Pope Francis set to pray with Egypt's Christians Posted: 28 Apr 2017 11:59 PM PDT Pope Francis is set to lead a mass for Egypt's small Catholic community on Saturday as he visits the country in support of its Christians following a series of deadly church bombings. Egypt's Catholic community is estimated at about 272,000. "By coming to Egypt, the pope is showing us that nothing can prevent us from praying, including terrorism," he said, referring to recent church bombings. |
Military plane crashes in Cuba killing all eight on board Posted: 29 Apr 2017 01:49 PM PDT A military airplane crashed into a mountain in Cuba's north-western region of Artemisa on Saturday morning, killing all eight personnel on board, the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces said. The aircraft, a twin-engined turboprop Antonov AN-26, had taken off at 6:38 a.m. (0638 ET) from Playa Baracoa, just outside Havana, and crashed into the Loma de la Pimienta mountain some 80 km (50 miles) westwards. "The eight military personnel on board, including the crew, died," the ministry said in a statement published by state-run media. |

Witnessing death: AP reporters describe problem executions Posted: 29 Apr 2017 01:30 AM PDT The sedative midazolam is supposed to prevent condemned prisoners from suffering while they die, but opponents say several problematic executions involving the drug are evidence that it does not work consistently. They raised new concerns after an execution Thursday in Arkansas left the prisoner convulsing and pressing against his restraints. |
Turkey blocks Wikipedia access, bans TV dating shows Posted: 29 Apr 2017 11:20 AM PDT Turkey on Saturday blocked all access to Wikipedia and banned television dating shows, adding to fears of a crackdown after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's victory in a referendum on enhancing his powers. The government also dismissed almost 4,000 public officials in the latest wave of the purge under the over nine-month state of emergency that has followed last July's failed coup. Erdogan, who has dominated Turkey since 2003 as premier and now president, narrowly won the April 16 referendum on enhancing his powers which supporters believe will lead to better government but critics say creates one man rule. |
Posted: 30 Apr 2017 04:56 AM PDT The former US Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden has described the moment he claims he shot the al-Qaeda leader dead. Robert O'Neill, who claims to have fired the fatal bullets, has for the first time published a detailed account of the mission that lead to the 9/11 mastermind being gunned down in a secure compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in May 2011. In a dramatic extract from his new book, The Operator, published in the Mirror, the former Seal described the moment he fired two shots at Bin Laden and "split open" his head. |
MIT invented a robot that can 3D-print an entire building Posted: 29 Apr 2017 09:00 AM PDT 3D printing has slowly gone from a curious novelty to a totally viable option for creating all kinds of useful things, from chocolate to athletic shoes, and now MIT has invented a way to use the technology to print buildings, too. Given that most 3D printing takes place inside a sealed box, it might be a bit hard to imagine exactly how a structure could be built in such a way, but as you'll see it can most definitely be done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zt_3Gs1ksg The peculiar system is essentially a robotically-controlled arm that sprays an expanding foam which dries hard — kind of like the gap-filling foam you'd buy at a hardware store. The system's sensors detect the hight at which the arm sprays the foam, gradually lifting itself higher as the walls of the structure take shape. In the demo video, the robot is shown building a circular structure with double-thick foam walls supported by internal bracing. The dome was completed in less than 14 hours, which is pretty speedy when you consider it was 12 feet tall and 50 feet across. The system can even account for doorways, can build walls at varying thicknesses to account for specific climates, and could potentially use other materials which it would harvest from the surrounding area if deployed in a remote area. MIT even notes that, once it's built to be completely autonomous, it would be a great option for sending to the moon or Mars where traditional building materials wouldn't necessarily be available. |

Italian elected new leader of Order of Malta Posted: 29 Apr 2017 10:37 AM PDT A 72-year-old Italian medieval art expert was on Saturday elected to head the Order of Malta, the world's oldest chivalric order. Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto takes the reins for one year after Pope Francis ordered the resignation in January of the Order's Grand Master, Britain's Matthew Festing, following a power struggle. The influential Order of Malta, founded in Jerusalem and recognised by the pope in 1113, operates in around 120 countries and is one of the biggest landowners in Italy. |

Notorious Afghan warlord calls for peace in first public speech Posted: 29 Apr 2017 02:52 AM PDT By Ahmad Sultan MEHTAR LAM, Afghanistan (Reuters) - In his first public speech since signing a peace deal with the Afghan government, one of Afghanistan's most notorious warlords on Saturday called for the Taliban to stop fighting and begin negotiations. "I invite you to join the peace caravan and stop the pointless, meaningless and unholy war," Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said to a gathering of his followers and Afghan politicians in Laghman province, east of the capital, Kabul. "I want a free, proud, independent and Islamic Afghanistan," he said. |

Leonardo DiCaprio used a standard, office file folder for his climate march sign, lol Posted: 29 Apr 2017 03:43 PM PDT Look, let me start by saying Leonardo DiCaprio has done a lot to combat climate change. He produced a climate change documentary titled Before the Flood that dropped in 2016. He has a foundation "dedicated to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth's inhabitants." The foundation has given $61 million to causes that align with that mission statement. He talks about climate change all the time. And, also, he was among the ~200,000 people in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to protest a White House that very much does not share his (scientifically valid) concern for the damage people are doing to the climate. SEE ALSO: Trump's big EPA website change should make you furious It's just kind of funny that the man who has done all of the above couldn't get a sign for the protest that was bigger than a piece of computer paper. Like, at what point did DiCaprio realize he wanted a sign? Did he wake up in a hotel and say, "Shit, I forgot people were going to write things on posters and walk around with them at this thing I'm going to today," and then he went to the nearest Staples, a Staples with markers but without posterboard? Did the hotel have a green and a red marker and a file folder somewhere? Does he keep these things in a bag? Anyway, it's just funny. China deports U.S. citizen convicted of espionage Posted: 29 Apr 2017 10:30 AM PDT China has deported a U.S. citizen who was convicted of espionage this week after being held without trial for two years, removing a source of friction between Washington and Beijing. Sandy Phan-Gillis was arrested in March 2015 while about to leave mainland China for the Chinese-ruled, former Portuguese colony of Macau. A court on Tuesday ordered her deportation after sentencing her to three-and-a-half years in prison for espionage. |

Pope tells Egypt mass that dialogue can battle extremism Posted: 29 Apr 2017 07:41 AM PDT Pope Francis appealed for dialogue to battle extremism as he addressed thousands of faithful on Saturday during a visit to Egypt to promote reconciliation with Muslims and support its embattled Christians. "The only fanaticism believers can have is that of charity," the pope said at a mass for Egypt's Catholics. The mass came on the second and last day of Francis's visit, which saw him plead for tolerance and peace on Friday as he visited a Coptic church bombed by IS in December. |

25 years after Los Angeles riots, progress and distrust live side by side Posted: 29 Apr 2017 01:45 PM PDT By Alex Dobuzinskis and Dana Feldman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Twenty-five years after the acquittal of four Los Angeles police officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King and the deadly riots that followed the verdict, an undercurrent of distrust pulses through a city that says it worked hard at police reform. Long before the advent of the Black Lives Matter movement, the name Rodney King became synonymous with the use of excessive force in policing minority groups. King, then 25, was battered by a squad of white officers after a traffic stop in March 1991, an incident caught in graphic detail on a bystander's video. |

Donald Trump is losing engagement on Twitter, analysis shows Posted: 29 Apr 2017 02:51 PM PDT One hundred days into his time in office, the "Twitter President" seems to have lost some of his mojo. Donald Trump's tweets received less engagement in his second 50 days in office than in his first, according to an analysis by the Associated Press and media analytics nonprofit Cortico. In the first half of his term, more than 32 per cent of the President's tweets averaged around 60,000 combined retweets, replies, and quote tweets. |
China says factory activity expands at slower pace in April Posted: 29 Apr 2017 11:37 PM PDT China's factory activity continued to expand in April, albeit at a slower-than-expected pace, official data showed on Sunday, adding to signs of stabilisation in the world's second largest economy. The purchasing manager's index (PMI), which gauges conditions at factories and mines, stood at 51.2 in April, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said, down from a near five-year high of 51.8 in March. Analysts predicted a softening growth momentum in this year's second quarter. |

In a bruising contest against pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron, Le Pen is hoping to broaden her base enough to win the decisive second-round vote, despite polls suggesting she is some 20 points behind. The anti-immigration Le Pen told reporters that she and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan -- who lost in the election's first round with 4.7 percent of the vote -- shared a "common project that we will promote together". |

Philippine military says high-ranking Abu Sayyaf member killed Posted: 29 Apr 2017 12:17 AM PDT Philippine government troops have killed a senior member of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group instrumental in a spree of bombings and kidnappings in the country's south, the military said on Saturday. Alhabsy Misaya was killed in a shootout with marines on Friday in the province of Sulu, a stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, a group linked to Islamic State and known for its kidnappings and beheading captives when ransom demands are not met. The military said Misaya had been involved in violent activities for more than 15 years and was "considered to be one of the most notorious kidnappers in the southern Philippines". |
French amphibious carrier visits Japan ahead of Pacific show of power Posted: 29 Apr 2017 02:49 AM PDT By Nobuhiro Kubo SASEBO (Reuters) - As tension spikes on the Korean peninsula, a French amphibious assault carrier sailed into Japan's naval base of Sasebo on Saturday ahead of drills that risk upsetting China, which faces U.S. pressure to rein in North Korea's arms programs. The Mistral will lead exercises next month near Guam, along with forces from Japan, the United States and Britain, practicing amphibious landings around Tinian, an island about 2,500 km (1,553 miles) south of the Japanese capital of Tokyo. |
Posted: 30 Apr 2017 07:49 AM PDT Fox News has attracted controversy after it posted a graphic on Twitter about unemployment rates which users have pointed out is "misleading". On the surface, it seems uncomplicated, comparing the rate of US unemployment under four presidents on the 100th day of their first administration: Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton. The graphic appears to present the Republicans - Mr Trump and Mr Bush - favourably, showing the jobless rate after the first three months of their presidencies stood at 4.5 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively. |
