Some 70 separate fires, blasts and gas odours were reported during the incident, in which 18-year-old Leonel Rondon was killed by a falling chimney. Fire chief Michael Mansfield said investigators suspected "over-pressurisation of a gas main" caused the incident on Thursday. |

U.S. sanctions Russian, Chinese tech firms over funds for North Korea Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:56 AM PDT WASHINGTON/SEOUL (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a China-based tech firm, its North Korean CEO and a Russian subsidiary, accusing them of moving illicit funding to North Korea in violation of U.S. sanctions. The new sanctions target China-based Yanbian Silverstar Network Technology Co, its North Korean chief executive Jong Song Hwa, and a Russian-based sister company, Volasys Silver Star, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement. "These actions are intended to stop the flow of illicit revenue to North Korea from overseas information technology workers disguising their true identities and hiding behind front companies, aliases, and third-party nationals," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. |

Asian markets build on trade talks rally, Turkish lira holds up Posted: 14 Sep 2018 01:19 AM PDT Asian markets extended their gains Friday on hopes for China-US trade talks, while Turkey's lira held up after a shock hike in the country's interest rate and a dip in US inflation. After a tumultuous start to the month, investors finally had something to smile about Thursday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin invited Chinese officials for fresh talks to avert an all-out trade war. The news provided some much-needed support, which was improved on later in the day with data showing US consumer price inflation slid in August, easing pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten borrowing costs. |

The exercises were part of the Vostok-18, or East-18, war games that kicked off in eastern Russia on September 11 and will run until Monday. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has described the week-long operation, which involves nearly 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 planes and 80 warships, as Russia's biggest-ever war games. |
Who is Jack Brooksbank, the wine merchant fiancé of Princess Eugenie? Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:49 AM PDT He was working as a waiter in a cocktail bar when he met her. But it was no rags to riches story for Jack Brooksbank, who is set to marry Princess Eugenie in October. Educated at Stowe School in Buckingham, where boarding fees are currently almost £12,000 per term, Brooksbank, 31, is a descendant of the Brooksbank baronets and reportedly a distant cousin of Eugenie's. (Her mother, the Duchess of York, is the great-great-granddaughter of Lady Julia Coke, who is the daughter of Jack's great-great-grandfather, Thomas Coke.) Son of George Brooksbank, 68, a chartered accountant and company director, and his wife Nicola, 64, Jack has a younger brother called Thomas, 29 - a possible candidate for best man. Since 2001, the family address has been an apartment in a gated period conversion in Wandsworth, not far from Battersea Park. Princess Eugenie's royal wedding | Read more Brooksbank was introduced to Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, during a ski holiday in Verbier, Switzerland and the couple have been together for more than six years. Back then, Eugenie was studying English literature, history of art and politics at Newcastle University and Brooksbank is said to have been waiting tables and serving drinks at Devonshire Terrace, a bar and restaurant near Liverpool Street in London. Having left school in the mid-noughties, he had given university a miss, choosing instead to launch himself straight into a career in hospitality. He went on to work at Chelsea's Admiral Codrington pub, from where he was poached by businessman and nightclub owner Piers Adam and employed by the Markham Inn nearby. "At the Markham Inn, I had to deal with lots of strange people, and everyone was demanding," he once said of his experience there. "I also got to know the locals, which I loved." These included Prince Harry and his close friend Guy Pelly who, according to Tatler, "pulled him into the Mahiki set". Then, in August 2016, he set up his own company, Jack Brooksbank Limited, a wine wholesaler. He is described by those who know him as "kind and selfless" and a perfect match for Eugenie. Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe, a friend of the couple, tells the Telegraph: "Never have I known a couple with so much lust for life, who light up every room they enter with joy, laughter and unprecedented warmth. I'm sure you'll hear this a lot but Jack possesses one of the most infectious laughs you'll hear, and you will hear it!! They float with laughter and love .. although a boat helps! #engagement#eugieandjack@TheDukeOfYork@yorkiebeapic.twitter.com/Q7ezWecUsa— Sarah Ferguson (@SarahTheDuchess) January 22, 2018 I always say that the river flows well to it's destiny because of the guidance of a solid rock #engagement#eugieandjack@TheDukeOfYork@TheDukeOfYorkpic.twitter.com/hvCnnOwZpo— Sarah Ferguson (@SarahTheDuchess) January 22, 2018 "It has been a pleasure watching their relationship grow over the years, two people who enjoy each other's company so much. They are two of the kindest, [most] selfless and sensitive people I know. In that they have met their match." But Brooksbank hasn't entirely avoided scandal. In 2013, a tabloid newspaper reported that explicit photographs of him touching the naked breasts of a stripper while blindfolded and covered in candle wax during his 21st birthday celebrations had been leaked online. The pictures were quickly removed from the internet after they had been discovered. Newsletter Promotion - Royal Appointment - in article |

Salvini on Friday denied having reached a deal to take back migrants who had already applied for asylum in Italy, saying he wanted more concessions from Berlin. Seehofer had announced on Thursday that he had secured an accord with Italy over the issue in line with similar deals negotiated with Greece and Spain. |
