Merkel to give up party leadership after poll setback Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:46 AM PDT Germany's Angela Merkel will not run for re-election as leader of her centre-right CDU, sources said Monday, in the clearest sign yet that the veteran chancellor is preparing her eventual exit after voters again punished her fragile coalition in a regional poll. Merkel, who has headed the CDU for 18 years, had until now always indicated that she believed the posts of party leader and chancellor should be held by the same person. "She will not stand again for the chairmanship of her party," a source within the Christian Democratic Union told AFP. |

Mattis looks to calm European allies nervous about INF treaty Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:28 AM PDT President Donald Trump said on Oct. 20 that Washington planned to quit the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty which Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, and Ronald Reagan had signed in 1987. Washington has cited Russia's alleged violation of the treaty as its reason for leaving it, a charge Moscow denies. Russia in turn accuses Washington of breaking the pact and says it is working to answer U.S. questions about the pact. |

The shelling targeted YPG positions on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in northern Syria, Anadolu said. |

WikiLeaks' Assange says Ecuador seeking to end his asylum Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:51 PM PDT During the hearing, Assange said the new rules were a sign Ecuador was trying to push him out, and said Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno had already decided to end his asylum but had not yet officially given the order. "If Mr. Assange wants to stay and he follows the rules ... he can stay at the embassy as long as he wants," said Attorney General Inigo Salvador, adding that Assange's stay had cost the country $6 million. Foreign Minister Jose Valencia declined to comment on Assange's assertion that Ecuador sought to hand him over to the United States. |
Jimmy Carter sends letter to Georgia Republican governor candidate asking him to resign Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:16 AM PDT Mr Carter, himself the former governor of the Peach State, asked Mr Kemp to vacate his position since the office is in charge of monitoring election results. In a letter made available to the Associated Press, Mr Carter cited his vast experience watching elections around the world through the Carter Center, an Atlanta-based human rights organisation: "One of the key requirements for a fair and trusted process is that there be a nonbiased supervision of the electoral process". The 94-year-old politician and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity wrote to Mr Kemp in what the AP called "less as a partisan who has endorsed [Ms] Abrams and more as the former president who's spent the decades since he left the Oval Office monitoring elections around the world". |

Bolsonaro Gets Brazilian Oil Windfall With Output Poised to Soar Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:09 AM PDT After a decade of stagnant production, Brazil's offshore mega-projects are about to deliver a double whammy with exports set to surge and Brent prices comfortably above $70 a barrel. This means more revenue for a country beset with fiscal deficits, and more activity in a key industry, said Decio Oddone, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency. The oil turnaround gives the government more than just cash -- it promises to revive the fortunes of Petrobras, the much-maligned state-controlled state oil company that's a source of pride for many Brazilians but which has spent the past few years mired in scandal. |

Officers said they were called to Safety Beach in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon amid reports the native animal was struggling in the water. "It began to swim but got into difficulty in the swell and breaking waves and went under water a couple of times," Victoria Police said in a statement. |

Chinese privately developed rocket fails to reach orbit Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:50 AM PDT A privately developed Chinese carrier rocket failed to reach orbit after lifting off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Saturday, in a blow to the country's nascent attempts by private companies to rival Elon Musk's SpaceX. "Before Zhuque carrier rocket was launched, its mission was already completed," the company said in the post on Saturday, without giving further details. Landspace was founded in 2015 and soon aimed to be the first Chinese private company to deliver a satellite into orbit. |

US synagogue attack 'inhuman act of violence': pope Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:30 AM PDT Pope Francis on Sunday called a deadly attack on a synagogue in the United States "an inhuman act of violence", expressing his "closeness to the Jewish community". A man suspected of bursting into the synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday during a baby-naming ceremony and gunning down 11 people has been charged with murder, in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in recent US history. "We are all, in truth, wounded by this inhuman act of violence," Francis said at the end of the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter's Square. |
Everything You Need to Know About Brazil’s Election: Balance of Power Special Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:01 AM PDT The clear front-runner in today's presidential vote is Jair Bolsonaro, the former army captain with a penchant for slurs against minorities and women and attacks on the trustworthiness of democracy itself. Bolsonaro's opponent, Fernando Haddad, a leftist former Sao Paulo mayor, has faced a difficult task of wooing an electorate fed up with years of rule by his party and the graft scandals under presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff that shifted the political landscape from left to right in just about three years. Both candidates called for calm and respect after a campaign that saw Bolsonaro stabbed at a rally and supporters of each candidate branded rivals as fascists or communists. |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:49 AM PDT One of the five victims of the helicopter crash outside the home of Leicester City Football Club was a runner-up in Thailand's Miss Universe beauty pageant. Nursara Suknamai, 33, died alongside her boss and the club's owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in the incident, which also claimed the lives of colleague Kaveporn Pupare and pilots Eric Swaffer and Izabela Roza Lechowicz. The former beauty queen's social media pages are filled with photographs of her with Leicester City players including Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy. Yoga fanatic Ms Suknamai regularly posted her workouts on Instagram as well as other shots from Venice, Milan, Nice, Paris, Royal Ascot and the FIFA World Cup in Russia in the summer. In 2005, she finished runner-up in Miss Thailand Universe and won a "Miss Photogenic" competition before going on to work in television. She starred in Thai soap operas between 2007 and 2013 before moving on to work full-time as an assistant to Mr Srivaddhanaprabha. View this post on Instagram Bonjour #bonjour #eiffeltower A post shared by Nusara Suknamai (@zara_nusara) on Sep 11, 2018 at 1:24pm PDT Her last few posts on Facebook revealed a life of glamour and high end dining at some of London's most exquisite restaurants, including the Italian Zafferano's in Belgravia and Umu, a Japanese restaurant in Mayfair. On the day before the crash, Ms Suknamai enjoyed freshly imported Greek fish at Estiatoro Milos, which describes itself as one of the finest seafood restaurants in the world. Beneath the pictures of delicious seafood, friends expressed their shock with praying hands emojis and "RIPs. "Are you really lost?" asked one. View this post on Instagram Match winner 1-2 #Lcfc #southampton A post shared by Nusara Suknamai (@zara_nusara) on Aug 25, 2018 at 10:15am PDT The former model showed a love for travel and for Leicester City Football Club on her social media pages, posing on the London's King's Road, at Avenue Montaigne in Paris, and with England football manager, Gareth Southgate, at the King Power stadium. On Instagram, she smiled in a picture with Leicester players Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan, and entertained her 16,000 followers with stunning shots from trips to Ascot, the Greek island of Santorini, her summer in Nice and in Porto Cervo, Italy. Her friends and fans took to social media with moving tributes to her life. Nursara Suknamai and England manager Gareth Southgate "I kept praying that it wasn't you but the miracle isn't real. This friend of mine has left us for good," said one friend, Khamutchart Khemchira, on her Facebook page, next to a black and white collage of pictures. "I could only pray for you last night. And then you came to say goodbye to me in my dream, talked to me in a cheery voice. I don't remember what you said to me. I asked heaven to take you back and take care of my angel friend." |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:45 PM PDT Shackled and wearing a beige jumpsuit, the man accused of sending at least 14 pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and critics of the president has been formally charged with five federal crimes in a Miami courtroom. The first court appearance of Cesar Sayoc, 56, came just hours after a 15th suspicious package was intercepted in Atlanta on its way to the CNN headquarters - what may have been the last in a series the suspect was able to mail from a list of, reportedly, hundreds of potential targets. In response to that package, CNN president Jeff Zucker said all domestic mail had been screened at off-site locations since last week, when it received two other packages addressed to the network's contributors, and bomb squads were called in to the Atlanta post office where the package was detected. |

IBM to acquire software company Red Hat for $34 billion Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:51 PM PDT It underscores IBM Chief Executive Ginni Rometty's efforts to expand the company's subscription-based software offerings, as it faces slowing software sales and waning demand for mainframe servers. IBM, which has a market capitalization of $114 billion, will pay $190 per share in cash for Red Hat, a 63 percent premium to Friday's closing share price. Founded in 1993, Red Hat specializes in Linux operating systems, the most popular type of open-source software, which was developed as an alternative to proprietary software made by Microsoft Corp. |
Catholic church split over abuse scandal gravity Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:43 AM PDT Pope Francis has vowed to end clerical sexual abuse, but bishops from Asia and Africa have shown a mixed response to a scandal some have termed a "Western problem". As the talks began, Francis warned again that abuse and cover ups would not be tolerated. Eamon Martin, the President of the Irish Episcopal Conference, said some churches were "in denial" and had not given the anti-paedophilia campaign "its proper place". |
Brazil on Course to Usher in New Era of Hard-Right Politics Posted: 28 Oct 2018 12:41 PM PDT Barring an upset, Jair Bolsonaro, 63, will win the presidency after a divisive campaign that encompassed his stabbing, an onslaught of fake news and the imprisonment on corruption charges of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who had been the front-runner. Lula's successor, Fernando Haddad, 55, has largely failed to shake off public anger over his Workers' Party's record of graft. Antonio Henrique, a 52-year-old bank employee in Rio de Janeiro, said Sunday that he's voted for the Workers' Party in every election since the 1980s, but crime, revelations of corruption and economic recession have him voting this time for Bolsonaro instead. |
Guy tries to shoo cat off his car, breaks windshield instead Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:18 PM PDT Viral Hog shared a video on Monday of a man attempting to shoo a cat off his car by kicking his windshield. Of course! Always the right way to go about something like this. Naturally, things did not go as planned. One kick wasn't quite enough to get the cat to move, so he gave the windshield another forceful kick, resulting in a sizable crack. "I was resting in the car when a cat approached the front windshield," the man — whose identity is concealed — told Viral Hog. "I wanted to scare him with my foot but apparently, I hit the glass way too hard and the glass broke." Probably best to just get out of the vehicle and shoo the cat in the future. Or better yet, just let the little fuzzball hang out if you're not in a rush to go anywhere. |

The latest reports arrived as an estimated 800 troops were sent to the US-Mexico border Monday, the US Department of Defence said Monday afternoon. Earlier this year around 2,000 National Guard troops to the region, where about 15,000 US customs officials oversee the processing of trade, migrants and pedestrian travel daily. |
