Former US President George H. W. Bush has reportedly broken his silence on his son's presidency and the Iraq and Afghanistan warsFormer president George H.W. Bush has slammed Dick Cheney as an "iron-ass" and Donald Rumsfeld as an "arrogant fellow," in a new book in which he vents publicly for the first time about their influence on his son George's presidency. Bush, president from 1989-1993, has mostly been silent on issues regarding his son's presidency and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With concerns over security mounting, a number of European airlines readied to bring home thousands of tourists from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where the ill-fated plane departed from last Saturday. "I think there is a possibility that there was a bomb on board and we are taking that very seriously," Obama told a US radio station, while emphasising it was too early to say for sure.

Germany to speed up repatriations as migrants near million mark

Migrants walk to a first registration point of the German federal police after they crossed the Austrian-German border in the small Bavarian village of Simbach, southern Germany, on November 2, 2015Germany said Thursday it would speed up the repatriation of rejected asylum-seekers as new figures showed the country inching closer to the million-migrant mark and EU forecasts showed even more people seeking refuge in Europe next year. After weeks of infighting in Germany's ruling coalition over how to absorb record numbers of migrants Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of two allied parties agreed that those deemed economic migrants -- from countries not at war -- would be sent home within three weeks. The coalition leaders also agreed to set up three to five "reception centres" for asylum-seekers deemed on arrival to have little chance of being allowed to stay -- a move aimed at making it easier to repatriate those denied refugee status.

IS bomb on Russia plane would herald new phase in conflict

(Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations via AP, File)BEIRUT (AP) — At this stage, there is no hard evidence. But reports from the U.S. and Britain suggesting an Islamic State group bomb may have caused the Russian plane crash in Egypt are raising the alarm among experts, who say such an act would be a frightening change in tactics by the extremist group.

Americans Agree on Little About ISIS – Except the U.S. Is Losing the War

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

There's no mystery to why members of Congress have avoided having to take a formal stand on the U.S. war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Despite some brave talk from the Obama administration and the Pentagon, the yearlong effort to "degrade and ultimately defeat" the Islamic terrorists is going badly. While few Republican or Democratic lawmakers were pleased with the Obama's announcement a week ago that it would send at least 50 U.S. troops into Syria to oversee military operations against ISIS, there is virtually no chance that lawmakers will come off the sidelines and finally pass new war powers legislation that leaves their fingerprints on an increasingly dubious U.S. policy in the Middle East.

Islamic State Egypt branch suspected in plane crash remains elusive

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 01:45 PM PST

By Michael Georgy and Ahmed Mohamed Hassan CAIRO (Reuters) - The Islamic State branch suspected of bringing down a Russian airliner in Egypt had eluded a security dragnet by operating in secretive cells inspired by a leader who used to import clothes for a living, Egyptian intelligence officials say. Western officials are increasingly pointing the finger of blame at Sinai Province, which has focused on killing Egyptian soldiers and police since the military toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests. If a bomb knocked Airbus A321 out of the sky, that would challenge Egypt's assertions that it had brought under control militants who have carried out high-profile attacks on senior government officials and Western targets.

Did ISIS bomb Russian aircraft over Sinai?

It is "more likely than not a terrorist bomb" that brought down a St. Petersburg-bound flight with 224 aboard in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday. US officials have told CNN that intelligence points to Islamic State (IS) or its affiliates placing a bomb on the Russian plane, which flight data shows broke apart in midair, leaving no survivors. Those officials emphasized that the US intelligence community has drawn no official conclusions, nor have US officials examined forensic evidence from the crash site. All indicators point to Islamic State attack on Russian plane: U.S. lawmaker

U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said on Thursday evidence so far indicates there was an Islamic State bomb attack on the Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. McCaul acknowledged another theory - that the plane's tail had been worked on several years ago and may have broken off or otherwise failed - had not been ruled out. "But I think the more likely scenario where all indicators seem to be pointing, is that this was an ISIS attack with an explosive device in the airplane," McCaul told Fox News, using a common acronym for the militant group.

People light a candle as they arrive at Dvortsovaya Square to commemorate victims of the air crash in Egypt in St. PetersburgBy Paul Sandle LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said on Thursday there was a significant possibility that Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate was behind a suspected bomb attack on a Russian airliner that killed 224 people in the Sinai Peninsula. Russia dismissed the claim as speculation and Egypt said there was no indication so far that a bomb was to blame. The topic is sensitive for Russia, whose warplanes have launched raids against Islamic State in Syria, and for Egypt, which depends heavily on revenues from tourism.
