Matt Taibbi and Occupy Wall Street Complete Each Other

Posted:

Matt Taibbi and Occupy Wall Street were pretty much made for each other. The Rolling Stone polemicist's writing gives Occupy talking points for its critique of Wall Street, big business, and government, and Occupy's high-profile actions last year validated the hell out of the causes Taibbi's been championing for years. This symbiotic relationship has only deepened as the activists find a mouthpiece in Taibbi, and the writer gathers more people eager to put his ideas into practice. ...

Syria intervention calls rise, few good options

Posted:

LONDON (Reuters) - As Syria's death toll mounts, calls are growing for some form of outside intervention. But with few easy options, foreign powers who find themselves unable to halt the suffering could simply end up prolonging it. Earlier this week, Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain called for US-led airstrikes to undermine the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. Government forces have been ruthlessly suppressing largely peaceful demonstrations since last year, in the last month pounding the city of Homs in some of the worst violence yet prompted by the "Arab Spring". ...

U.S. troops gone, al Qaeda makes Iraq peace elusive

A bullet-riddled vehicle belonging to militants is seen at the site of an attack in HadithaBAGHDAD (Reuters) - If Iraqis were hoping that the withdrawal of U.S. forces last year would finally mean the end of war, al Qaeda and its Sunni militant allies are determined to prove otherwise. In a particularly poignant reminder of militants' potency this week, gunmen in unauthorized uniforms of special commandos drove from checkpoint to checkpoint in the western town of Haditha before dawn, gunning down police. ...

Will Turkey Help Syrian Rebels Besides Taking Refugees?

Posted:

"It's like moving people from death to life," says Raed Saleh, 27, describing the process of helping his fellow Syrians flee into Turkey. From his base at a refugee tent camp near Bosheen, a small Turkish village less than a mile away from the border, Saleh manages a network of lookouts and smugglers who alert him whenever a new group is en route. He doesn't speak Turkish himself, Saleh says, so he relies on another friend to phone the Turkish border guards before any refugees attempt to cross.
