Fears of 'Patriot Act a la francaise' after Paris attacks Posted: 17 Nov 2015 04:40 PM PST With emotions running high in France after the attacks in Paris, President Francois Hollande has called for sweeping new security powers, raising fears of a French-style Patriot Act. The tough new security measures outlined by Hollande in an extraordinary meeting of parliament on Monday suggested some of France's "liberte" would be another casualty of Friday's horrific attacks, and could lead the country towards the sort of controversial snooping powers introduced by the US after the attacks of September 2001. Hollande called for the state of emergency declared immediately after the attacks -- a measure dating back to the Algerian war of the 1950s and early 1960s -- to be extended to three months and for changes to the French constitution to make it easier for an emergency to be declared. |

Paris attack suspect eludes police, complicating probe Posted: 17 Nov 2015 04:32 PM PST By Alastair Macdonald, Chine Labbé and John Irish BRUSSELS/PARIS (Reuters) - French police had three opportunities to catch a Belgian suspect in the Paris attacks and each time let him go, a defense lawyer said on Tuesday, adding to the missed signals complicating efforts to track down those behind an onslaught in which 129 people were killed. Friday night's attacks, claimed by Islamic State militants, raised security concerns around the world. Bomb fears prompted Hanover, Germany, police to call off a soccer match between Germany and the Netherlands two hours before game time on Tuesday. |

Paris attack may add firepower to U.S. defense stocks Posted: 17 Nov 2015 03:29 PM PST U.S. defense stocks, already on the upswing following the recent budget deal, are expected to rise further if the Paris attack gives a fillip to rising international sales. Lockheed Martin Corp , Raytheon Co , and Northrop Grumman Corp are among companies poised to benefit the most, analysts said. The stocks have risen 4-5.1 percent since Friday's carnage in Paris. |
Why the Syrian refugee issue turned partisan so quickly Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:53 PM PST Since Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris, Republicans and Democrats have shown that they can at least mourn together. Beyond that, deep partisanship has quickly set in, particularly on US plans to accept 10,000 refugees from Syria. On Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan called for a "pause" in Syrian refugees coming to the United States. |

Charlie Hebdo strikes back after latest Paris attacks Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:15 PM PST France's Charlie Hebdo journal, the target of lethal attacks by Islamist militants last January, defended party-goers over gun-toters in a new edition following Friday's Paris assault. The satirical weekly, which hit world headlines when gunmen killed 12 people in an attack on its Paris offices last January, published a front-page cartoon contrasting Islamist gunmen and Western revelers. The edition was the first since Friday's attackers killed at least 129 people who were sharing a drink on the terraces of Paris cafes or joining a rock concert in the Bataclan hall. |
Czech president attends anti-Islam rally on revolution anniversary Posted: 17 Nov 2015 01:57 PM PST The Czech president attended a rally against migrants and Islam in Prague on Tuesday on the anniversary of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which peacefully toppled communism in then Czechoslovakia. Nearly 70 percent of Czechs oppose the arrival of migrants and refugees in their country, according to a recent survey by the Czech Academy of Sciences. Few asylum seekers have chosen to stay in the largely secular European Union and NATO member nation of 10.5 million, with a majority heading to wealthier Germany and other western EU states. |
U.S. presidential candidates debate whether to accept Syrian refugees Posted: 17 Nov 2015 01:53 PM PST By Steve Holland and Erin McPike WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush broke with rivals on Tuesday by saying he would support some Syrian refugees coming into the United States but stressed the screening must be tough to ensure no Islamic State militants enter the country. The deaths of 129 people in Paris on Friday in attacks for which Islamic State claimed responsibility have given both Democratic and Republican candidates an opening to debate what steps to take against militants whose reach into Europe from Syria and Iraq is a direct challenge to Western leaders. |
Over 1,200 European jihadis have returned in past 2 years Posted: 17 Nov 2015 12:28 PM PST PARIS (AP) — More than 1,200 Europeans who joined Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq have returned home in the past two years, an Associated Press count shows. French military aid request backed by EU after Paris attacks Posted: 17 Nov 2015 10:09 AM PST European Union nations on Tuesday unanimously backed a French request for support with military missions in the wake of the Paris attacks, after France invoked a previously unused part of the bloc's treaties to seek help. "Today France demanded the aid and assistance of the whole of Europe. |
Exclusive: How Kurdistan bypassed Baghdad and sold oil on global markets Posted: 17 Nov 2015 09:48 AM PST By Dmitry Zhdannikov LONDON (Reuters) - Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan has for the first time detailed its secretive oil exports operations and said it plans to sell more, whether Baghdad likes it or not, as it needs money to survive and fight Islamic State. The region's minister for natural resources, Ashti Hawrami, said that to avoid detection oil was often funneled through Israel, transferred directly between ships off the coast of Malta, and decoy ships used to make it harder for Baghdad to track. Kurdistan says it had been forced to bypass Baghdad and begin exporting oil directly because the latter refused to respect budgets in 2014 and 2015. |
Syria's Assad says no intelligence sharing with France unless change in policy Posted: 17 Nov 2015 09:36 AM PST Syria will only share intelligence information with France if Paris changes its policies in the region, President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with French magazine Valeurs Actuelles. "If the French government is not serious in its fight against terrorism, we will not waste our time collaborating with a country, government or an institution that supports terrorism," he said in the interview carried out the day after Friday's deadly attacks in Paris. "You have to first change policy so that it is based on one criteria, to be part of an alliance that joins countries only fighting terrorism and not supporting them." Assad, battling a multi-pronged insurgency against his rule, repeated that he had always said he was ready to be part of an international coalition against terrorism and that it was up to Syrians to decide their future through the ballot box. |

"In the grand scheme of things Baghdadi seems to be an important figure in decision-making," said jihadism expert Aymenn al-Tamimi. |

British PM to press for UK air strikes against IS in Syria Posted: 17 Nov 2015 08:36 AM PST British Prime Minster David Cameron said on Tuesday he would present to parliament a "comprehensive strategy" for tackling Islamic State, including launching air strikes against the militants in Syria. Cameron says he wants to extend Britain's strikes against Islamic State in Iraq to Syria to fall into line with allies, but fears a repeat of the defeat he suffered in parliament in 2013 on plans to bomb Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces. The leader of Britain's main opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, opposes extending the strikes to Syria and has, according to local media, called on his party to follow his lead. |

"We don't have enough clothes, we don't have enough blankets, we're very cold," says Iraqi Mohammed Swara, who has visited the medical caravan in the camp, known as the Jungle, to deal with what are becoming constant colds. Residents here have opened restaurants, barbershops, churches, mosques, and schools to create a semblance of normal life. |

"This is a war, as I've said repeatedly, within Islam," he said, stressing the high number of Muslim victims of the Islamic State (IS) group. New U.N. Libya envoy to restart unity government talks Posted: 17 Nov 2015 07:46 AM PST The United Nations will restart talks with Libya's rival factions to address outstanding hurdles to a unity government, giving priority to security issues, the new U.N. envoy for the country said on Tuesday. A year of U.N.-sponsored negotiations have so far failed to reach agreement on a proposed national government to end the turmoil in the North African country, four years after the uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi as leader. Libya has slipped deeper into chaos with two rival governments, each backed by a multitude of armed factions. |
