U.S. to sell 34 surveillance drones to allies in South China Sea region Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:40 PM PDT The Trump administration has moved ahead with a surveillance drone sale to four U.S. allies in the South China Sea region as acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Washington will no longer "tiptoe" around Chinese behavior in Asia. Shanahan did not directly name China when making accusations of "actors" destabilizing the region in a speech at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday but went on to say the United States would not ignore Chinese behavior. The Pentagon announced on Friday it would sell 34 ScanEagle drones, made by Boeing Co. to the governments of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam for a total of $47 million. |

Accused Virginia Beach Shooter Wished Co-Worker a ‘Good Day’ Before the Rampage Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:34 PM PDT Jonathan Drake/ReutersWhile police have vowed to utter the name of the suspected Virginia Beach shooter only once out of respect to the victims, many of those who've had personal interactions with long-time city worker DeWayne Craddock will likely have a harder time forgetting it—especially since they say he gave no signs of the impending carnage that would leave 12 of his coworkers dead. Even moments before the shooting broke out just after 4 p.m. on Friday, Craddock wished a co-worker a good day during a chance encounter in the bathroom. "I said, 'How are you doing?' He said he was doing OK," Craddock's former co-worker Joseph Scott told CNN. "I asked, 'Any plans for the weekend?' And he said, 'No.' I said, 'Well, have a good day.' And he said the same to me." Scott said he left the office for the day following the conversation. It was after that conversation that police say Craddock opened fire "indiscriminately" on multiple floors of the building, stopping only when police fired back, killing him, after he allegedly shot an officer. Why Craddock, a civil engineer who had been with the coastal city's Department of Public Utilities for almost 15 years, allegedly gunned down his coworkers is still unknown. While some reports have described him as a "disgruntled" employee, Police Chief James Cervera on Saturday disputed claims that Craddock had been fired before the shooting, stressing that he was still employed at the time of the attack. Virginia Beach Carnage: Victims Were Gunman's ColleaguesCity officials have declined to release information from Craddock's personnel file, but a source quoted by The New York Times on Saturday said there were no warning signs in his behavior until recently, when he allegedly started getting into "scuffles" with other city employees. In the past week, the source said, Craddock was warned that disciplinary action would be taken against him following an altercation, according to the Times.Prior to the rampage, Craddock had no criminal history apart from several traffic violations over the years, court records show. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Old Dominion University in Virginia, and enlisted in the Virginia National Guard in 1996. As part of the guard, he was assigned to the First Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, in Norfolk, Virginia, as a cannon crew member, according to a state National Guard spokesman. He was discharged in 2002 at the rank of specialist for reasons the National Guard would not disclose.Neighbors have described Craddock as a quiet man who showed no red flags but tended to keep to himself. "He said he worked for the city," neighbor Christian Coble told The Washington Post, saying Craddock was "humble" and "average." "He seemed like an all right dude. I guess you never know what someone is going through," he said. Neighbors told local reporters Craddock was a member of the neighborhood association board and that his wife had left him some years ago.Cassetty Howerin lived directly below Craddock and told CNN he was regularly awake during all hours of the night. "You heard him walking around; he would drop stuff at like 2 a.m., and me and my roommate would try to figure out what he was doing," Howerin said.By the time Howerin would wake up and leave at 7 a.m., he was gone. "I never saw him take trash out, never saw him bring groceries in, never saw people coming in or out," she said. "He was very to himself."Craddock's former co-worker, Scott, told CNN he'd always viewed him as a "good person." "He was what I thought was a good person. When we were together, we would talk about family, friends, things that we were going to do, trips we were going to take and things like that."Craddock's relatives have yet to speak out about the shooting, but in a handwritten note taped to the door of the family's home in Yorktown, they offered their condolences to the victims. "The family of DeWayne Craddock wishes to send our heartfelt condolences to the victims. We are grieving the loss of our loved one. At this time we wish to focus on the victims and the lives loss during yesterdays (sic) tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who loss (sic) their lives, and those recovering in the hospital," the note read. As of Saturday afternoon, three of the four surviving victims were in critical condition. Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. UPDATE 3-U.S. regulators say some Boeing 737 MAX planes may have faulty parts Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:42 PM PDT The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday disclosed a new problem involving Boeing Co's grounded 737 MAX, saying that more than 300 of that troubled plane and the prior generation 737 may contain improperly manufactured parts and that the agency will require these parts to be quickly replaced. The FAA said up to 148 of the part known as a leading-edge slat track that were manufactured by a Boeing supplier are affected, covering 179 MAX and 133 NG aircraft worldwide. The 737 MAX, Chicago-based Boeing's best-selling jet, was grounded globally in March following a fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash after a similar Lion Air disaster in Indonesia in October. |
App Store in crosshairs as Apple courts developers Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:59 PM PDT Apple is set to court software savants at its annual developers conference beginning Monday while contending with criticism that the iPhone maker has made its App Store a walled garden. The App Store is the lone shop for content for Apple devices, with the technology giant deciding which software creations to accept and taking a 30 percent cut of financial transactions. "We only collect a commission from developers when a digital good or service is delivered through an app," Apple said in a page recently established in defense of the App Store. |
China Says It Doesn’t Want to Replace U.S. as ‘Boss of World’ Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:07 PM PDT China doesn't seek to surpass the U.S. as the globe's dominant power but is prepared to "fight to the end" if needed, Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said, as trade friction grows between the world's biggest economies. "China has no intention, no power, to be the boss of this world, and against the United States to fight for this status," Wei said on Sunday at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a major regional security conference. Wei added at the event in Singapore that China still wants to resolve escalating tensions through dialogue, but it won't be bullied. |
Four rescued, eight still missing on avalanche-hit Indian peak Posted: 02 Jun 2019 04:17 AM PDT Four British climbers have been rescued from an avalanche-hit Himalayan mountain range, Indian authorities said Sunday, as a frantic search continued for eight other mountaineers still missing on its treacherous heights. Helicopters airlifted the rescued group to safety after they were spotted early Sunday at a base camp near India's second highest mountain, the 7,826-metre (25,643-foot) Nanda Devi. Authorities said the four rescued were not part of the larger group but were in touch with them until May 26, a day before the avalanche struck the mountain. |
Can anybody stop Biden? Challengers make their case to California Dems Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:22 AM PDT While 14 top Democratic presidential candidates swarmed the Golden State this weekend for the California Democratic Party's convention and related events, one was conspicuously absent: former vice president and early frontrunner Joe Biden, who decided to skip the festivities in favor of an LGBTQ-rights gala 2,500 miles away in Columbus, Ohio. "Some Democrats in Washington believe the only changes we can get are tweaks and nudges," Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in her convention speech, much of which amounted to a veiled but unmistakable attack on Biden's belief in "middle ground" policies and bipartisan consensus. |
Did 'silencer' make a difference in Virginia Beach carnage? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:10 AM PDT The shooter who killed 12 people in a government office building in Virginia Beach used a firearm equipped with a suppressor that muffles the sound of gunfire. It's the nightmare scenario that gun-control advocates have warned about amid efforts in recent years to ease restrictions on the devices, which they say can help shooters escape detection and inflict more carnage. |

Second Israeli strikes hit Syria as Trump calls for bombs to stop Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:10 PM PDT Israel launched a second round of strikes against Syria in 24 hours on Sunday, state media reported, as US President Donald Trump called on Russia and Iran to "stop bombing the hell" out of the war-torn country. Syria accused Israel of targeting an airbase in Homs province, reportedly killing five people, just hours after carrying out retaliatory attacks on military and intelligence posts south of Damascus, killing 10. "Our air defences thwarted an Israeli aggression and destroyed two of the rockets that targeted the T-4 airbase," a military source told state news agency SANA said Sunday evening. |
Massive Google Outage Turned Smart Homes Into Zombies Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:56 AM PDT Your smart home is only as smart as the network that runs it.On Sunday, some Google users found themselves locked out of YouTube and Gmail as the tech giant experienced major outages across the U.S. But while the service disruption only affected most users' browsing history, others saw their homes malfunction. Nest, a Google-owned smart home company, was also affected by the outage. For Nest users, that meant losing access to smart thermostats, smart baby monitors, and smart front doors. They might seem like a plot device in a heavy-handed sci-fi movie, but smart home glitches are an inevitability as more people invite digital helpers into their homes."Can't use my Nest lock to let guests into my house," a commenter on the tech forum Hacker News wrote on Sunday. "I'm pretty sure their infrastructure is hosted in Google Cloud."The commenter, StanfordKid, had been trying to use Nest to unlock his door for guests while he was away. In theory, the software is safer than leaving the keys under a doormat. Unless Google is down—then the smart home device loses its brain.StanfordKid wasn't the only Nest user locked out of his devices on Sunday. Nest also makes smart smoke detectors, smart camera systems, and smart thermostats, some of which were reported useless during the four-hour outage. (Nest did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)For gaming YouTuber jDantastic, that meant a thermostat that wouldn't work wirelessly because the Nest app was down, he tweeted. (He acknowledged that the inconvenience was relatively minor, as the thermostat had a manual override.) Another Twitter user said he lost access to his baby monitors."It's very inconvenient when the system is down," TheBigWax tweeted at Nest. "Especially if you use Nest Cameras for baby monitors. Is the outage expected to end soon? Sometimes I wish I just got simple baby monitors instead of paying a premium price and a monthly fee for an inconsistent service."But "simple" devices of old are often on their way out, replaced by their always-online counterparts. These web-enabled products form what's known as the "Internet of Things," a network of gadgets connected to the internet, sometimes for almost no discernible purpose. Dubious usefulness aside, these smart products are making moves on their analogue counterparts, sometimes with major Silicon Valley backing.Take the Juicero. A $400 juice machine that raised more than $118 million in funding (including funding from Google Ventures), Juicero promised an unparalleled fruit juice experience by syncing to the internet to perform minor tasks like confirming that its proprietary juice packets hadn't been recalled. The juicer didn't work unless it was connected to the internet, although savvy users soon found a workaround: they could make juice by squeezing Juicero packets with their hands. The company went out of business soon after Bloomberg revealed the manual hack.Undeterred, other companies have tried selling internet-dependent beverage accessories. Ember, a temperature-controlled coffee mug ($99.95-$149.95), needs regular software updates and a smartphone connection. And unlike a $5 coffee mug, glitches sometimes render these homegoods unusable. When Europe adopted new privacy laws, some web-enabled light bulbs announced that, due to their new privacy policy, they would no longer turn on, according to the popular Twitter account "Internet of Shit."Sometimes clunky tech even becomes a human rights issue. In May, elderly residents in a Manhattan apartment building won a settlement in a lawsuit against landlords who installed smartphone-enabled smart locks in the building. Some residents, including a 93-year-old, said they almost never left home after the locks were installed, because they did not own smartphones. Others objected to an 84-page smart lock contract that surrendered all the residents' smart lock data to the landlords."It's a form of harassment," resident Beth McKenzie told the New York Post. "What happens if your phone dies? I don't want to be stuck on the street and I don't want to be surveilled."In extreme cases, the Internet of Things can cause internet outages of its own. The devices, which often have shoddy security, are prime hacking targets. On multiple occasions, hackers have wrangled huge networks of home devices and turned them into botnets capable of breaking the internet. In October 2016, a huge distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack knocked out large sections of the internet on the East Coast. Originally thought to be the work of hostile state hackers, the culprits turned out to be a group of teens. The attackers had used closed circuit television cameras, not too different from Nest's home cameras, to spam the internet to its breaking point.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. 5 of the Best Stocks to Buy for June Posted: 03 Jun 2019 10:26 AM PDT Volatility returned to the stock market in May, as trade war fears, which had been ebbing for much of 2019, began to flow once more. NASA astronaut captures breathtaking time-lapse of Earth from space Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:08 AM PDT Here on Earth, we see the Sun rise and set once in any given 24-hour period. If you want to see the sunrise or sunset you need to set your watch so you don't miss it, or you'll be left waiting another day for the opportunity. Things are a whole lot different on the International Space Station. Travelers spending time aboard the orbiting laboratory don't just have to deal with the lack of gravity and somewhat cramped quarters, they also have to wrestle with the fact that normal "days" don't really exist when you're speeding around the Earth over a dozen times per day. Astronaut Nick Hague, who is currently on board the ISS, decided to use that to his advantage and filmed a gorgeous time-lapse of Earth from the eyes of an ISS resident. The video, which is just under a minute long, is pure eye candy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75BvlfSbkEA&feature=youtu.be&linkId=68266947 "This time-lapse video taken by NASA astronaut Nick Hague squeezes a 30-minute International Space Station trip over a cloudy Earth into 60 seconds, covering the Pacific to the Atlantic," NASA explains. The International Space Station completes a full orbit of Earth in just around 90 minutes. At that rate, astronauts aboard the spacecraft get to see around 16 sunsets every 24 hours. Those aboard the space station keep to strict schedules to ensure they remain in a rhythm similar to their counterparts on Earth. NASA routinely provides live streaming views of Earth and space from the International Space Station, but it's undeniably cool to see a high-quality timelapse like this that was shot by one of NASA's own astronauts. Hague, who arrived at the space station earlier this year, will remain aboard the spacecraft for Expedition 60 which is slated to begin in July of this year. |

Angela Merkel's future in doubt as leader of coalition partner quits Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:02 AM PDT The future of Angela Merkel's government was in doubt on Sunday after the leader of her main coalition partner resigned. Andrea Nahles announced she was stepping down as leader of the centre-Left Social Democrats (SPD) after the party suffered its worst ever result in the European elections. Her decision led to renewed calls for the SPD to pull out of Mrs Merkel's coalition government, which would leave it without a majority in parliament. But the party's MPs are believed to be reluctant to force new elections in which they could suffer even more damaging losses. Ms Nahles' resignation came as a shock new opinion poll showed the German Green party in first place for the first time, after overtaking Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU). "Discussions and feedback from the party have made it clear to me that I no longer have the necessary support to continue in office," Ms Nahles said in a statement to party members on Sunday. European election results: New EU Parliament "I sincerely hope that you will be able to restore trust and mutual respect again and find a leader you can support." Her decision to step down after just a year in office comes amid panic in the party at its rapidly collapsing vote. One of the two mainstream German political parties, the SPD has seen its role on the centre-Left usurped by the Greens in recent years. Ms Nahles took over as party leader in the wake of the decision to enter a new coalition with Mrs Merkel after the SPD suffered its worst ever general election result in 2017, winning just 20 per cent of the vote. But the party's support has continued to plunge under her leadership. It came third in the European elections with only 15.8 per cent, and hit a new low of just 12 per cent in an opinion poll released at the weekend. Facing growing discontent within the party and a rumoured coup plot by her predecessor as leader, Martin Schulz, Ma Nahles issued a "back me or sack me" ultimatum to MPs by calling a vote on her leadership scheduled for Tuesday. Malu Dreyer, a regional party leader untainted by the infighting, is expected to take over as interim leader Credit: FELIPE TRUEBA/EPA-EFE/REX But it became clear that her gamble had failed as support for her failed to materialise , and she stepped down rather than face the humiliation of a vote. Malu Dreyer, a regional party leader untainted by the infighting, is expected to take over as interim SPD leader until fresh elections can be held. As leader, Ms Nahles tried to heal the wounds of a bruising party dispute that saw a Momentum-style grassroots campaign narrowly fail to block a new coalition with Mrs Merkel. Her resignation seems almost certain to reopen that debate, with many on the left of the SDP convinced that withdrawing from the government is the only way to restore the party's fortunes. Mrs Merkel has already said she will not fight another election, and there is no obvious alternative coalition partner. But most observers think the SPD will not be prepared to risk new elections while it is doing so badly in the opinion polls. "Nobody wants to be the author of his own downfall. Even the SPD does not want to destroy itself," Werner Weidenfeld, a leading German political scientist, told Bild newspaper. Most of the SPD's losses have been at the hands of the German Green party. A new poll released at the weekend showed the Greens in first place for the first time on 27 per cent, just ahead of Mrs Merkel's CDU on 26 per cent. The SPD were third on 12 per cent, ahead of the nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which continued to fall well short of its highs of last year on just 11 per cent. Meanwhile a separate poll found that only 3 per cent of Germans believe Mrs Merkel's government is doing enough on environmental issues. |

Who Made the List: 10 Guns That Can Protect Your Home (Glock Made It) Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:00 AM PDT Walther is well-known for producing high-quality, dependable guns that can go through thousands of rounds without a misfire and the PPQ M2 is their finest handgun yet.If you're looking for an effective home-defense weapon, handguns are one of the most popular choices. Why do so many people go with the handgun, especially when there are far more powerful guns available?Their compact size makes it easy to store a handgun right next to your bed in a handgun safe specifically designed for getting your gun quickly in life or death situations. That size also helps if you're in tight quarters, such as a hallway or stairwell.(This first appeared several weeks ago.)While rifles are more accurate and shotguns more powerful, handguns are more than accurate enough for close to mid-range encounters and are able to be drawn quicklywhen your life depends on it.But which handgun is the right choice? We've put together a list of the very best to help you choose.OUR SELECTION PROCESSBefore we get to our list, we wanted to explain how we chose these guns. If you're just interested in checking out the guns, you can skip to the list below. Our main factors were the overall quality, reliability, accuracy, capacity and ease of use for each gun. That means we went with the guns that we and other shooters have found to work very well every time and put shots on the target. |
