Trump hires 'street fighter' in new shakeup of White House campaign Posted: 17 Aug 2016 05:04 PM PDT U.S. Republican Donald Trump overhauled his presidential campaign team on Wednesday for the second time in less than two months, hiring the head of a conservative news website to bolster his combative image and try to reverse poor opinion poll numbers. Trump named Steve Bannon, head of the Breitbart News website, as campaign chief executive officer, a new position. The latest shake-up combines Bannon, a conservative flamethrower, with Conway, a measured, data-driven analyst who might be able to broaden Trump's appeal to women and independent voters. |

Trump overhauls campaign team again as Clinton surges Posted: 17 Aug 2016 02:41 PM PDT Donald Trump on Wednesday shook up his campaign team for the second time in two months, fending off suggestions that his presidential run is in crisis as polls show Hillary Clinton cruising towards victory. The Republican White House nominee, who is tanking in swing states to his Democratic rival, hired a news executive from a virulently anti-Clinton website as his campaign chief executive and promoted a leading Republican strategist to campaign manager. Critics warned that Bannon, a former Goldman Sachs banker, was unlikely to make the populist candidate, who has upended the Republican establishment, any more palatable to moderate voters or any less controversial. |

Neymar deserves more respect - Brazil coach Posted: 17 Aug 2016 02:10 PM PDT Brazil Olympic coach Rogerio Micale described star forward Neymar as a "monster" who is too often criticised after inspiring the hosts into Saturday's gold medal match with a 6-0 thrashing of Honduras on Wednesday. Neymar scored twice, including the fastest goal in Olympic history after just 15 seconds, as Brazil delighted a near capacity 78,000 crowd at Rio's iconic Maracana to move to within one win of delivering a first ever football gold medal. "Neymar is a monster. |

Prison-made US combat helmets endangered soldiers: report Posted: 17 Aug 2016 01:56 PM PDT Defective combat helmets produced for the US military using prison labor in Texas put soldiers' lives at risk, according to a report released Wednesday by a Justice Department watchdog agency. Poorly supervised inmates also used dangerous, improvised tools, including makeshift hatchets, which could easily have become prison weapons, according to the Justice Department's Inspector General. Nearly 150,000 of the helmets were manufactured between 2006 and 2009, a period during which the White House ordered "surges" in combat troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan. |
Merkel says refugees didn't bring Islamist terrorism to Germany Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:57 PM PDT Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday refugees had not brought terrorism to Germany, adding that Islam belonged in the country as long as it was practiced in a way that respected the constitution. More than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere arrived in Germany last year. Two of those attacks were claimed by the Islamic State militant group. |
Farewell to Summer: Families, Veterans Celebrate with Wounded Warrior Project Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:25 PM PDT Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) recently helped a large group say goodbye to the carefree season in style with an end-of-summer celebration at The Getaway in St. Petersburg. More than 100 injured veterans and family members took part in the celebration, which included water activities and a make-your-own taco bar. WWP teamed up with Urban Kai to provide paddleboarding and kayaking to willing participants. |
Belgium hunts cousin of Brussels attacks brothers Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:12 PM PDT Belgian authorities are hunting a cousin of the El Bakraoui brothers who blew themselves up in the Brussels airport and metro attacks, a source close to the inquiry said Wednesday. Oussama Atar, who spent years in jail in Iraq before returning to Belgium in 2012, is wanted on suspicion of involvement in the March 22 Islamic State-claimed bombings, the source told AFP on condition of anonymity, confirming Belgian media reports. Police arrested Atar's mother, sister and one of his friends during raids in Brussels on August 11 but released them shortly afterwards, said the source who was not authorised to speak on the record. |

Behind Russia-Iran cooperation over Syria, a larger goal Posted: 17 Aug 2016 11:06 AM PDT Russian strategic bombers launched from Iran struck rebel positions in Syria on Wednesday, in a second day of attacks that multiply Russian firepower in the Middle East and underscore unprecedented military cooperation between the Islamic Republic and a foreign power. The Kremlin says the Tu-22M3 bombers attacked targets of the so-called Islamic State (IS) and other factions in Syria that oppose President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of both Moscow and Tehran. The closer cooperation serves both to target opponents of Mr. Assad – some of them backed by the United States – while also sending a sharp message to the US as fighting over the divided city of Aleppo reaches a critical point after five years of inconclusive civil war. |

Exclusive: Saudi signals it may hit new oil output record ahead of freeze talks - sources Posted: 17 Aug 2016 10:21 AM PDT By Dmitry Zhdannikov and Rania El Gamal MOSCOW/DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is sending signals that it could boost its crude oil supplies in August to a new record level, overtaking Russia, the world's top oil producer, as it gets ready for tough talks next month for a global output freeze pact. Industry sources say the kingdom, already the world's largest oil exporter, started to raise production from June, after holding it steady for the first half of the year, to meet rising seasonal domestic demand as well as higher export requirements. Higher production could give it more leverage during talks in September when both OPEC and non-OPEC producers are expected to revive a freeze deal to support oil prices, the sources say. |
US places import restrictions to protect Syrian artifacts Posted: 17 Aug 2016 10:01 AM PDT The United States announced emergency import restrictions Wednesday on Syrian artifacts in response to looting of the country's cultural heritage in the midst of a brutal civil war. The Islamic State group has ravaged ancient archeological sites under its control in Syria and Iraq, along with local looters. "These import restrictions are intended to reduce the incentive for pillage to better preserve Syria's cultural heritage and to combat profiting from the sale of these artifacts by terrorists and criminal organizations," the US State Department said. |
Germany resumes weapons deliveries to Kurds in north Iraq Posted: 17 Aug 2016 08:55 AM PDT The German military on Wednesday said it had resumed deliveries of weapons to Kurdistan after the government of the northern Iraqi region vowed to ensure the arms did not end up on the black market. A defense ministry spokesman said Germany had delivered 70 tonnes of weapons, including 1,500 rifles, 100 shoulder-fired rockets and three armored vehicles, to the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil on Tuesday. Germany halted weapons deliveries in January after media reports that some weapons sent to Kurdistan to help it fight Islamic State militants had later been offered for sale on the black market. |
Political Psychology: The Presidents' Mental Health Posted: 17 Aug 2016 07:58 AM PDT In early August, California Rep. Karen Bass, a Democrat, launched the hashtag #DiagnoseTrump and started a change.org petition claiming the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, meets the diagnostic criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The candidates' verbal volley highlights a persistent stigma about mental illness in politics. In the past, an admission of mental health problems was a death knell to political careers. |

Who is an extremist? UK faces legal challenge over strategy to stop radicals Posted: 17 Aug 2016 03:47 AM PDT By Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) - To his detractors, including the British government, Salman Butt is an extremist whose views on Islam fly in the face of Britain's values and help foster an atmosphere where young Muslims can be radicalised by militants. The problem facing Britain and other Western governments is the same one with which they have wrestled since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States: how to stop their young citizens being radicalised without been seen to censor critics. |

For IS, losing Sirte won't mean losing Libya: analysts Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:45 AM PDT Libyan pro-government forces have cornered Islamic State group fighters in a few pockets of Sirte, but defeat there will be far from the end of IS in Libya, analysts say. While ousting the jihadists from the coastal city that was once their North African stronghold would be a symbolic boost for Libya's fragile unity government, it could also set the stage for further conflict. "Daesh has lost Sirte, but it has not lost Libya," said Abdelbari Atwan, a journalist and expert on jihadist groups, using an Arabic acronym for IS. |
