Explosion at Hawaii volcano spews ash as lava flows into sea Posted: 10 Jun 2018 01:44 PM PDT A small explosion at the summit of Hawaii's erupting Kilauea Volcano on Sunday sent ash spewing into the air, creating a driving hazard for roads on parts of the Big Island, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Lava fountains from a fissure in the volcano reached as high as 180 feet (55 meters) from Saturday night into Sunday, pushing flows of molten rock into the ocean, it said. "Seismic activity at the crater continues with gas explosions and ash eruptions under 10,000 feet (3,050 meters). |

An Economist’s Fix to the Iran Deal Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:04 PM PDT The new sanctions regime would give much less leeway for Iran to act like a rogue state. In his speech at the Heritage Foundation, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo set out clear conditions under which the United States would lift its sanctions against Iran. After the withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the thrust of U.S. strategy seems to consist of building up the pressure of re-imposed sanctions to change Iran's behavior. |

Hong Kong jails top independence leader for six years Posted: 10 Jun 2018 08:30 PM PDT Hong Kong's leading independence activist was jailed for six years Monday for his involvement in some of the city's worst protest violence for decades. Edward Leung was convicted in May of rioting over the 2016 running battles with police, when demonstrators hurled bricks torn up from pavements and set rubbish alight in the commercial district of Mong Kok. Handing down his jail term, Judge Anthea Pang said Leung actively participated in the riots and described his actions as "wanton and vicious". |

Russia's S-500 Air Defense System: An F-35, F-22 or B-1 Bomber Killer? Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:16 PM PDT Russia's fearsome new S-500 air and missile defense system has apparently entered production—and is setting new records for missile engagement range. The next generation weapon is designed to supplement Moscow's already potent S-400 and replace the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system. Not only does the weapon have unprecedented capability to hit high altitude targets—including ballistic missiles and satellites—at extremely long ranges, there have been some claims—usually from the media—that the system could target stealth aircraft. |

The treatment, atogepant, belongs to a class of migraine drugs also being developed by Eli Lilly and Alder Biopharmaceuticals that target a protein associated with pain signaling called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Amgen Inc's CGRP treatment Aimovig, which is self injected monthly and will have a list price of $6,900 a year, or $575 a month. |

Musk's comments come amid a race by automakers and tech firms to roll out fully autonomous vehicles, but also rising concerns about the safety of robotic systems. The Tesla founder made the disclosure in a Twitter conversation, responding to a user who complained about issues with Autopilot, which is currently considered semi-autonomous with the requirement that a motorist be at the wheel at all times. |

Xiaomi, one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers that is planning a primary listing in Hong Kong, said in a regulatory filing that it will also issue Chinese Depositary Receipts (CDR) on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. After watching technology heavyweights Alibaba and Baidu list on Wall Street, Chinese authorities have devised a programme under which companies listed outside the country can simultaneously list CDRs at home. |
Israel says it destroyed Hamas undersea tunnel Posted: 10 Jun 2018 06:59 AM PDT An Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip destroyed a Hamas tunnel giving frogmen unseen access to the sea from their base, the Israeli army said Sunday. Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters that the tunnel, the first of its kind discovered by Israeli intelligence, was hit on June 3 in the north of the strip as Israeli aircraft pounded over a dozen militant targets in Gaza. Last week's strikes were launched in retaliation for rockets fired at Israel by Palestinians in Gaza. |
