Oil prices surge on output cut pledge, US-China deal Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:38 AM PST Oil prices soared on Monday after Russia and Saudi Arabia renewed a pact to cap output, while the US agreed to halt raising tariffs on Chinese imports, stalling a trade row that many feared could hit demand for the commodity. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday he and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "have agreed to extend our agreement" to limit production as prices slump on global markets. An existing deal committing OPEC and non-members to cuts expires this year. |

Saudi crown prince visits Algiers without meeting president Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:59 AM PST Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika called off a meeting with visiting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday because of ill health, the national news agency APS reported. Bouteflika postponed a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in February 2017 and was last seen on Algerian television on November 1 laying a wreath at the country's independence war memorial. Prince Mohammed, on his first foreign tour since the October 2 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, held talks instead with Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, Algeria's presidency said, during a low-key visit that was kept largely out of the media spotlight. |

Graham: CIA Briefing Confirmed That Crown Prince Ordered Khashoggi’s Murder Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:16 AM PST Senator Lindsey Graham said Tuesday that a briefing with CIA director Gina Haspel confirmed his initial belief that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered and dismembered at the direction of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. "I left the briefing with high confidence that my initial confidence is correct," Graham told reporters after exiting the briefing. Graham, who led the bipartisan call for the White House to allow Haspel to brief lawmakers after she was reportedly barred from a briefing last week, said bin Salman's role in Khashoggi's assassination disqualified him as a potential diplomatic partner to the U.S. |

Mexico's President Stays Silent on Pledge to Scrap $13 Billion Airport Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:48 PM PST It's part of his administration's strategy to placate investors who loaned money for building a new Mexico City hub and have since been told that the project isn't going to happen, sending prices for Mexican assets plummeting as analysts questioned whether the new government is committed to business-friendly policies. Officials on Monday unveiled an offer to buy back as much as $1.8 billion of the securities and create a revenue stream to repay the remaining notes, but it can only happen if a majority of investors agree to scrap the covenants that allow them to demand their money back if the airport is canceled. |

Xi arrives in Portugal to boost trade ties Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:04 AM PST Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Portugal on Tuesday for a two-day visit to boost economic ties, despite concern in some EU capitals over China's growing influence across the continent. The initiative offers loans to build railways, roads and ports across Asia, Europe and Africa. "Portugal is an important hub in the land and maritime silk routes," Xi said. |
German conservative questions future of Russian gas pipeline Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:08 AM PST A key ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday raised questions about the future of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline amid growing concern about Russia's seizure of three Ukrainian ships and their crew off the coast of Russian-annexed Crimea. Juergen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for Merkel's conservatives in parliament, told Reuters that further sanctions against Russia would have to be considered unless diplomatic efforts were able to resolve the conflict. "When diplomatic efforts to ease tensions fail, we cannot ignore the question of whether it is responsible to further increase the dependence of Germany and the European Union on Russia gas," he said. |

Wall Street dives on angst over growth, US-China truce Posted: 04 Dec 2018 02:27 PM PST Wall Street stocks plunged Tuesday on worries about US economic growth and revived doubts about trade wars as the Trump administration sent mixed signals on their detente with China. A day after global stocks rallied on a weekend US-China announcement suspending new tariffs, international markets mostly pulled back as investor focus shifted to the lack of concrete progress in reaching a long-term agreement to the dispute. "Can the US and China really resolve their differences in 90 days?" asked Rodrigo Catril, senior strategist at National Australia Bank. |

Shell to set sector-leading emissions targets after investor pressure Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:16 AM PST Rivals BP and Total have already set short-term targets on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but these are limited to their own operations. Shell's targets, which will be introduced in 2020, will be more extensive with inclusion of the so-called Scope 3 emissions from the burning of fuels sold to millions of customers around the world, the company said. Monday's move marks a change of tack for Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden, who had previously resisted setting hard goals, saying it would be "foolhardy" to expose Shell to legal challenges. |

The United States said the missile launch on Saturday was a violation of a UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, from which Washington has withdrawn. |

Only 10 migrants from the capsized boat survived, all of whom were suffering from severe dehydration, Othman Belbeisi, head of the U.N. migration agency IOM in Libya, said on Twitter. The owner of a beach chalet found the migrants washing up on the shore near the city of Misrata and called authorities, who brought them to the Red Crescent relief service and hospitals, residents said. |
Sri Lanka Court Restrains Rajapaksa Acting as Prime Minister Posted: 04 Dec 2018 12:47 AM PST The court issued its order on Monday after 122 members of Sri Lanka's parliament, who are allied with ousted prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, filed a legal action on Nov. 23 challenging Rajapaksa's authority as prime minister. In a statement emailed on Monday evening, Rajapaksa said he did not accept the appeal court's ruling and would take the matter to the Supreme Court. Wickremesinghe appeared on local television Tuesday to say he was willing to face an election, but that it must be conducted with the legitimate government in place, acting within the constitution and with the consensus of all parties in parliament. |

Grim holiday tidings as Paris businesses count cost of riots Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:14 AM PST President Emmanuel Macron was elected on a promise to burnish France's image on the global stage, but as shops and hotels counted the costs Monday of rioting over the weekend, many fear they won't have much to cheer for Christmas. Violent anti-government protests on Saturday engulfed chic Paris shopping districts, where a police lockdown and vandalism forced many stores to shut. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire met with business representatives Monday to tally the damage from arson and shattered windows, looted shelves and lost revenue as the scenes of urban unrest stopped locals and tourists alike from venturing out. |
