Suicide bomber kills anti-ISIL leader in Iraq's Anbar province: source Posted: 03 Jun 2014 04:19 PM PDT One of the leaders of Iraq's pro-government Sunni tribal fighters was killed late on Tuesday by a suicide bomber in western Anbar province's capital of Ramadi, one of his men said. Mohammed Khamis Abu Risha was touring a checkpoint manned by his fighters in Ramadi when a suicide bomber hugged him, said one of his men. Four of Abu Risha's bodyguards were killed in the blast, the source added. His body was mutilated beyond recognition." Abu Risha, who was in his 30s, was the commander of hundreds of men in the desert province's capital, where security forces and a smaller number of pro-government Sunni tribal fighters have for months been battling tribesmen furious at Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki and militants hailing from the al Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). |

Iraq attacks and shelling leave 35 dead Posted: 03 Jun 2014 08:11 AM PDT Violence across Iraq, including shelling of the conflict-hit city of Fallujah, killed 35 people Tuesday, as politicians haggle over forming a new governing coalition after April elections. Iraq is going through its worst protracted spell of violence since it emerged from a brutal Sunni-Shiite conflict that killed tens of thousands in 2006 and 2007, with near-daily attacks plaguing Baghdad and much of the north and west. Shelling in the city, which lies just a short drive west of Baghdad, killed 18 people and wounded 43 others, according to Ahmed Shami, a doctor at Fallujah hospital. |

Syria and neighbors need reconstruction plan: World Bank Posted: 03 Jun 2014 06:49 AM PDT World powers and international donors must prepare a post-war reconstruction plan for Syria and its neighbors to help the region recover from the Syrian conflict, the head of the World Bank said on Tuesday. Jim Yong Kim said that although there was no sign that the ruinous war between President Bashar al-Assad and rebel fighters will end soon, international efforts - led by Arab states - should focus now on a post-war phase. "The international community, including the World Bank Group, the United Nations and key donors, must put together a plan that will help not only Syria rebuild, but also will help Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq recover from the massive spillover effects of the war," he said. |

On Sunday, Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced legislation to overhaul the VA health care system and address reports of altered medical records and long wait times that were confirmed by a preliminary inspector general's report last week. The auditors concluded that VA primary care wait times at a facility in Phoenix averaged 115 days. "The truth is that when people get into the VA, the quality of care is good. |
