The B-52 Stratofortress aircraft, which arrived in Qatar, were based in Saudi Arabia and last flown operationally in May 2006 as part of the war in Afghanistan, air force officials said. An unknown number of B-52s will be based at Al Udeid air base in Qatar, replacing the B-1 Lancer bombers that were withdrawn from the fight in Syria in February, to undergo maintenance and upgrading. "The B-52 demonstrates our continued resolve to apply persistent pressure on Daesh and defend the region in any future contingency," said Air Force Lieutenant General Charles Brown, commander of US Air Forces Central Command, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS, Al Jazeera reported. |

Philippine militants wound 22 soldiers in clash after freeing Italian Posted: 09 Apr 2016 04:59 AM PDT Some 22 Philippine soldiers were wounded Saturday in a firefight with Islamic militants, the military said, a day after the release of a retired Italian priest taken hostage in the Muslim-populated south of the country. The Philippine security forces have been hunting the militant Abu Sayyaf group for two weeks in an operation launched across the southern Basilan and Jolo islands -- two remote strongholds of the rebels in the mainly Catholic Asian nation. The army soldiers were injured when clashes broke out early Saturday with up to 120 Abu Sayyaf gunmen in a remote rural village on Basilan, regional military spokesman Major Filemon Tan told reporters. |
Freed Italian hostage leaves Philippines hospital Posted: 09 Apr 2016 02:01 AM PDT A retired Italian priest held hostage for six months by suspected Islamic militants left a Philippine hospital Saturday a day after his ordeal ended, looking frail though officials said he was in good health. The authorities found him late Friday aboard a ferry docked on the remote island of Jolo, the main stronghold of the militant Abu Sayyaf group, some 950 kilometres (590 miles) south of Manila. The Italian government chartered the private plane for the former Catholic missionary, Tan told AFP, but Philippine officials would not say where he was taken. |
