UN proposal would OK cross-border aid into Syria Posted: 29 May 2014 04:18 PM PDT UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Australia, Luxembourg, and Jordan are planning to circulate a new U.N. Security Council resolution that diplomats say would authorize the delivery of humanitarian aid into Syria through four border crossings without approval from President Bashar Assad's government. |
Republicans attack Obama over veterans scandal Posted: 29 May 2014 04:07 PM PDT By Susan Cornwell and David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans stepped up their attacks on the Obama administration over a deepening Veterans Affairs healthcare delay scandal on Thursday, but House Speaker John Boehner again declined to join a growing list of lawmakers calling for VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign. Boehner told reporters he was still not convinced that Shinseki's ouster would solve the VA's problems. Instead, he sought to keep the pressure on President Barack Obama for VA scheduling abuses that covered up monthslong delays for veterans' medical care appointments. "I'm going to continue to reserve judgment on General Shinseki," Boehner said, adding: "The real issue here is the president is the one who should be held accountable." On Wednesday, the Department of Veterans Affairs' inspector general confirmed in an interim report that Phoenix VA officials manipulated data to vastly understate appointment waiting times for veterans, and said the problem was "systemic" throughout the VA. |
Iran cyberspies created fake news website Posted: 29 May 2014 04:02 PM PDT Spies based in Iran created a bogus news organization used for espionage since 2011 against US and Israeli military targets, security researchers said. A report released this week by iSight Partners says that more than 2,000 people are or have been targeted in the operation dubbed Newscaster, which uses a "front media outlet" called NewsOnAir.org. Some of the news organizations whose work was misappropriated included the Associated Press, Reuters and the BBC. The documents from iSight called the operation "brash and complex" and added that it found at least two legitimate identities falsified from news organizations including Fox News and Reuters. |
Support falters as Shinseki fights for his job Posted: 29 May 2014 03:49 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Support for embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki eroded quickly Thursday, especially among congressional Democrats facing tough re-election campaigns, even as Shinseki continued to fight for his job amid allegations of delayed medical care and misconduct at VA facilities nationwide. |
Obama says sports concussions need more attention Posted: 29 May 2014 03:40 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Saying he wants kids to play sports but play safely, President Barack Obama called Thursday for more and better research into the effects and treatment of concussions in youth athletes. The issue is one of growing concern for parents who spend weekends driving their kids from one game to another. |
Bloomberg bashes liberal McCarthyism at Harvard commencement Posted: 29 May 2014 02:53 PM PDT By Scott Malone and Daniel Lovering BOSTON (Reuters) - Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg used his commencement address at Harvard University on Thursday to bash a U.S. academic culture that he described as increasingly intolerant of ideas from outside a narrow liberal spectrum. Citing the campus protests that caused luminaries including former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde to back out of planned speeches, Bloomberg criticized students and faculty for being hostile to ideas that clashed with their own ideologies. Standing amid the centuries-old stone buildings of Harvard Yard, he compared the atmosphere in U.S. academia to that which prevailed during Senator Joseph McCarthy's 1950s campaign to ferret out Communists in public life. "In the 1950s the right wing was attempting to repress left-wing ideas," said Bloomberg, who started his career on Wall Street before launching the news and data company that bears his name. |

Syria's Assad, an American hero? One Virginia politician thinks so Posted: 29 May 2014 02:11 PM PDT A Virginia state senator thinks so – to the point where he recently wrote a two-page letter of praise to the Syrian president for his "heroic" defense of religious minorities and for taking on America's "arch-enemy" Al Qaeda. Evidently thrilled with the adulation from unexpected quarters, Mr. Assad – more frequently referred to in the West these days as the butcher of Damascus for his regime's indiscriminate bombing and blasting of the Syrian civilian population – posted the letter on his Facebook page. |
U.N. council mulls authorizing cross-border Syria aid access Posted: 29 May 2014 12:06 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council members are considering a draft resolution to authorize cross-border aid deliveries into Syria at four points without government consent, diplomats said on Thursday, after an earlier council demand for greater access was ignored. The 15-member Security Council achieved rare unity in unanimously approving a resolution in February that demanded rapid, safe and unhindered aid access in Syria, where a three-year civil war has killed more than 150,000 people. But deputy U.N. aid chief Kyung-wha Kang told the council on Thursday that the resolution had failed to make a difference. About 9.3 million people in Syria need help and 2.5 million have fled, according to the United Nations. |
Iranian hackers use fake Facebook accounts to spy on U.S., others Posted: 29 May 2014 11:33 AM PDT By Jim Finkle BOSTON (Reuters) - In an unprecedented, three-year cyber espionage campaign, Iranian hackers created false social networking accounts and a bogus news website to spy on military and political leaders in the United States, Israel and other countries, a cyber intelligence firm said on Thursday. ISight Partners, which uncovered the operation, said the targets include a four-star U.S. Navy admiral, U.S. lawmakers and ambassadors, and personnel from Afghanistan, Britain, Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Syria. The firm declined to identify victims and said it could not say what data had been stolen by the hackers, who were seeking credentials to access government and corporate networks, as well as intelligence on weapons systems and diplomatic negotiations. "If it's been going on for so long, clearly they have had success," iSight Executive Vice President Tiffany Jones told Reuters. |

Britain's Iraq inquiry to see parts of Blair-Bush letters Posted: 29 May 2014 11:02 AM PDT Britain's government agreed on Thursday to give extracts of letters from Tony Blair to George W. Bush to an inquiry into the Iraq war, overcoming the main hurdle to publication of the long-awaited report. The probe will receive "gists and quotes" of communications from former prime minister Blair to ex-president Bush in the run-up to the conflict in 2003, inquiry chief John Chilcot said in an official letter. But Bush's replies will not be included in the report, which is examining Britain's involvement in the war, Chilcot said. |

Syrian regime rains barrel bombs on Aleppo Posted: 29 May 2014 09:57 AM PDT Syrian government forces rained barrels bombs on Aleppo Thursday, as they pressed a campaign against rebels in the northern city where dozens have been killed this week, a monitor said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said jihadist fighters executed 15 civilians in the northeastern province of Hasakeh. At least seven children were among those killed by members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant near the town of Ras al-Ain, it said. The Observatory did not give any immediate toll for Thursday's raids on Aleppo's rebel-held districts, but said regime helicopters dropped barrel bombs on some of the areas. |
Chaos over premier's post as Libya slides into uncertainty Posted: 29 May 2014 09:41 AM PDT By Patrick Markey and Ahmed Elumami TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya stumbled deeper into chaos on Thursday uncertain over who runs the country after rival prime ministers both claimed legitimacy in a confrontation threatening to turn into violence among rival factions. Even by Libya's tumultuous standards, the North African oil producing state has veered closer to its most dangerous crisis in the three years since a NATO-backed uprising helped rebels put an end to Muammar Gaddafi's one-man rule. After a contested vote in parliament three weeks ago, businessman Ahmed Maiteeq was appointed as Libya's third prime minister in two months with backing from Islamists and independents in the splintered General National Congress (GNC). On Wednesday, his predecessor acting Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni refused to hand over power after questioning the legality of Maiteeq's appointment by a parliament that many Libyans blame for their slow democratic advance. |

UK Iraq war inquiry 'unblocked' after deal on Blair/Bush letters Posted: 29 May 2014 08:44 AM PDT By Andrew Osborn LONDON (Reuters) - The long-delayed results of Britain's inquiry into the Iraq War came a step closer to publication on Thursday after a deal was reached on how to use notes and phone call records between then prime minister Tony Blair and U.S. president George W. Bush. The investigation, called the Chilcot Inquiry, was set up by former prime minister Gordon Brown to learn lessons from the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and its aftermath. The inquiry had hoped to deliver its verdict by the end of 2011 or in early 2012. On Thursday, the inquiry announced a deal had been reached between it and the British government on the disclosure of communications between Blair and Bush, previously cited as one of the big stumbling blocks to publication of its report. |

A Running List of Everyone Who Wants VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to 'Move On' Posted: 29 May 2014 07:03 AM PDT Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki took to the opinion page of USA Today on Thursday to outline everything he's doing to fix the "reprehensible" scandal plaguing his department. It's a start, but probably not enough to stop the growing list of members of Congress calling for his head. As soon as Wednesday's preliminary report from the VA's Office of Inspector General found that delayed medical care to veterans and cooked books is "systemic throughout" the nation's VA hospitals, many members of Congress who were on the fence quickly called for Shinseki to step down. Here's a list of every member of Congress calling for him to resign, or for President Obama to force him to resign. |

Posted: 29 May 2014 06:56 AM PDT But unfortunately, we're now seeing attempts in Congress to undo so much of what we've accomplished on behalf of our children. Take, for example, what's going on now with the Women, Infants and Children program, known as WIC. Right now, the House of Representatives is considering a bill to override science by mandating that white potatoes be included on the list of foods that women can purchase using WIC dollars," Obama writes. Remember a few years ago when Congress declared that the sauce on a slice of pizza should count as a vegetable in school lunches? |

China suggests U.S. may have fabricated evidence for cyberattacks Posted: 29 May 2014 06:10 AM PDT China's suggested on Thursday that the United States had fabricated evidence to underpin accusations of cyber attacks and had incited China's neighbors to "stir up trouble" in disputed waters. The United States last week accused five Chinese military officers of hacking into U.S. companies to steal trade secrets. Asked about proof behind the U.S. allegations, ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said it would be easy for the United States to fabricate evidence. "In the field of Internet technology and infrastructure, the U.S. is blessed with an advantage, so fabricating some so-called 'evidence' is certainly no hardship," spokesman Geng Yansheng told a briefing, according to a statement on the ministry's website. |

Kurdish militants kill Turkish state militia member as unrest grows Posted: 29 May 2014 04:35 AM PDT By Seyhmus Cakan DIYARBAKIR Turkey (Reuters) - Kurdish guerrillas shot dead a state-sponsored militia member in southeast Turkey, the armed forces said on Thursday, escalating tensions in the region after days of protests at the building of new military outposts. Two fighters from the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) killed "village guard" Mehmet Ugurtay in his van on Wednesday in a primary school courtyard in the southeastern province of Mardin, where he was due to pick up pupils, the army's general staff said. Village guards are armed and paid by the state, often acting in collaboration with the military, to help protect rural communities against PKK attacks. Turkey launched peace talks with jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in 2012 to try to end a 30-year conflict that has killed 40,000 people and hampered the development of the mostly Kurdish southeast. |
