New security measures (and massive lines) announced for all flights to the US Posted: 28 Jun 2017 01:26 PM PDT 180 airlines flying over 300,000 people a day into the US will have to comply with new "enhanced security measures" for electronic devices, the Department for Homeland Security announced on Wednesday. The new security measures, which have not been described in detail, will need to be implemented at speed by the airlines. Passengers flying on any airline that does not implement the new security measures will not be able to bring anything bigger than a cellphone under the new regulations. The new measures seem to be the ultimate evolution of a laptop ban that the US announced back in March, which affected passengers on most airlines flying from the Middle East. The new security measures will affect carry-on and checked luggage, the DHS confirmed, but should now allow those airlines affected by the laptop ban to allow passengers to carry laptops on once again, provided the new security measures are implemented. Those security measures have not been specified, but the DHS says that it will be a mixture of visible and behind-the-scenes changes. Among the changes is likely to be deeper scrutiny of individual passengers, as well as more detailed searches of electronic devices. The DHS said that passengers "may want to prepare for a bit more extensive screening process," although an official added that "intensive doesn't always mean slower." Logical additional screening methods could include routine swabs of electronic devices to look for explosive residue -- something that's already done on a case-by-case basis -- as well as requiring passengers in some cases to power up laptops and demonstrate that they're working. According to reporting from multiple news outlets, Israeli intelligence idenitified an ISIS plot to use a laptop bomb to attack an airliner several months ago. That intelligence was behind the laptop ban in March. The source of that intelligence is also reported to have been leaked to Russia by President Trump during a White House meeting.

Experts say Petya ransomware is just a ‘test’ for something much worse Posted: 28 Jun 2017 08:08 AM PDT A new ransomware attack, modeled after the recent WannaCry exploit, has hit thousands of organizations and users worldwide. But according to a handful of security experts, it's only the tip of the iceberg. The ransomware attack, which encrypts users' files and demands a ransom to unlock them, could just be a test attack, or cover for more malicious damage being done by the virus. ""I'm willing to say with at least moderate confidence that this was a deliberate, malicious, destructive attack or perhaps a test disguised as ransomware. The best way to put it is that Petya's payment infrastructure is a fecal theater," security researcher Nicholas Weaver told KrebsOnSecurity. His sentiments were echoed by "the grugq," an anonymous security researcher who blogs about security issues. He highlights the same thing as Weaver, namely that the payment infrastructure for the virus is poorly designed. Normally, ransomware viruses demand payment in Bitcoin to a Bitcoin account that is unique to every victim. That makes it harder to track the Bitcoin, or for researchers to work out the identity of the attackers. Communication is normally done through the obfuscated Tor protocol, which relies on a distributed web of servers and is impossible for one organization to shut down. In this instance, however, the attackers had one single email address listed for communication. It was quickly shut down by Posteo, the German ISP responsible for the email account. That means that victims will not be able to communicate with the attackers to organize payment or receive decryption codes, effectively meaning any encrypted files will be lost forever, if backups aren't available. "If this well engineered and highly crafted worm was meant to generate revenue, this payment pipeline was possibly the worst of all options (short of "send a personal cheque to: Petya Payments, PO Box …")," the grugq explains. It's suspicious that such a well-designed piece of ransomware would have such a bad payment system -- unless, of course, the aim was never to make money. "This is definitely not designed to make money. This is designed to spread fast and cause damage, with a plausibly deniable cover of "ransomware.", the grugq continues. Weaver confirmed this to Krebs, saying that Petya "appears to have been well engineered to be destructive while masquerading as a ransomware strain." Attributing blame for cyberattacks is always difficult, but the high concentration of Ukranian victims -- the attack was originally distributed through Ukranian tax software MeDoc -- raises questions about potential Russian involvement.

The downtime is slamming the coasts particularly hard, with huge numbers of reports coming in from both the East Coast as well as Southern California. The issue appears to be linked to the cloud hosting service Fastly, which supports the backends of all these major web destinations, and has been dealing with a "global event." The error manifests itself in failed page loads and a number of different errors ranging from "Maximum threads" to simple "Could not load" notifications. "Fastly is reporting a global event on our network at this time; multiple teams are responding and investigating," the company's first notice of downtime reads. The company followed up by noting that the it identified the issue and was working on implementing a fix, while monitoring the results. The company notes on its Customers page that it supports many of the sites currently dealing with page load errors and other issues, including NYT, Pinterest, Reddit, Wired, and Business Insider. When the unseen companies that support the entire structure of major websites like these experience downtime it can be a serious issue for everyone involved.
