U.S. charges Chinese intelligence officers for jet engine data hack Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:18 PM PDT Chinese intelligence officers conspired with hackers and company insiders to break into private companies' computer systems and steal information on a turbo fan engine used in commercial jetliners, according to a U.S. indictment unsealed on Tuesday. The indictment said at the time of the hacks, a Chinese-state owned aerospace company was working to develop a comparable engine for use in aircraft manufactured in China and in other countries. The 10 people charged conspired to steal sensitive data "that could be used by Chinese entities to build the same or similar engine without incurring substantial research and development expenses," the indictment released by the U.S. Department of Justice said. |

Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:03 AM PDT A black doctor has claimed crew on a Delta Air Lines flight doubted her credentials as she attended to a fellow passenger who was unwell. Fatima Cody Stanford, a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said she was on a flight from Indianapolis to Boston when a woman sitting next to her began hyperventilating. Dr Stanford told CNN she was helping the passenger when a flight attendant intervened and asked if she was a physician, to which she replied she was. |

Part of landing gear, one 'black box' recovered from Indonesia jet Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:21 AM PDT Divers have found a piece of landing gear from a crashed Lion Air jet, Indonesian authorities said Thursday, following the discovery of a critical black box that could explain why the brand-new plane plummeted into the sea, killing 189 people. Search teams have been scouring the seabed for the fuselage of the Boeing-737 MAX 8, which plunged into the waters off Indonesia's northern coast shortly after takeoff on Monday despite only being in service a few months. Referring to the landing gear, search and rescue agency head Muhammad Syaugi said late Thursday, "we have found part of it", as authorities piece together what caused the crash. |
Megacap FAANGs Stage Rebound That Fails to Erase October's Slump Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:27 AM PDT The rally was the latest example of heavy day-to-day volatility for the FAANG stocks, a quintet that also includes Amazon.com Inc., Netflix Inc. and Google's parent Alphabet Inc. All gained at least 3 percent, while Netflix surged 6.3 percent. Facebook added 3.8 percent in the wake of its results. At its peak, Wednesday's rally had Netflix and Facebook tracking to close with their biggest one-day gain since April. |

Groundskeeper in Bayer in U.S. weed-killer case accepts reduced award Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:30 PM PDT The decision by Dewayne Johnson, who sued Monsanto in 2016, brings the total award to $78 million, down from the jury's verdict on Aug. 10 of $289 million - $39 million in compensatory and $250 million in punitive damages. Johnson's law firm said in a statement that he accepted the reduction "to hopefully achieve a final resolution within his lifetime." Judge Suzanne Bolanos of San Francisco's Superior Court of California, who oversaw the trial, earlier this month affirmed the liability portion of the verdict, but ordered punitive damages to be slashed to concur with California and federal law. Bayer denies allegations that glyphosate can cause cancer and said it will appeal the decision as the verdict was not supported by the evidence presented at trial. |
Indonesia military chief 'strongly believes' crashed jet found Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:06 PM PDT Using sonar technology, Hadi Tjahjanto said authorities were confident they had pinpointed the location of the Boeing 737-MAX plane that plunged into the sea on Monday. "We strongly believe we've determined the coordinates of the JT 610 fuselage," he told reporters in Jakarta. Authorities have been searching for the downed jet's location in water some 30-40 meters (100-130 feet) deep in the hopes of also finding flight data recorders expected to be crucial to the crash investigation. |
Yahoo News Explains: The haunted history of Halloween Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:22 PM PDT Halloween has been around for quite some time, but it hasn't always been the candy and costume-filled holiday it is today. The second night of the festival was known as All Hallows' Eve, which was later shortened to Halloween. While the name didn't stick, the idea of giving kids treats to discourage pranks did — but no one would get candy unless they asked politely. |

Worldwide Google walkout over sexual harassment, racism and pay inequality Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:09 AM PDT More than 1,000 Google employees and contractors in Asia and Europe staged brief midday walkouts on Thursday, with more expected to follow at offices worldwide, amid complaints of sexism, racism and unchecked executive power in their workplaces. In a statement late Wednesday, the organizers called on Google parent Alphabet Inc. to add an employee representative to its board of directors and to internally share pay equity data. They also asked for changes to Google's human resources practices intended to make bringing harassment claims a fairer process. Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in a statement that "employees have raised constructive ideas" and that the company was "taking in all their feedback so we can turn these ideas into action." Hundreds of workers filed out of its European headquarters in Dublin shortly after 11 a.m. local time, while organizers shared photographs on social media of hundreds more leaving Google offices in London, Zurich, Berlin, Tokyo and Singapore. Big turnout of 'Googlers' at headquarters in global protest Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:14 PM PDT The turnout in California was the final stage of a global walkout that began in Asia and spread to Google offices in Europe. "Not only will these women and men change the Tech Bro Culture in Silicon Valley, they're going to change the world!" Democratic California congresswoman Jackie Speier tweeted. The protest took shape after Google said last week that it had fired 48 employees in the past two years -- including 13 senior executives -- as a result of allegations of sexual misconduct, citing "an increasingly hard line" on inappropriate conduct. |

The vehicles will be capable of operating autonomously in certain conditions by the time the project finishes the development and testing process, they said. |

Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:26 AM PDT Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, reportedly told the White House that Jamal Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist in a phone call days after the journalist was murdered. Crown Prince Mohammed told Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, and John Bolton, the president's national security advisor, that Mr Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Washington Post. The prince's private disparagement of the murdered journalist is at odds with his public comments, where he described Mr Khashoggi's killing as "repulsive" and said it was "very painful for all Saudis". His reported comments were made while Saudi Arabia was still claiming that Mr Khashoggi had walked safely out of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, a story that has now changed several times. The remarks are likely to fuel suspicions among US senators that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered Mr Khashoggi's death but placed the blame on low-level operatives after the killing led to a diplomatic crisis. Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it. A demonstrator holds a poster of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a gathering outside the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul Credit: YASIN AKGUL/ AFP Neither the White House nor Saudi Arabia has commented on the report about the October 9 phone call between Mr Bolton, Mr Kushner and the crown prince. Mr Khashoggi's family have consistently denied that he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that was once tolerated by Saudi Arabia but is now banned. The Muslim Brotherhood is not considered a terrorist group by Western countries, although it is banned by several authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, including Egypt and the UAE. In his writings, Mr Khashoggi expressed sympathy for parts of the group's agenda and praised Qatar, the only Gulf Arab state to embrace the Brotherhood. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, also reportedly called senior White House officials to defend the crown prince and emphasise that Israel sees him as an important partner in the Middle East. Mr Netanyahu and the White House both consider Crown Prince Mohammed an ally against Iran and hope that he will lead other Arab states in endorsing a US plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly vouched for Mohammed bin Salman to US officials Credit: Ronen Zvulun/Pool via AP Israel's relationship with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states has been warming in recent years and the once-secret relations are becoming ever more public. Mr Netanyahu visited Oman last week and two Israeli ministers made trips to the UAE, drawing protests from Palestinians who argued the Arab states were "normalising" relations with Israel while it continues to occupy the West Bank and blockade Gaza. Turkish investigators are continuing to search for Mr Khashoggi's body. One line of inquiry is that his Saudi killers dissolved it in acid, although experts said it seemed unlikely they could manage that quickly and within the consulate in Istanbul. |
Fighting fire with fire: Jewish people train to stop repeat of Pittsburgh shooting Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:27 AM PDT David Ortner adjusted his yarmulke, cocked his pistol and took aim - something he wishes a civilian had done to defend Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue three days ago when Robert Bowers walked in and shot 11 people dead. Ortner was one of nine Jewish men who attended a one-day course on Tuesday at the privately owned Cherev Gidon Israeli Tactical Defense Academy near Scranton, Pennsylvania, a class that was scheduled on Sunday in response to the Pittsburgh synagogue attack. "The fact is, we're at war," said Yonatan Stern, a veteran officer of the Israel Defense Forces and director of the academy, told his class. |
