Kim Jong-un 'blasts workers at factories for not working hard enough' Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:13 PM PDT Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, has lambasted workers at two textile factories for not working hard enough, failing to take care of their buildings and moaning about shortages of money and materials, according to state-run media. Mr Kim expressed his fury at the failing of workers at two factories in the city of Sinuiju, close to the border with China, the Korean Central News Agency reported on Monday. At the Sinuiju Textile Mill, Mr Kim declared that the factory and its workers have supported the nation's light industry sector since it was established in the 1950s - before condemning its present-day workforce for failing to live up to that "proud tradition". Instead of complaining about a lack of funds and equipment, the workers should put more effort into modernising their facilities by themselves. He added that the employees needed to increase their productivity. Kim Jong-Un visits the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill Credit: AFP On a subsequent visit to another nearby textile factory, Mr Kim criticised the staff for not making repairs to their crumbling buildings, saying the "precious" facilities looked more like a stable. Management of the two facilities appear to have got off lightly, however, as Mr Kim is notorious for a short temper and draconian punishments for those that displease him. Kim Jong-un inspects the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill Credit: AFP In May 2015, the North Korean leader flew into a rage during a visit to the Taedonggang Terrapin Farm, which had been built on the orders of his father, after discovering a number of dead baby terrapins in the tanks. He was further incensed when managers admitted they had not been able to breed lobsters ahead of a national holiday marking the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea. Despite the manager's explanation that the terrapins had died due to electricity shortages, Mr Kim insisted the failings were down to bad management and had the man summarily shot. |
San Francisco skies turn orange as wildfires return to Northern California Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:58 PM PDT San Francisco took on a post-apocalyptic shade of orange, after smoke from Northern Californian wildfires reached the city on Sunday. Just under a year since the deadliest firestorms in state history, intense wildfire has returned to the region, fanned by high winds and hot temperatures. SEE ALSO: Flames once again return to California's wine country Smoke and ash from fires burning in the Yolo and Lake counties filled the sky about 75 miles south in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday morning, giving the city a foreboding orange filter. As of Sunday evening on July 1, the flames had spread to an area of 32,500 acres. On Sunday morning, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management tweeted a warning for city residents, announcing the air quality in the city had changed to "moderate," and that older adults, children, or people with heart or lung disease "should consider reducing prolonged/heavy exertion." Trump: I'm told I shouldn't ask my SCOTUS nominee about Roe v. Wade Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:20 AM PDT President Trump said he probably won't ask potential Supreme Court candidates about their opinions on abortion before nominating Justice Anthony M. Kennedy's replacement. In a program that aired Sunday morning, Fox News journalist Maria Bartiromo asked Trump if he would ask his nominees beforehand how they might vote on Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision affirming that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman's decision to have an abortion. Trump responded that he's been advised not to ask such specific questions and that he plans to appoint another conservative justice like Neil Gorsuch, whom Trump appointed to replace Antonin Scalia. |

Crews scramble to protect homes from fierce California wildfire Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:53 PM PDT More than 1,200 firefighters aided by water-dropping helicopters battled a wind-driven wildfire raging out of control in Northern California on Monday, threatening homes and other structures as thick black smoke drifted across the San Francisco Bay Area. The so-called County Fire, which broke out on Saturday afternoon in rural Yolo County, west of Sacramento, has already blackened more than 50 square miles of grass, brush and dense scrub oak and was only 3 percent contained as of Monday afternoon. Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection said the job of hand crews and bulldozer operators trying to cut containment lines was made more difficult by high winds, which were blowing embers and starting new spot fires. |

Thai navy divers widen cave passage in search for missing boys Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:25 AM PDT By Panu Wongcha-um CHIANG RAI, Thailand (Reuters) - Rescuers in Thailand scrabbled to clear a constricted passageway for divers deep inside a flooded cave complex on Monday as the search for 12 boys and their soccer coach entered a ninth day. The divers from a Thai navy SEAL unit were within 500 meters of a chamber containing an elevated rock mound, nicknamed "Pattaya Beach" by cavers, which could have provided the boys with a refuge when rains flooded the cave, blocking the way out. Progress has been slow as divers need to widen parts of a narrow 100 meter stretch that they were unable to pass through without their air cylinders becoming jammed. |

Hero dog suffers swollen snout after saving owner from rattlesnake bite Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:46 AM PDT When his owner almost stepped on a rattlesnake during an early morning hike near their home in Arizona, Todd, the golden retriever, knew exactly what to do. The six-month old puppy jumped in front of Paula Godwin. Instead of Ms Godwin's legs, the venomous fangs sank into his snout. The grateful owner posted the story of their snake encounter on Facebook, alongside photographs of Todd's swollen features. "As we were walking down the hill I literally almost stepped on a rattlesnake. But my hero of a puppy Todd saved me," she wrote. Paula Godwin's post quickly went viral "He jumped right in front of my leg where I surely would have got bit. This is what a hero looks like." Her saviour was yelping in pain after the bite, so she scooped the dog up in her arms and set off to a nearby animal hospital with her other dog copper. Todd was given a shot of anti-venom and allowed home to recover after 12 hours. "Please say a little prayer for my sweet hero," wrote Ms Godwin. Todd is making a good recovery, even if he remains a little sore Credit: Paula Godwin/Facebook The result was an outpouring of love as the story went viral, along with more tales from dog owners of how man's best friend had warded off snake attacks. "What a little hero! Hoping for a speedy recovery for Todd," wrote BriAnne Gleason. Ms Godwin followed up the story by launching a GoFundMe appeal to help other owners who face vet's bills for dogs bitten by rattlesnakes. Snakes | How common are snake attacks in Britain? She said she knew the dangers of snakes but had not spotted the speckled white rattlesnake that was almost invisible as it lay in wait on the road. "This snake did not give any indication he was there," she told the BBC. "Usually if I hear that rattle I am alert and I am backing away." This is Todd. The lawsuit announced by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin was the first by a state seeking to hold oil companies responsible for costs associated with climate change and followed similar cases by several local governments nationally. The lawsuit alleged that various oil companies had created a public nuisance in the state and failed to adequately warn customers, consumers and regulators about the risks posed by their products. |

Birth of a planet captured for first time as gas giant bigger than Jupiter swirls into existence Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:43 AM PDT Even by astronomical standards it is a discovery that is out of this world. Scientists have for the first time witnessed the birth of a planet, a huge gas giant many times the size of Jupiter, swirling into existence 370 light years from Earth. The theory of how gas planets form from a vortex of hydrogen and helium molecules captivated by their own gravity, is now widely accepted by scientists. But it has never been seen before, until now. Today scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg and the SPHERE instrument consortium at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile, released a spectacular image of the birth The planet, currently known as PDS 70b, is shown orbiting within a huge spinning 'protoplanetary disc' of gas and dust, which proves it is continuing to accumulate matter, and so is not yet fully formed. The newborn sits within a 5.4 million year old solar system, orbiting a star called PDS 70 at a distance of 1.8 billion miles. The planet stands out clearly in the image, visible as a bright point to the right of the blackened centre. The dark region at the centre of the image is due to a coronagraph, a mask which blocks the blinding light of the central star and allows astronomers to detect the faint light from the planet. "For our study, we selected PDS 70, a star that was already suspected of having a young planet circling around it," says Miriam Keppler, doctoral student at MPIA. "These discs around young stars are the birthplaces of planets, but so far only a handful of observations have detected hints of baby planets in them. Space exploration | Recent exciting discoveries "The problem is that until now, most of these planet candidates could just have been features in the disc." This glimpse of the dust-shrouded birth of a planet was only possible because of ESO's SPHERE instrument, which studies exoplanets and discs around nearby stars using a technique known as high-contrast imaging. Using the instrument, astronomers were able measure the brightness of the planet at different wavelengths, and find out its composition. It is located roughly three billion kilometres from the central star, roughly equivalent to the distance between Uranus and the Sun. The planet takes about 120 years to orbit its host star. Spectral analysis shows PDS 70 b is a giant gas planet, with a mass a few times that of Jupiter and a surface temperature of around 1,000C, making it much hotter than any planet in our own solar system. Signs of life in our Solar System Thomas Henning, director at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and leader of the teams, summarises the scientific adventure: "After more than a decade of enormous efforts to build this high-tech machine, now SPHERE enables us to reap the harvest with the discovery of baby planets." To date, astronomers have discovered around 3,800 exoplanets outside of the solar system but have never seen one being born. "The results give us a new window onto the complex and poorly-understood early stages of planetary evolution," said Dr André Müller, leader of the second team to investigate the young planet. "We needed to observe a planet in a young star's disc to really understand the processes behind planet formation." |
