Russia circulated a draft resolution to the 15-member U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that would call on states involved in military efforts against Islamic State and other militants to coordinate with the countries where they are operating. In the case of Syria, this would mean cooperating military activities with President Bashar al-Assad's government.

By Louis Charbonneau and Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem on Friday questioned the value of political negotiations and said air strikes against militants in his country are useless if they are not coordinated with his government. The U.S.-led coalition, created to combat the jihadi threat from Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, has been wrong footed by the Russian jets pounding the rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and by an influx of Iranian forces. The question on everyone's mind is: will the United States and its European and regional Sunni allies intervene to stop President Vladimir Putin from reversing the gains made by mainstream Syrian rebels after more than four years of war?

U.S. seen unlikely to defend Syrian rebels from Russian strikes

Posted: 01 Oct 2015 05:40 PM PDT

By Matt Spetalnick and Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Already out-gunned and out-manned in Syria's civil war, U.S.-backed rebels are facing a new and possibly even more serious threat to their survival: Russian air strikes that Washington appears reluctant to thwart. The Obama administration – blindsided by the speed of Moscow's direct intervention and a Russian target list that included CIA-trained fighters – made clear on Thursday that the it had no desire to increase the risk of an air clash between the former Cold War foes. While Washington took pains to insist it still considered the "moderate" opposition vital to Syria's future and was not abandoning them, withholding U.S. air cover could further jeopardize beleaguered rebel forces.
