Three injured in knife attack 'terror incident' in London metro Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:53 PM PST A man with a knife stabbed another in an east London metro station on Saturday evening, reportedly screaming "this is for Syria", before police used a stun gun on the attacker and detained him. "We are treating this as a terrorist incident," Richard Walton, who leads the London police's Counter Terrorism Command, said in a statement. Police were called to reports of a number of people stabbed at the Leytonstone Underground station in east London and a man threatening other people with a knife. |
London Tube stabbings 'terrorist incident': police Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:08 PM PST British police are investigating as a "terrorist incident" the stabbing of three people at a London Underground train station on Saturday, which left a pool of blood in the ticket hall. One eyewitness at Leytonstone station shouted "You're no Muslim" at the lone male suspect as he was pinned down by police officers, amateur video footage showed. Britain's Counter-Terrorism Command is investigating the stabbings. |

Russia accuses US of cover-up over IS oil smuggling to Turkey Posted: 05 Dec 2015 12:40 PM PST Russia's defence ministry on Saturday accused the United States of turning a blind eye to the trafficking of oil into Turkey from Syrian areas under Islamic State control, after Washington called the amounts involved insignificant. "When US officials say they don't see how the terrorists' oil is smuggled to Turkey... it smells badly of a desire to cover up these acts," the ministry said on its Facebook page. "The declarations of the Pentagon and the State Department seem like a theatre of the absurd," the statement added, suggesting that Washington "watch the videos taken by its (own) drones which have recently been three times as numerous over the Turkey-Syria border and above the oil zones". |
IS claim of latest US gun massacre caps year of danger signs Posted: 05 Dec 2015 12:15 PM PST The Islamic State group's claim to have inspired this week's San Bernardino massacre raises the question of what kind of threat it poses after a year which has seen record numbers of alleged jihadists arrested in the United States. Much is unclear about the motivation of the young Muslim couple who allegedly attacked the husband's co-workers at a workplace holiday party in San Bernardino, California on Wednesday, killing 14. This came as a surprise to many as the nondescript target was not a symbolic site and the couple -- recent parents Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 29 -- are not thought to have been on any watch list. |
Hollande, Cameron agree to boost cooperation against IS: Elysee Posted: 05 Dec 2015 11:20 AM PST French President Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron have agreed to "intensify their cooperation" in the fight against Islamic State jihadists, Hollande's office said in a statement Saturday. The two leaders spoke by phone, with Hollande congratulating Cameron on winning a recent vote in the British parliament to start bombing IS targets in Syria, the French presidency said. "The two leaders agreed to further intensify their cooperation in the fight against Daesh (IS) both in the Syrian campaign and in the exchange of information," the Elysee Palace said. |
Fallon says air raids on IS will make Britain 'safer' Posted: 05 Dec 2015 10:09 AM PST British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said on Saturday that Royal Air Force strikes against the Islamic State group will make British streets safer. Fallon was speaking to personnel from 903 Expeditionary Wing at Akrotiri RAF base in Cyprus, from where daily missions are flown against IS. Fallon said the decision will make the streets "in Britain safer, as we take the fight to where Daesh (IS) plot attacks on our people and our allies". |
The countries where ISIS finds support, in two charts Posted: 05 Dec 2015 10:05 AM PST The San Bernardino, Calif., massacre is bringing even more attention to Islamic State's frighteningly rapid global growth, and where around the world it has found traction — not just in terms of territory ... |

Iraq summons Turkey's ambassador over troop deployment near Mosul Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:42 AM PST By Ahmed Rasheed and Ayla Jean Yackley BAGHDAD/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Iraq's Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador on Saturday to demand that Turkey immediately withdraw hundreds of troops deployed in recent days to northern Iraq, near the Islamic State-controlled city of Mosul. The ministry said in a statement the Turkish forces had entered Iraqi territory without the knowledge of the central government in Baghdad, and that Iraq considered such presence "a hostile act". |
Iraq calls on Turkey to 'immediately' withdraw troops Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:35 AM PST Baghdad demanded Saturday the immediate withdrawal of forces it said Turkey illegally sent into Iraq, which is struggling to assert its sovereignty while receiving foreign assistance against the Islamic State group. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu played down the military activity as "routine rotation activity" and "reinforcement against security risks", while also labelling any misinterpretation as a "provocation". The Kurdish regional government -- which has forces in the area where the Turkish troops deployed and close ties with Ankara -- indicated that Turkey aimed to expand a camp near the main IS hub of Mosul. |
Three Turkish security officers killed in clashes with Kurd militants Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:09 AM PST Three members of the Turkish security forces were killed on Saturday in clashes with militants in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, security forces said. Hundreds of people have died since the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) abandoned its two-and-a-half-year ceasefire in July and the Turkish air force began striking PKK targets in northern Iraq. Two gendarmes were killed when militants opened fire on their vehicle in the town of Cizre, near the Syrian and Turkish borders, officials said. |
Iraq summons Turkey's ambassador over deployment in northern Iraq Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST Iraq's Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad on Saturday to protest at the deployment of Turkish forces near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and demand their immediate withdrawal. The ministry said in a statement that the Turkish forces had entered Iraqi territory without the knowledge of the central government in Baghdad, and that Iraq considered such presence "a hostile act". |
Report links Paris militant group to Britain, police cautious Posted: 05 Dec 2015 08:48 AM PST The militant network behind last month's attacks in Paris had links to people in Britain, the Wall Street Journal has said in a report that British police described on Saturday as "speculative". Several people suspected of having connections to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Islamic State militant and alleged ringleader of the Nov. 13 attacks, are based in Britain, according to two unidentified Western officials the Journal cited late on Friday. The officials told the Journal those people, including some of Moroccan heritage, were based in the Birmingham area in central England, about 120 miles (190 km) from London. |
Obama says 'we will not be terrorized' after California shooting Posted: 05 Dec 2015 08:29 AM PST U.S. President Barack Obama vowed on Saturday that federal investigators would find out what motivated a married couple in California to shoot and kill 14 people, and he asked Americans to stand united after the attacks. Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook were killed in a shootout with police after the Wednesday attack during a holiday party at a social services agency in San Bernardino, California. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the massacre as an "act of terrorism" after Malik was believed to have pledged allegiance to a leader of the militant group Islamic State. |
U.S., allies launch 23 strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria: U.S. military Posted: 05 Dec 2015 08:03 AM PST The United States and its allies targeted Islamic State with 12 strikes in Iraq and 11 in Syria on Friday, the U.S. military said. IS hails California attackers as 'soldiers of caliphate' Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:25 AM PST The Islamic State group on Saturday hailed the perpetrators of a mass shooting in the US state of California as "soldiers" of its caliphate, without explicitly claiming the deadly attack. "Two soldiers of the Khilafah (caliphate) executed an attack on the Inland Regional Centre in San Bernardino, California," the IS radio broadcast said in English. IS refers to the swathe of territory it controls in Syria and Iraq as an Islamic caliphate. |
For one family fleeing Syria, a haven in New England Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST For a man whose store was blown up and who has fled falling artillery shells, life in the United States now offers a new challenge: the political rhetoric of an election year. Zaid Alnasar and his family were the first Syrian refugees to settle in Westfield, Mass. They are, in many ways, invisible to the community around them. Interviewed twice this fall before the political fallout from the Paris attacks, the Alnasars regard their new life in America as a "safe haven," as Mr. Alnasar puts it. |

"Two followers of Islamic State attacked several days ago a center in San Bernadino in California, opening fire inside the center, leading to the deaths of 14 people and wounding more than 20 others" the group's daily broadcast al-Bayan said, giving information already widely reported. U.S. shale oil producers pummeled after OPEC decision Posted: 04 Dec 2015 06:27 PM PST OPEC ministers, who control a third of the world's oil supply, ended their meeting in Vienna on a discordant note, unable to decide as a group how much it should pump in aggregate. It appeared for a while OPEC would raise its current 30 million barrels per day (bpd) cap on production, but negotiations broke down after Iran said it would not accept any limits until it emerges from Western-imposed sanctions. Iraq's oil minister echoed those sentiments, asking after the meeting why OPEC members should accept a production cap if non-OPEC oil producers do not have one. |
Assad's departure not necessary before political transition: France's Fabius Posted: 04 Dec 2015 04:21 PM PST The departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is no longer necessary before any political transition in the war-torn country, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in an interview published Saturday. The comments mark a softening of Paris' position on the Syrian president as attention turns to the fight against the Islamic State group which staged a series of bloody attacks on the French capital last month, killing 130. "The fight against Daesh is crucial, but it will only be totally effective if all the Syrian and regional forces are united," Fabius told the French regional newspaper Le Progres, using an Arabic acronym for IS. |
