GREEDY WARS ERODE OUR MORAL FOUNDATION Posted: 18 Nov 2014 03:00 PM PST WASHINGTON -- In addition to all the "happy" news these days -- from the invasion of Ukraine, to the horrendous beheadings by ISIS, to China's designs on world power -- one concern suspiciously underlies many of these stories: The U.S. is uniting, particularly in the Middle East, with hitherto untouchable new "allies."Of course, the intention is purely tactical when America finds itself fighting on the same side as our enemies against ISIS, or the self-declared Islamic State. ... |

Special Report: In Pentagon deal with Russians, big profit for tiny Florida firm Posted: 18 Nov 2014 12:20 PM PST Air Force pays for the engines, how much the Russians receive, and whether members of the elite in President Vladimir Putin's Russia are secretly profiting by inflating the price. Ten Ways a U.S. ‘Full Monty’ Plan Can Defeat ISIS Posted: 18 Nov 2014 11:30 AM PST There's a growing sentiment in Washington that President Obama's plan to "degrade and ultimately destroy" ISIS is not working, and that much more needs to be done to halt the jihadist menace spreading across the Middle East. Critics including soon-to-be Senate Armed Services Committee Chair John McCain (R-AZ), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney have complained that a strategy built around airstrikes and assistance to friendly Syrian rebels and other local proxies alone won't be nearly enough to halt the mass murders, beheadings and terrorist aggression that are the trademark of the Islamic State jihadists. Max Boot says his plan for defeating ISIS would cost $10 billion a year. Max Boot, a military historian and the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick national security senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, has just outlined a comprehensive plan for defeating ISIS that goes well beyond the commitments of Obama and U.S. |

"Our silence is the greatest gift" for IS, which has seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria, she told participants at a media summit in Abu Dhabi. She is married to King Abdullah II, whose Hashemite kingdom has joined the US-led air campaign against IS in Syria along with Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Queen Rania stressed the need for education reform, insisting that the followers of extremist groups are "from classrooms in which they were never challenged to think for themselves, and where they learned an outdated curriculum". |
War in Syria's Aleppo takes toll on storied Baron Hotel Posted: 18 Nov 2014 10:19 AM PST Indifferent to the sniper fire and shelling around him, the owner of the oldest hotel in Syria's Aleppo sits gloomily in the storied property he has been forced to close. Just a few metres from the front line separating government and rebel forces in the city, Armen Mazloumian smokes a cigarette on the terrace of the Baron Hotel. The hotel was founded in 1911 by Mazloumian's grandfather, whose name it bears, and was once the fanciest in Aleppo, Syria's former commercial hub. In 1958, Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser delivered a speech here. |

Deal with Iran could end isolation but would it stop an arms race? Posted: 17 Nov 2014 10:12 PM PST A deal on Iran's nuclear programme this week would be a historic step towards ending the country's international isolation, but analysts remain divided on whether it would help stabilise the Middle East or even prevent a regional arms race. Having spent years pushing for an agreement -- whereby economic sanctions on Iran are relaxed in exchange for concrete guarantees that it will not pursue nuclear weapons –- the West hopes the last-ditch talks in Vienna set an example to the world. "It would... demonstrate that the global non-proliferation system works," said Mark Fitzpatrick, a former US State Department official now at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. The hawks warn any rapprochement between the West and Shiite Iran will be viewed with deep concern by Sunni-led countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates –- America's traditional allies in the region –- who will not trust Tehran to keep its promises. |
