Greece wildfires: Death toll hits 80 as anti-terror unit launches investigation

Greece wildfires: Death toll hits 80 as anti-terror unit launches investigationThe death toll from a fire which ripped through a Greek coastal town stood at 80 on Wednesday as frantic relatives tried to track down people missing from the inferno and coroners began the grim task of identifying bodies. Hundreds of people were trapped in the eastern resort of Mati on Monday night as flames whipped around them. Many jumped into the sea to survive but others died from suffocation, either in their cars or trapped on the edge of steep cliffs. The Greek anti-terrorist service was investigating suggestions that the blaze - one of several throughout the Attica region - was started deliberately, a security source said. Arson is often thought to be behind some fires in a crude attempt to clear forest land for building. The fire brigade said the death of a survivor in hospital had brought the toll up to 80. The service had also received dozens of calls reporting missing persons, but it was unclear if some of them were among those found dead, a spokesperson said.  Some appeared on television to plead for help, and others posted pictures online of their missing loved ones.  "I'm looking for my mum," a young woman told Greece's SKAI TV between sobs. Her mother was Athina Karakoulaki, 48, whom she last spoke to on Monday afternoon as the flames closed in. A father also appealed on Greek TV for help to find his missing 9-year-old twin daughters after he thought he recognised them in TV news footage below.  Sophia and Vasiliki's father recognised them in TV news footage of their escape from the fires on a boat, and is now appealing for help to find his daughters Yiannis Philipopoulos and his wife had spent the day fruitlessly searching local hospitals and through law enforcement agencies on Tuesday, and said seeing the footage of the boat on the TV news had given them hope that their daughters, who went missing with their grandparents, were still alive.  But later reports in Greece said that a man who was on board the boat had come forward to say the girls were his, meaning that Mr Philipopoulous' twins Sofia and Vasiliki (pictured below, left to right) remain among the ranks of the missing.  Greece wildfires: missing twins photo The fire in Mati broke out close to 5pm, (2pm UK time), an hour which is observed as a siesta time in rural Greek communities. Mati was popular with local tourists, including pensioners, and they were caught up in the tragedy alongside international tourists - including a handful of Brits and an Irish honeymooning couple - as well as local residents.  Rescue teams combed through the area and the sea on Wednesday trying to locate anything which could offer clarity on the missing, who are thought to number about 40. "We took our cars and went down to the sea and got into the sea to escape, but there were people who did not make it," said Mati resident Agni Gantona. "We got into the water and stayed there for about five hours until the boats came to pick us up. We were at the beach with about 250, 300 people. "Some were burned, some were near fainting from the smoke and the flames. Groups of us, we were holding each other by the hand and shouting each other's names, because we could not see from the smoke." With most of the corpses badly charred, identification of the dead will be challenging, experts said. "Work has started on identifying the victims of the wildfires but the majority of the bodies are totally charred," Grigoris Leon, head of the Hellenic Society of Forensic Medicine, told Reuters. An aerial view shows burnt houses and trees following a wildfire in the village of Mati Credit: REUTERS/EUROKINISSI The post-mortems and identification procedures are taking place at a morgue at Shisto, west of Athens. Leon said this will involve team work by coroners, forensic dentistry experts from the Athens University's Dental School, and the police forensic service. It was unclear what caused the fire, which spread rapidly through the community. But some suggested that the sheer force of winds, thick pine, fire and panic was a deadly combination making even the most well-executed evacuation plan futile. Greece wildfires gallery puff "Armaggeddon," wrote the daily newspaper Ethnos on its front page, a reference to the Biblical location prophesising the end of times. It carried a photo of a burned Greek flag hanging among the branches of a charred tree. Bride in hospital and groom missing as Irish newlyweds caught up in wildfires A newly-married Irish couple were also caught up in the wildfires. Zoe Holohan and Brian O'Callaghan-Westropp became separated as they tried to escape the fires in the coastal town of Mati. The pair got married at Clonabreany House in Kells, Co Meath, last Thursday before flying out to Greece for their honeymoon on Saturday. Ms Holohan, who works in advertising for the Sunday World, is in hospital after suffering burns to her head and hands, but her husband has not yet been found. Zoe Holohan on her wedding day. She is now recovering from the Greek fires in hospital Credit: PA The couple, who live in Dublin, were travelling in a vehicle when they were forced to flee. Ms Holohan was able to escape to a nearby beach and was admitted to hospital on Tuesday night. The British Embassy said a number of Brits had also been evacuated, with one in hospital with minor injuries.  'Mati no longer exists': Resort devastated by blaze Fire service spokeswoman Stavroula Maliri said firefighters were still searching for more victims and taking "dozens of calls" from people looking for relatives. Winds of above 60mph in Mati caused a "sudden progression of fire" through the village, said Maliri. "Mati no longer exists," said the mayor of nearby Rafina, Evangelos Bournous, adding that more than a thousand buildings and 300 cars had been damaged. "I saw the flames outside the window of our hotel. I thought it would explode," said Alina Marzin, a 20-year-old German tourist who had been staying at the Capo Verde hotel in Mati on Monday evening with her brother and their parents. At least six people died trying to escape the flames into the sea. Some 715 people were evacuated by boats to Rafina, the government said. One rescuer told The Telegraph that rescuing those in the sea was his "duty as a human".  Egyptian fisherman Halil Tafir, 42, said the coastguard asked if he could help the victims, many of whom were struggling for air in the waves, so he set out on his fishing boat.  "They were terrified and nervous," he said. "I pulled them up with my hands and used the rope to get them. I saw at least two dead bodies in the water. And I saw a 70 year old lady who was covered in burns. I tried to save her but at first I couldn't reach her. We finally got her into the boat. "I was so glad I could rescue them and they thanked me." The boat could only fit 20 people at a time, forcing the fishermen to make multiple trips to and from the safety of nearby Rafina. At one point the flames were so close they were licking around the boat, he said. He finally stopped rescuing people at 3am on Tuesday morning.  But Mr Tafir says he is no hero.  "I'm just human. It was my duty to help as a human," he said.  Wildfires The European Union activated its Civil Protection Mechanism after Greece sought help. Several countries said they were sending aircraft to help fight the flames. European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker tweeted the EU "will spare no effort to help Greece and the Greek people", while Pope Francis spoke of his "deep sadness," sentiments echoed by EU and NATO leaders. NATO head Jens Stoltenberg offered the alliance's full solidarity with Greece, whose government earmarked financial aid for victims' relatives. "People are shocked, lost. Some of them have lost everything: children, parents, homes," said Red Cross spokeswoman Georgia Trisbioti. Wildfire in Mati, Greece Were fires started by arsonists? Investigation begins Interior Minister Panos Skourletis said the priority was to extinguish a fire still burning in Kineta, 30 miles from Athens. Near the town of Marathon, residents fled to safety along the beach, while 600 children were evacuated from holiday camps. Officials raised the possibility the blazes could have been started deliberately by criminals out to ransack abandoned homes. "I am really concerned by the parallel outbreak of these fires," Tsipras said as supreme court prosecutors announced they had opened an investigation into the causes of the fire. Showers were set to see temperatures around Athens drop slightly after hitting 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Fires rage across Europe amid record temperatures The wildfires come as record temperatures in northern Europe have seen blazes cause widespread damage in recent days. Sweden, experiencing an unprecedented drought and the highest temperatures in a century, has counted more than 20 fires across the country. Fires have also hit Finland's northernmost Lapland province. A global heatwave map shows how the UK was another warm blob in a mostly warmer-than-normal world in June 2018 Norway, which experienced its hottest May temperatures on record, has seen several small fires. One firefighter was killed on July 15 trying to contain a blaze. Fires have raged for five days in Latvia, destroying more than 1,000 hectares in the Baltic state.

Jason Spencer, US politician pranked by Sasha Baron Cohen, to resign after yelling racial slurs in showA Republican politician has been forced to resign after footage emerged of him shouting racial slurs in a US television show. Jason Spencer, a Georgia state representative, was duped by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen into dropping his trousers and shouting the N-word in an apparent attempt to deter terrorists.  Mr Spencer initially refused to quit after the show aired on Sunday, calling it a "ridiculously ugly episode" .  He has come under mounting pressure to stand down with several major US networking showing the embarrassing footage on prime time news shows. David Ralston, the Speaker of Georgia's House of Representatives, told CNN Mr Spencer's actions and language were "reprehensible", adding: "Georgia is better than this." This image released by Showtime shows Jason Spencer in a scene from the series "Who Is America," starring Sacha Baron Cohen Credit: AP Mr Spencer has now said he will stand down at the end of the month. Baron Cohen, who is known for tricking public figures with fake interviews, styles himself as Col Erran Morad, an Israeli anti-terrorism expert, for his latest show "Who is America?"  During the skit, the comedian convinces the state representative he is taking part in an anti-terrorism training class and suggests he bare his rear end to scare off a would-be attacker. "If you want to win, you show some skin," Baron Cohen tells him, claiming it would fend off terrorists because they are afraid of homosexuality. The lawmaker can also be seen using offensive language as he pretends to be an Asian tourist while attempting to take up-skirting photos of a dummy wearing a burka.  Sacha Baron Cohen | Read more Mr Spencer has previously backed legislation banning Muslim women from wearing burkas in public, and in 2016 he sought to update a 1951 state law that outlawed Ku Klux Klan members from wearing hoods at public rallies. He quickly dropped the proposal after criticism.  He later shouts "USA" and the N-word as he acts out how he would attract attention to ward off a potential kidnapper.  Baron Cohen then says: "Are you crazy? The 'n-word' is noonie! Not this word. This word is disgusting". GOP Gov. Nathan Deal said in a tweet: "There is no excuse for this type of behavior, ever, and I am saddened and disgusted by it." Mr Spencer said in a statement Baron Cohen had taken "advantage of my paralysing fear that my family would be attacked". "My fears were so heightened at that time, I was not thinking clearly nor could I appreciate what I was agreeing to when I participated in his 'class'," he said. Sacha Baron Cohen pranked a  number of US lawmakers in his recent series Credit: AP Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate and Dick Cheney, President George W Bush's vice president, are also set to feature on the show.  Ahead of the show's airing Ms Palin announced on Facebook that she had joined "a long list of American public personalities" to fall victim to the "sick 'humour' of the British 'comedian' Sacha Baron Cohen" .

"This is a blatant violation of the 1974 separation agreements between Israel and Syria," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

Seagram heiress arrested as part of case against Nxivm 'sex cult'

Seagram heiress arrested as part of case against Nxivm 'sex cult'A multimillionaire heiress to the Seagram liquor empire has been arrested and charged with running a criminal enterprise, as part of proceedings against members of the Nxivm "sex cult". The group garnered headlines for an initiation ritual that reportedly included branding founder Keith Raniere's initials on women, attempts to recruit celebrities, and accusations by prosecutors that members were turned into sex slaves for Mr Raniere. Clare Bronfman, 39, a British-educated aspiring Olympic show jumper, was ordered by a judge in Brooklyn to be held under house arrest, on a $100 million bail. Her lawyer, Susan Necheles, entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. "Clare Bronfman did nothing wrong. Nxivm was not a criminal enterprise but instead was an organization that helped thousands of people," she said.  "The charges against Clare are the result of government overreaching and charging an individual with crimes just because the government disagrees with some beliefs taught by Nxivm and held by Clare.  "This is not how things should be done in America.  "We are confident that Clare will be exonerated." Allison Mack outside court in April Credit: AP She will appear in court again on Wednesday, before federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis.  Also appearing will be her fellow defendants Mr Raniere, arrested in Mexico in March, and Smallville actress Allison Mack, a senior figure in the group, who was detained in April. They will be in the dock along with Miss Bronfman and three more women arrested on Tuesday - co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren, and their bookkeeper, Kathy Russell. Miss Bronfman's arrest marks a dramatic turn in her 15-year association with the organisation. She was first introduced to Nxivm, which sells itself as a self-help and empowerment group, through her sister, Sara. The sisters even managed to convince their father Edgar to join, and he initially praised the group. He rapidly grew disillusioned, however – reportedly when he learnt that Miss Bronfman had lent the organisation $2 million. The Seagram Building in New York City In 2003 he told Forbes magazine that the organisation was "a cult" and he wished his daughters had never got involved. "I think it's a cult," he said, adding that he was troubled about the "emotional and financial" investment in Nxivm by his daughters, to whom he hadn't spoken in months.  Miss Bronfman rose through the ranks, and in the summer of 2010 organised a seven-day celebration of Mr Rainere's 50th birthday. The retreat, held in upstate New York, cost up to $2,120 and was billed as "the prototype and blueprint for a new era of civilized humanity." Miss Bronfman, the event coordinator, wrote that "the very purpose of VWeek is to get the chance to experience a civilized world... [and] craft for ourselves a more fulfilling, purposeful life." In November of the same year, Vanity Fair reported that as much as $150 million was taken out of the Bronfmans' trusts and bank accounts and handed over to Nxivm. The sums included $66 million allegedly used to cover Mr Raniere's failed bets in the commodities market, $30 million to buy property in Los Angeles and around Albany, $11 million for a 22-seat private plane, and millions more to support a barrage of lawsuits across the country against Nxivm's enemies. Miss Bronfman's father died in December 2013, aged 84.  Her British mother Georgiana had divorced their father in 1983, and is now married to actor Nigel Havers. Miss Bronfman, according to the charges announced on Tuesday, allegedly committed identity theft of at least two women and illegally brought another woman into the country. In 2017, Miss Bronfman defended Mr Raniere and Nxivm, calling him "a man dedicated to the betterment of the lives of others." "There have been many defamatory accusations made and I have taken them seriously," she said.  "Determining the truth is extremely important to me, and I can say firmly that neither Nxivm nor Keith have abused or coerced anyone." Indictments unsealed on Tuesday also added 10 counts of racketeering to the sex trafficking charges already pending against Mr Raniere and Miss Mack, who prosecutors say helped Mr Raniere recruit sex slaves. Miss Mack pleaded not guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit forced labour last month.  Mr Raniere's lawyers also denied the allegations, adding that the 57-year-old was being persecuted by the "morality police."

Lunar eclipse: Moon could turn burgundy or vanish entirely, say experts

Posted: 25 Jul 2018 09:54 AM PDT

Lunar eclipse: Moon could turn burgundy or vanish entirely, say experts Stargazers will be treated to a once in a lifetime lunar eclipse this week, when the Moon could turn a deep shade of burgundy, or vanish completely, as it falls into the Earth's shadow. The eclipse will be the longest of the 21st century, lasting from 8.49pm to 10.13pm in London on Friday evening, and the Moon will stay close to the horizon, giving the illusion that it is far larger than usual. The phenomenon will be all the more spectacular because raging forest fires across the globe could alter the Earth's atmosphere enough to make the satellite appear a deeper red than the usual orangey 'blood moons' which are common during a lunar eclipse. At the same time, Mars is nearing its closest point to the Earth since 2003, and so will appear large, red and bright nearby. The Moon can turn yellow, orange, red of even black during an eclipse Credit:  Eddie Mulholland Dr Francisco Deigo, of University College London's Department of Physics and Astronomy said: "If the atmosphere is contaminated, such as from wildfires then it will affect the light that gets to the Moon and we could end up with it looking deep red or even burgundy. "If there is ash in the atmosphere from a volcano, such as the recent eruption in Bali, it could even disappear completely. I watched a lunar eclipse as a child when the Moon went black. "In the future it might be possible to monitor the atmosphere and the impact of climate change by measuring this change in light during an eclipse." In a lunar eclipse, the Earth, Sun, and Moon are almost exactly in line with the Moon on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, leaving it languishing in our shadow. Without the strong reflected light from the Sun the Moon dims dramatically, lit only by the sunlight which passes through Earth's atmosphere. But because the atmosphere has the effect of scattering blue light, the lunar surface appears red. The lunar eclipse will be visible just above the horizon on Friday evening from Britain Credit: Toby Melville Mark Birkinshaw, professor of cosmology and astrophysics at the University of Bristol said: "If there's extra dust in the Earth's atmosphere, then the red colour of the Moon may be stronger than usual." Mars and the Moon will both be in front of the stars of the constellation of Capricorn just above the south-eastern horizon.   Morgan Hollis of the Royal Astronomical Society said: "Mars may be the easier of the two to pick out, as it will be significantly brighter than the lunar disc during the eclipse. "And unlike a solar eclipse, both the eclipsed Moon and Mars are completely safe to look at  with the naked eye." The eclipse will be the longest one of this century, although there will be another one only a few minutes shorter in 2029.  Stargazers will need to wait until June 9 2123 for a longer eclipse. Andrew Coates of the Department of Space and Climate Physics at UCL said: "The current heatwave will hopefully encourage people to go outside in the slightly cooler evening to view the red moon near the horizon, and with the added bonus of a much smaller, but red and unusually bright, Mars nearby at the same time "The last time Mars was this close and bright (a 'perihelic opposition') was August 28, 2003, but there was no lunar eclipse simultaneously."

Thai bride wins battle to share 'secret' relationship with US economist on Facebook

Thai bride wins battle to share 'secret' relationship with US economist on FacebookA married US economist lost a High Court battle against his Thai bride over a Facebook picture she uploaded that he feared would out his secret relationship with her. Economic analyst Harlow Higinbotham, who lives and works in the US, married his first wife in 1991 before meeting Wipaporn Teekhungam in Bangkok in 2001, and they began a relationship. He said he loved her, gave her an engagement ring and told her she was the perfect age to bear his children, the judge told the court. He visited her whenever he was travelling in south-east Asia and, in January 2004, after meeting her parents and paying a dowry, they got 'married' at a ceremony in Thailand, although Ms Teekhungam knew he already had a wife. They then had triplets in 2008, who were named after Mr Higinbotham's family and took his surname. But after the relationship broke down at the end of 2009, child support proceedings began in Thailand and the US. Five years later, Ms Teekhungam created the Facebook profile, which featured a photo of her and Mr Higinbotham with the triplets on their laps. Facebook usage in Asia Even though his other wife knew of their relationship by the time the photo appeared online, he decided to bring a privacy case against Ms Teekhungam at the High Court for misuse of private information, breach of confidence and alleged breaches of the Data Protection Act over her uploading of the photograph. The case was heard in the UK as Ms Teekhungam was now living with her new husband Winton Perry, and they now live in Norfolk. Mr Justice Nicklin endorsed an earlier decision that the claim should be struck out, saying it "has been brought, not for any legitimate reason, but as an act of harassment or revenge". Describing the claim as "worthless", he added: "In many ways, this case is extraordinary. But it is also very sad. Caught in the crossfire are three young children." The judge said that by the time of the online posting, Mr Higinbotham had already told his wife of the relationship and the triplets and the affair was widely known in her circle. Dismissing Mr Higinbotham's appeal, he said that, objectively judged, the Facebook profile was anodyne and inoffensive, if maybe mischievous. "It is said that every photograph tells a story. But the story in this photograph is one the claimant did not want told. He wanted to keep secret the fact that he had a separate family in Thailand. "He contends that the eight-year-relationship with (Ms Teekhungam) was undertaken on 'the express understanding that their relationship would at all times be kept secret from the claimant's family - in particular the claimant's wife - friends and business associates "This is perhaps where the unreality begins. Most rational people would recognise that the chances of keeping secret the existence of a second 'wife' and three children were slim to non-existent. "It is plain, however, that the claimant was confident that he could do so, perhaps relying on the fact that they were over 8,000 miles away from his first wife and life back in Illinois." He concluded that the information Mr Higinbotham sought to protect was so firmly embedded in the public domain because of the Thai and US proceedings that it was "Canute-like" to think the case could achieve anything of value. The judge also discharged an anonymity order granted to Mr Higinbotham in December 2016.
