Analysis: Cautious toward Middle East, Obama gets second chance in Egypt Posted: 04 Jul 2013 03:44 PM PDT By Steve Holland and Tabassum Zakaria WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When President Barack Obama sat down with his top national security aides this week to determine how to react to a military takeover in Egypt, he had a tough choice to make. He could denounce what had taken place as a coup launched against a legitimately elected president in Cairo and suspend U.S. military aid. Or he could embrace the move as a reaction to popular discontent with the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled government. That he chose a middle ground, urging a swift return to civilian government and ordering a U.S. ... |
Veterans' benefit? VA, buried under claims, says it's finally digging out Posted: 04 Jul 2013 01:42 PM PDT Stories of US veterans streaming back from America's wars and endeavoring to gamely navigate the Veterans Administration claims process have created a grim legend of wounded warriors waiting four years before the VA, buried under a mountain of paperwork, can even begin the process of looking into their benefits claims. |

PKK militants attack Turkish military despite ceasefire Posted: 04 Jul 2013 09:47 AM PDT DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Kurdish militants attacked two military outposts in southeastern Turkey, Turkish officials said on Thursday, breaking a three-month ceasefire, but they denied militant reports one soldier had been killed. The militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) attacked gendarmerie outposts in two separate districts of Diyarbakir province on Wednesday, drawing return fire from security forces, the provincial governor's office said. It said no one had been killed or wounded in the attacks in Diyarbakir's Dicle and Hani districts. ... |
Fall of Egypt's Mursi splits region Posted: 04 Jul 2013 09:44 AM PDT By Tarek Amara TUNIS (Reuters) - The toppling of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi divided the Middle East on Thursday, with Tunisia's ruling Islamists denouncing it as a coup while Gulf Arab leaders celebrated. The United States expressed concern at the overthrow of the elected Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood and called for a swift return to democracy, as did the European Union. But they stopped short of calling it a coup, which might have led to sanctions. The 54-nation African Union was likely to suspend Egypt for allowing "unconstitutional change", a senior AU source told Reuters. ... |
Oil dips to around $105 as supply concerns ease Posted: 04 Jul 2013 05:53 AM PDT By Alex Lawler LONDON (Reuters) - Oil slipped on Thursday to around $105 a barrel after Egypt's armed forces toppled its president, easing concerns over the threat of supply disruption in the Middle East. The Suez Canal, a vital waterway for oil shipments, was not affected by the unrest, but analysts said real and threatened supply disruptions in regions including the Middle East, which pumps a third of the world's oil, would support prices. ... |

His next book, "In the Wolf's Mouth," is due to be published next year. His earlier novel, "The Quickening Maze," was nominated for the Man Booker Prize in 2009, and his narrative poem, "The Broken Word," won the Costa Book Award for Poetry and Somerset Maugham Award. Foulds, 38, spoke to Reuters during a visit to New York to receive the E.M. ... |
For July 4th: Remembering Why the Right Doesn't Own the Stars and Stripes Posted: 04 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT Like many men who volunteered for the U.S. Army in World War II, my late father never boasted about his years in uniform. A patriot to his core, he nevertheless despised what he called the "jelly-bellied flag flappers." But in the decade or so before he passed away, he began to sport a small, eagle-shaped pin on his lapel, known as a "ruptured duck." Displaying the mark of his military service said that this lifelong liberal loved his country as much as any conservative — and had proved it. |
8 Tell-Tale signs that a movie could be a flop Posted: 03 Jul 2013 05:19 PM PDT By Brent Lang and Sara Morrison LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "White House Down" landed in theaters this past weekend with a thud. Blowing up much of the Beltway cost $150 million, but the film only eked out a $25.7 million opening despite boasting the triple threat of Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich. And this week sees the debut of "The Lone Ranger," which rides into theaters on a flurry of bad reviews and damaging reports about a bursting budget and production snafus. ... |
