FBI reduces DNA backlog, scales back roadside bomb tests Posted: 25 Sep 2012 01:40 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI has sharply reduced a backlog of forensic DNA testing, in part by scaling back fruitless tests of hair samples from roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan meant to identify who placed them, according to a report released on Tuesday. The report by the Justice Department's inspector general measured how quickly the FBI lab processed DNA evidence in cases such as bombings, killings and missing persons. The FBI has faced criticism that its testing is too slow and could delay the capture of criminal suspects and the possible exoneration of innocent people. ... |

Middle East protests: Signs of hope, challenge for fledgling democracies Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:04 AM PDT The Libyan public's backlash this weekend against a militant group blamed for killing Amb. J. Christopher Stevens underscores that the violent hatred unleashed by an anti-Islam film is supported by only a tiny fraction of Islam's more than 1.5 billion adherents. But as Arabs strive to establish new governments in the wake of the 2011 uprisings, those minorities pose challenges far beyond their size – not only for their governments, but for US policy. |

Preparing to take the podium at the United Nations six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Obama hopes to counter criticism of his foreign record by Republican rival Mitt Romney, who has accused him of mishandling the Arab Spring uprisings, damaging ties with Israel and not being tough enough on Iran. ... |
Posted: 25 Sep 2012 07:28 AM PDT When Reagan won the Republican nomination, he beat out a group that included the party's future leaders. Romney was the best of a bad bunch. The problem is Republicans "do not have the courage nor the intellectual integrity to stand up to the know-nothing (dominant) wing of the Republican Party," Cohen writes. "They have designed a system where, politically speaking, the lowest common denominator wins." |

How Roosevelt's 'Big Stick' Is Misused on the Campaign Trail Posted: 25 Sep 2012 05:06 AM PDT Despite mostly keeping mum about it in public, Mitt Romney took a big swipe at President Obama on foreign policy in the full-length version of a secretly taped video released last week by Mother Jones. "Everything is about strength," Romney told donors at the closed-door fundraiser. "And communicating to people what is and is not acceptable is speaking softly but carrying a very very, very, big stick. This president, instead, speaks loudly and carries a tiny stick."
