Islamic State using birth control to keep supply of sex slaves: NY Times

The Islamic State is using several forms of contraception to maintain its supply of sex slaves, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing interviews with more than three dozen Yazidi women who escaped from the militant group. The New York Times reported that Islamic State used "oral and injectable contraception, and sometimes both" to ensure that the women did not become pregnant and could be passed among the fighters. Islamic State militants consider the Yazidis to be devil-worshippers.

U.S., allies conduct 17 strikes against Islamic State: U.S. military

The United States and its allies on Friday targeted Islamic State militants in Iraq with nine strikes and eight in Syria, the U.S. military said on Saturday. Five of the strikes in Iraq were near Ramadi, hitting three separate Islamic State tactical units and an Islamic State fighting position. In Syria, four of the strikes were near Mar'a, hitting 10 Islamic State fighting positions and two weapons caches.

A large number of rockets were fired at Taza on Wednesday from the nearby village of Bashir, which is held by the jihadists.

Jets targeted sites at Qandil, Metina, Avasin, Haftanin and Basyan used by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, the armed forces said. Separately, a bomb blast blamed on PKK militants hit an armored police vehicle near Turkey's border with Iraq on Friday, Turkish officials said.

Britain sends more troops to train Iraqis fighting IS

British jets have been striking IS targets in Iraq and SyriaBritain said Saturday it was sending more troops to Iraq to bolster its mission training up the armed forces taking on the Islamic State jihadist group. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said a further 30 troops would be deployed to provide training in logistics and bridge-building, as well as specialist medical staff. The move would take the total number of British personnel on training missions inside Iraq to 300.

Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr returned to Iraq in 2011, after a self-imposed exile in IranIraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr on Saturday urged his followers to ramp up pro-reform rallies by setting up tents in front of Baghdad's 'Green Zone' and camping out until their demands are met. "I make a historical call to every honest, reform-loving Iraqi to rise up and start a new phase in the peaceful popular protests," the statement said. Sadr urged protesters to stay there for the 10 remaining days of an ultimatum he gave the government last month.
