(AP) — The man authorities say made loud noises outside a Mississippi military base on consecutive days was charged Wednesday with disturbing the peace and illegally possessing weapons, but investigators are still trying to determine whether the sounds were gunshots or his pickup truck backfiring. |
Pentagon's new blood-tracking system is a bust Posted: 05 Aug 2015 03:59 PM PDT By Scot J. Paltrow NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. Defense Department system for tracking and helping speed blood supplies to combat field hospitals does not work, threatening to cause blood shortages for wounded soldiers, according to a Defense Department Inspector General report. The Theater Blood Application, introduced in 2011, is now in use at more than 249 sites, Defense Health Agency spokesman Kevin Dwyer said. |
Obama warns rejecting Iran deal would spell war Posted: 05 Aug 2015 03:24 PM PDT President Barack Obama made an aggressive case for his signature nuclear deal with Iran Wednesday, telling lawmakers that rejecting diplomacy would lead to war and destroy US credibility. Casting it as "the most consequential foreign policy debate" since the Iraq War, Obama said Congress must not waver under pressure from critics whom history had already proven wrong. "Congressional rejection of this deal leaves any US administration that is absolutely committed to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon with one option: another war in the Middle East," he said. |
Obama Warns 'Some Form of War' Inevitable if Iran Nuke Deal is Blocked Posted: 05 Aug 2015 03:10 PM PDT The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war," he said during a major foreign policy address in Washington today. Obama took a page out of John F. Kennedy's foreign policy playbook, drawing parallels between the Obama doctrine and Kennedy's Cold War stance towards the former Soviet Union in his continuing effort to sell the Iran nuclear agreement to a skeptical Congress and American public. |
Iran nuclear deal: Is war the only alternative, as Obama warns? Posted: 05 Aug 2015 02:32 PM PDT In his bluntest statement yet on the proposed Iran nuclear deal, President Obama said the only alternative is war. The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war," he said during a foreign policy address at American University in Washington Wednesday. Obama's warning has two audiences: members of Congress, expected to vote on the agreement in mid-September after lawmakers' summer recess, and the American public, which is clearly divided on an international deal whose purpose is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons in return for the lifting of billions of dollars in economic sanctions. |

"It is alleged that Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman invited support for ISIS [The Islamic State] in individual lectures which were subsequently published online," Mrs. Hemming said. |

UK radical preacher charged with inviting IS support Posted: 05 Aug 2015 12:21 PM PDT British police charged high-profile radical preacher Anjem Choudary with inviting support for the Islamic State jihadist group through lectures and social media on Wednesday. "We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman for inviting support for ISIL [Islamic State], a proscribed terrorist organisation," said Sue Hemming, Head of Special Crime and Counter Terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service. |
Britain's most high-profile Islamist cleric charged with IS support Posted: 05 Aug 2015 11:38 AM PDT Britain's most high-profile Islamist preacher, Anjem Choudary, appeared in a London court on Wednesday to plead not guilty to charges of inviting support for Islamic State (IS). Choudary, 48, was accused alongside an associate Mohammed Mizanur Rahman of using lectures which were published online for encouraging support for the banned organisation, which has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq. Choudary, dressed in white traditional Muslim attire and speaking in front of a small group of supporters in the court, called the charge a "political manoeuvre" from Prime Minister David Cameron and the police. |
US bombs IS Syria target from Turkey for first time Posted: 05 Aug 2015 11:28 AM PDT The United States on Wednesday carried out its first air strike on an Islamic State target in Syria after taking off from a Turkish air base, as Turkey vowed it was ready to step up its own fight against jihadists. "A US drone today carried out one air strike in Syria near Raqa," a Turkish official told AFP, referring to the town in northern Syria that the IS group sees as its capital. The drone had taken off from Turkey's southern Incirlik air base, which Ankara has now opened to the US military for armed attacks on IS targets in Syria just 200 kilometres (125 miles) away, the source added. |
Confronting the narcoterrorism nexus Posted: 05 Aug 2015 11:18 AM PDT Despite intense monitoring of terrorist organizations and crackdowns on Latin America's biggest drug lords, some in the military and intelligence communities see a nexus developing among violent drug cartels, transnational smuggling organizations and terrorist groups — with potentially devastating results worldwide. |

The Sorry Seven: How the GOP’s Second-Tier Debaters Can Turn Things Around Posted: 05 Aug 2015 10:49 AM PDT Being left off the main stage for the first Republican presidential debate has got to sting a little bit, but for the seven Republican also-rans, the hour-long alternative debate to be televised at 5 p.m. on Thursday could be an interesting opportunity. In the end, being included in the main debate isn't likely to save the candidacies of some whose appeal is limited – like retired neurosurgeon Ben Caron or Arkansas governor-turned-dubious-diabetes-cure pitchman Mike Huckabee. Neither is being left out going to be enough to kill the candidacies of several of those relegated to the second tier – particularly former Texas governor Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. |
U.S. drone hits Syria in first lethal strike launched from Turkey Posted: 05 Aug 2015 10:24 AM PDT By Phil Stewart and Tulay Karadeniz WASHINGTON/ANKARA (Reuters) - The United States has conducted its first drone strike into northern Syria from a base in Turkey, the Pentagon said on Wednesday, ahead of what Ankara said would soon be a "comprehensive battle" against Islamic State militants there. A spokesman in Washington said the raid by an unmanned drone was launched on Monday from the Incirlik air base near the southern city of Adana in Turkey, a U.S. ally with the second largest armed forces in NATO. Preparations were underway for strikes inside Syria by manned U.S. warplanes. |

In Syria, five strikes near Al Hasaka and two near Ar Raqqa hit tactical units, units and buildings, the statement said. |
Obama on the Iran Deal: The 'Strongest Nonproliferation Agreement Ever Negotiated' Posted: 05 Aug 2015 09:27 AM PDT "This is the strongest nonproliferation agreement ever negotiated," Obama said. Obama's speech was at American University, the same place President Kennedy called for diplomacy and nuclear disarmament at the height of the Cold War. Obama said the agreement builds on that strong tradition of Cold War-era diplomacy. |

History of the Islamic State group amid Egypt hostage threat Posted: 05 Aug 2015 09:11 AM PDT CAIRO (AP) — An affiliate of the Islamic State group threatened to kill a Croatian hostage in 48 hours unless Egypt releases "Muslim women" it holds in prison. Turkey says ready to begin anti-IS offensive with US Posted: 05 Aug 2015 08:51 AM PDT Turkey on Wednesday announced that it was ready to begin a "comprehensive" fight against Islamic State (IS) jihadists in Syria alongside the United States, after a months of staying on the sidelines of the US-led coalition. Ankara, long criticised for failing to stop the flow of jihadists to-and-fro across its border with Syria, has so far concentrated an almost two-week "anti-terror" campaign on the bombing of Kurdish militants. Ankara is waging a two-pronged bombing campaign against Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels as well as IS militants, following a wave of violence inside Turkey. |

New army chief named as Turkey fights PKK, IS Posted: 05 Aug 2015 07:57 AM PDT Ankara on Wednesday appointed a new army chief as Turkey wages a dual offensive against Kurdish militants and Islamic State (IS) jihadists. Land Forces commander Hulusi Akar, 63, takes over as chief of staff from retiring General Necdet Ozel as part of a major shake-up of the army's top brass. Akar, who has extensive NATO experience, is seen as more hawkish than Ozel, whose leadership coincided with a period of relative peace in the Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast. |
IS jihadists in Syria video threaten Germany Posted: 05 Aug 2015 07:53 AM PDT Two German-speaking jihadists claiming to belong to the Islamic State militant group threatened Germany with attacks in an execution video broadcast online Wednesday. A Spanish court had issued a warrant for his arrest, the Spanish interior ministry said earlier. |
Posted: 05 Aug 2015 07:30 AM PDT When the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was announced in Vienna on July 14, AJC issued a press release indicating that we would first study the full text and its implications, and then take a position on the deal, as the U.S. Congress launched into its 60-day review period. Over the past three weeks, AJC engaged in a very intensive, open-minded, and thorough process of external consultations and internal deliberations, involving many lay and staff leaders. |

Obama to evoke ghosts of Kennedy, Iraq War in new Iran plea Posted: 05 Aug 2015 04:56 AM PDT President Barack Obama will present the Iran nuclear debate as the most momentous US foreign policy decision since the Iraq war Wednesday, in a fresh bid for support. With the deal due to be voted on by a Republican-dominated Congress, Obama will give an address at American University in Washington hoping to give historical weight to a polarizing and sometimes bitterly hyperbolic debate. |

Blair should stand trial if he committed war crime over Iraq - Corbyn Posted: 05 Aug 2015 02:35 AM PDT Former Prime Minister Tony Blair should be tried for war crimes over the 2003 Iraq war if evidence shows he broke international law, Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn, a leading candidate to head the party Blair once led, has said. Asked if he thought Blair should face trial, Corbyn said: "If he has committed a war crime, yes. |

Turkey's troubles deal new blow to stumbling economy Posted: 04 Aug 2015 09:47 PM PDT The end to a ceasefire with Kurdish rebels and political uncertainty after inconclusive June elections are compounding already mounting problems for Turkey's stuttering economy, analysts say. The resumption of regular attacks by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels in the southeast of the country as Turkish jets bomb their positions in northern Iraq has brought back memories of the 1990s when the country was often in economic, political and security chaos. The deterioration of the security situation is already impacting Turkey's tourism sector, which has boomed in recent years to become one of the sources of the improved economic prosperity under the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. |

China appeals for U.S. help to fight Xinjiang militants Posted: 04 Aug 2015 07:57 PM PDT China has appealed for U.S. support in fighting Islamist militants in the far western Chinese region of Xinjiang, saying they are also a threat to the United States. Chinese officials say the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) recruits Uighurs, a largely Muslim ethnic minority from Xinjiang, and trains them with extremists in Syria and Iraq, with the intent of returning to China to wage holy war. Many foreign experts, however, have questioned whether ETIM exists as the coherent group China claims it is. |
