wednesday came after data showed that illegal immigration has sharply rebounded following a plunge in his first year in office. Trump's warning of a crackdown when he entered the White House in January 2017 drove the number of apprehensions of illegal border crossers -- an indicator of total crossing numbers -- to four-decade lows. For example, apprehensions in February 2017 were 23,555, down from more than 38,000 a year earlier.
