The so-called "deconfliction" talks came after Russia started bombing in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, further complicating the four-and-a-half-year conflict.

Protesters participate in an anti-Keystone pipeline demonstration in New York's Foley Square on November 18, 2014An exhausting seven-year wait for US President Barack Obama to approve, or not, a controversial North American pipeline has not soured Canadians' view of their southern neighbors, a study said Tuesday. The nonpartisan Washington-based think tank cited a telephone survey of 1,004 Canadians in May of this year that showed 81 percent of them would maintain or reinforce Canada's relationship with the United States. Furthermore 68 percent said they have a favorable view of the United States -- a sentiment that has held fairly steady over the years, apart from a dip after the start of the Iraq War in 2003 and a low point (55 percent) in 2007.

Toyota says it does not know how ISIS obtained the vehicles and is "supporting" the inquiry led by the Terror Financing unit of the Treasury Department -- part of a broad U.S. effort to prevent Western-made goods from ending up in the hands of the terror group. "We briefed Treasury on Toyota's supply chains in the Middle East and the procedures that Toyota has in place to protect supply chain integrity," said Ed Lewis, Toyota's Washington-based director of public policy and communications.

Israel, Palestinians play down talk of third intifada

Posted: 06 Oct 2015 08:11 AM PDT

By Luke Baker and Richard Mably JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The entrances to Jerusalem's walled Old City are sealed off by Israeli police and the streets of East Jerusalem are littered with barricades, burning trash and the detritus of battles between stone-throwing Palestinians and Israeli forces. The scenes after 10 days of violence in which four Israelis and three Palestinians have been killed and 170 injured are evocative of the two Palestinian uprisings, or intifadas, against Israeli occupation in the late 1980s and early 2000s. A new intifada would further complicate efforts by world leaders to resolve conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and there is little appetite to re-engage in peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians after many failures in the past.

Egypt hails campaign against Islamic State affiliate. Could it backfire?

Egypt is working quickly to thwart what experts say is a change in tactics by Sinai-based, pro-Islamic State jihadists who have been striking deeper into Egyptian territory in order to make their presence known in Cairo. To prevent what has been a local insurgency from escalating into a wider jihadist war, and giving the so-called Islamic State (IS) a foothold in Egypt, the Egyptian military for a month has engaged in a sweeping offensive in the Sinai Peninsula that it says has killed or imprisoned more than 1,000 militants. Following Russia's unexpected move to launch air strikes in Syria last week, Jens Stoltenberg said NATO also had reports of a substantial Russian military build-up there, including ground troops and ships in the eastern Mediterranean.
