'We don't scare,' U.S. defense secretary Mattis says after London attack Posted: 05 Jun 2017 12:01 AM PDT U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday the United States and its allies would continue to fight against Islamist extremists and would not be scared by attacks against the West by the Islamic State group. British Prime Minister Theresa May has said Britain must be tougher in stamping out Islamist extremism after attackers killed at least seven people by ramming a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbing revelers in nearby bars. |

Saudi, UAE seize chance to isolate Qatar Posted: 05 Jun 2017 07:27 AM PDT Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, emboldened by US President Donald Trump's new approach to the region, have seized the chance to isolate Qatar, analysts said Monday. Gas-rich Doha, which has long exercised an independent streak in its foreign policy, last month denied comments which appeared on its official news agency questioning US hostility towards Iran. Qatar blamed hackers for a string of explosive remarks attributed to its Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani after Trump visited Saudi Arabia, its giant neighbour. |

Mexico ruling party claims win in key state, rivals cry foul Posted: 04 Jun 2017 10:35 PM PDT Mexico's ruling party narrowly held onto the governorship of the country's largest state Sunday, according to preliminary election results, but a fiery leftist hoping to ride the race to the presidency cried foul. The election in the state of Mexico, President Enrique Pena Nieto's home state, was closely watched as a bellwether ahead of presidential polls next year. It was a must-win race for Pena Nieto and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which had to fend off a fierce challenge from an upstart leftist party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), and its founder, presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. |
China upset at Mattis' "irresponsible remarks" on South China Sea Posted: 04 Jun 2017 05:24 PM PDT China has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with what it labeled "irresponsible remarks" on the South China Sea by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis during a security forum at the weekend. Mattis accused China of having contempt for other nations' interests and disregarding international law. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China's construction of facilities in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea was aimed at improving working conditions for people stationed there, maintaining sovereignty and fulfilling China's international responsibilities. |

Father Banned from Seeing Son Due to Mother Being Married to Another Man? Posted: 04 Jun 2017 05:00 PM PDT Attorney Rebekah Brown-Wiseman says, "The courts, unfortunately, see it very differently than the average person. "So, if the mother and her husband object to the biological father basically being a parent to his own biological child, they're going to allow it," she explains, telling The Doctors that in the state of Florida these cases are difficult to resolve due to this archaic law. |
Posted: 05 Jun 2017 09:44 AM PDT The Associated Press says that Donald Trump isn't a reliable source for accurate information when violent acts are unfolding abroad after the President's Twitter firestorm over the weekend in response to the terrorist attacks in London. "The latest deadly London attacks, like one in the Philippines last week, prompted visceral reactions from Trump instead of statements shaped by the findings of the U.S. intelligence and diplomatic apparatus," the news service wrote in a fact-check of Mr Trump's tweets. The Associated Press (AP) fact-check is the latest example of the news media contradicting Mr Trump's public claims, and is likely to add to the rift between the Fourth Estate and the White House. |

Kabul to host peace summit after week of deadly violence Posted: 05 Jun 2017 12:46 PM PDT Kabul will host a multinational peace conference on Afghanistan Tuesday, as the capital reels from a wave of bombings and clashes last week that left more than 100 people dead and hundreds wounded. Much of Kabul remains on lockdown ahead of the conference, labelled the "Kabul Process", with tighter than usual security including more armed checkpoints and armoured vehicles patrolling the streets. "The Kabul Process is meant to reach a consensus with the region and the world for peace in Afghanistan," said presidential spokesman Shah Hussain Murtazawi. |
Cambodian opposition makes gains in local elections Posted: 04 Jun 2017 08:45 AM PDT By Prak Chan Thul PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia's opposition made significant gains in local elections against the ruling party of authoritarian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Sunday, according to the first results. The election for more than 1,600 communes would not mean a major shift in power, but could be a springboard for next year's general election, in which Hun Sen aims to extend more than three decades in power in the Southeast Asian country. The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) won 11 out of the first 80 communes for which results were declared. |
Major change in iOS 11 teased ahead of WWDC 2017 keynote Posted: 05 Jun 2017 07:04 AM PDT It's not only the brand new iOS Files app that was accidentally leaked ahead of the opening WWDC 2017 keynote scheduled for Monday morning. Apple has also accidentally teased a major change for iOS, even though it's one that we totally saw coming.
According to Touch Arcade, 32-bit apps were not available from the App Store for "a good 12-24 hours" over the weekend. That apps did not disappear per se, although that's probably something that will happen in the future. They were simply undiscoverable via search. But as long as you had a direct link to an application, you could still find the app. This isn't the first time Apple has hinted that 32-bit apps are going to bite the dust in the near future. The company urged developers to update their apps to 64-bit, and there's even a pop-up notification in iOS 10.3 that tells both the user and the developer that the application won't work in future versions of iOS. Ditching 32-bit app support and forcing developers to update their apps to 64-bit should, in the grand scheme of things, help Apple improve performance across devices in the future. It's also believed that future A-series chips won't not even support 32-bit apps any longer. We'll still have to wait until fall when Apple will unveil the iPhone 8's A11 CPU to see whether this rumor pans out. Apple will unveil iOS 11 on Monday, at which point we'll find out more details about app requirements as well. |

Live images on NASA television showed the spaceship approaching the orbiting outpost, then being grabbed with the station's robotic arm at 9:52 am (1352 GMT). "Capture complete," said NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who operated the robotic arm from inside the station. |
Apple unveils watchOS 4 and the future of Apple Watch Posted: 05 Jun 2017 10:19 AM PDT We're past 10:00 AM in San Jose, California, which means that WWDC 2017 has officially begun. Apple's keynote on Monday should be jam-packed with announcements, as some attendees say they were told the event could last upwards of two hours. But for now, we'll focus on the company's first big reveal of the day: watchOS 4 and all of the new features coming to the Apple Watch.
In watchOS 4, watch faces will have complications of their own, allowing them to change dynamically depending on the day or the time of day. Apple is also introducing a new Siri watch face that will display a timeline of relevant information decided upon by machine learning. So for all intents and purposes, it's basically the Apple Watch's own version of Google Now. If you're more interested in neat visuals than a stream of information, you can use the kaleidoscope watch face instead. Apple has also teamed up with Disney once again to bring watch faces of Woody, Jesse and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise to the Apple Watch. Back to more functional additions, Apple has refreshed the UI for the Workout app with new challenges, new animations and a new mode for High Intensity Interval Training. watchOS 4 can also interact with gym equipment via NFC, so that your Apple Watch can see what you're doing on a wide variety of connected machines from brands like Cybex, Life Fitness and StairMaster. Additionally, watchOS 4 offers a long-awaited update to the Music app, adds a new dock to scroll through recently used apps and brings Apple News to the Apple Watch for the first time. A developer preview of watchOS 4 will be available today, with the full release coming this fall. Be sure to visit our WWDC 2017 hub for all the latest news from Apple's big event. |
